Perspectives in Philadelphia: Two PresentationsInside and outside: what goes into (and what goes on inside) a laboratory, and how a lab is designed and built; the “guts” and the “skin.”Those were the focuses of two standing-room-only presentations on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons of the springAnnual Meeting in Philadelphia: the first (inside) by one of our industry’s leading authorities; the second (outside) by a firm whosesophisticated signature architecture is revolutionizing the look of government and university laboratory design.4JERRYKOENIGSBERG:“YESTERDAY,TODAY &TOMORROW”He called it“a personal retrospectiveof theLaboratoryCasework Jerry KoenigsbergIndustry and the markets that it serves,”and there is no one better qualified tomake evaluations and predictions aboutour industry than Jerry Koenigsberg.Recently retired from GPR PlannersCollaborative, where he was a principal,Jerry Koenigsberg has been one of ourindustry’s leading authorities and championsfor four decades. That’s why his presentationat the spring Annual Meetingin Philadelphia – a retrospective on, andpredictions about the industry – had ahuge-turnout audience on the edge oftheir seats.Jerry fascinated his listeners with ahistorical tour of the industry since themid-Sixties, explaining how materialsand engineering advances – as well associetal factors like campus unrest in the‘60s, the EPA, OSHA, and the oil embargoof the ‘70s, the ADA act in the ‘80s,and the Gulf War and the growth ofinternational lab work in the ‘90s – allhelped create today’s marketplace of morehigh-end casework, increasing costs, growing foreign competition, tighteningcode requirements, the rise of the LCVhood market, and a post-9/11 securityand safety awareness. All this led to the “Tomorrow” sectionof his presentation, in which Jerrymade dozens of bold predictions (muchnote-taking in the audience) about designtrends, materials trends, standards trends, technology drivers, and “hot buttons,” aswell as making specific recommendationsto SEFA (expand internationally, promoteSEFA standards, underwrite technicalresearch programs, and more andmore). He ended with a wake-up callthat, among other things, called on theindustry to promote rather than commodifycasework and fume hoods; invest morein R&D; encourage innovation; develop“value added” marketing; and pay moreattention to style and esthetics.VENTURI SCOTT BROWN:LABS BY DESIGN“Style and esthetics,” as well as severalof Jerry Koenigsberg’s design trend predictions– including the growing importanceof open laboratory design and of signaturearchitecture – were brilliantly illustratedthe next day in a presentation by DanielMcCoubrey, AIA, and James Kolker, AIA,By-LawsChangeSEFA members, at the AnnualMeeting, amended the organization’sby-laws to allow one associate memberto vote at board meetings.of Venturi,Scott BrownAnd Associates, the Philadelphiaarchitecturalfirm that haswon more than130 majordesign awards.Their laboratory James Kolker, AIAprojects, primarily at major university campuses, include UCLA and UC SantaBarbara, Penn, Dartmouth, Princeton, YaleSchool of Medicine, Kentucky, OhioState, and the University of Michigan. Many of them illustrate the firm’s ability toincorporate modern research facilities intoexisting campus settings, “modern translationsof historical contexts,” as SteveHackman of Health Education ResearchAssociates said in his introduction to thepresentation. The projects McCoubrey and Kolkershowed, illustrated with detailed floorplans as well as photography, emphasizedVenturi’s commitment to creating environmentsconducive to good research thatare also good places in which to work.Labs that are not just functional, but livingenvironments where researchers, studentsand teachers spend large parts oftheir lives. Beautiful work.SEFA Scope is published by the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association (SEFA), whosemembers include manufacturers of laboratory casework, fumehoods, related equipment, and alldesign disciplines.SEFA World Headquarters1205 Franklin Avenue – Suite 320Garden City, New York 11530Phone: 516.294.5424 • Fax: 516.294.2758 • Email: sefalabs@aol.comExecutive Director: David J.
