Greetings from the 2012-2013 MAA SouthernCalifornia-Nevada Section ChairMin-Lin Lo, California State University – San BernardinoMAA Southern California-Nevada Section ChairAfter almost six months of waiting since our Fall Meeting, our Spring Meeting is finallyhere to recharge us!Our Section Chair, Min-Lin Lo,is a math prof and advisor tothe Math Club at Cal StateSan Bernardino. We had a wonderful meeting on a gorgeous day atCal State Long Beach last fall. Our attendeesenjoyed the excellent talks given by Guershon Harelfrom UCSD (if you were there, you know why thereis a giraffe on this page), SarahEichhorn from UCI (we got tosimulate a computer usingmatch boxes), Daphne Liufrom CSULA (we learnedabout rainbow coloring), andMatt DeLong, who is a visitingprofessor at Harvey MuddCollege this year (we heard thestory of Farmer Ted’s ChickenCoop), with topics on matheducation, game theory, graphtheory, and undergraduate research problems, respectively. There were also interesting talks givenby students and faculty from our section in thecontributed paper sessions. Graduate students wereable to get help from our section’s faculty on their CVsand job application materials. There were also couponswith huge MAA student membership discountsavailable that day. If you were not able to attend our meeting last fall, I know readingabout it here is probably making you regret that you missed all that fun. No worries, you’ll have another chance this spring Saturday, April 20, at the University of San Diego! Our program committee has invited some great speakers for the Spring Section Meeting.• Ravi Vakil, Stanford University (MAA Polya Lecturer), will speak on “TheMathematics of Doodling.”• Kathryn Leonard, CSUCI (recipient of the 2011 MAA Alder Teaching Award),will present “Image Modeling with Industry and Undergraduates.”• Chris Rasmussen, San Diego State (Department of Mathematics and Center forResearch in Mathematics and Science Education) will discuss “Who Chooses Not toPersist in Calculus and Why?”• Francis Su, Harvey Mudd College (recipient of our 2012 Section Teaching Awardand of the 2013 MAA Haimo Teaching Award) will present “Combinatorial FixedPoint Theorems.”Continued, next page …2

Even while more students aretaking more advanced mathematics in high school than ever before—including over half a million each year who study calculus while inhigh school—the percentage of all college students in 4-yearundergraduate programs who are enrolled in mathematics at the levelof calculus or above has decreased steadily over the past decades. Moreover, a substantial percentage of students who enroll in CalculusI intending to take more Calculus end up deciding not to continue inCalculus. This represents a huge loss to the nation in terms of the needfor more students to pursue a major in one of the STEM disciplines. Inthis presentation I examine the characteristics of STEM-intendingstudents who begin their post-secondary studies with Calculus I andeither persist or switch out of the Calculus sequence, and hence eitherremain in or leave the STEM pipeline. The data used for this analysiscomes from a unique, in-depth national survey aimed at identifyingcharacteristics of successful programs in college Calculus.10:00 – 10:15 Section Business Meeting – Warren AuditoriumPresentation of Section Distinguished Teaching AwardSpring Meeting Schedule continued on page 5 …4

Shape modeling arisesfrom object recognition problems in the field of computer vision. Weexplore a particular category of shape models, skeletal models, thatrepresent an object as a collection of connected branches of curves andassociated scalar function or functions. We also present a collection ofapplications where skeletal models have proved useful.12:30 – 1:30 Lunch – Pick up box lunches at entrance to Warren Auditorium.1:30 – 2:30 Invited Address by Ravi Vakil, Stanford UniversityWarren Auditorium, Mother Rosalie Hill HallThe Mathematics of DoodlingDoodling has many mathematical aspects: patterns, shapes, numbers, and more. Not surprisingly, there is often some sophisticated and funmathematics buried inside common doodles. I'll begin bydoodling, and see where it takes us. It looks like play, but it reflectswhat mathematics is really about: finding patterns in nature, explaining them, and extending them. By the end, we'll have seensome important notions in geometry, topology, physics, andelsewhere; some fundamental ideas guiding the development ofmathematics over the course of the last century; and ongoing workcontinuing today.2:30 – 3:00 Refreshments – Entrance to Warren Auditorium2:30 – 3:00 Grad Student Resume Retrieval – Entrance to Warren AuditoriumPick up your faculty-reviewed job application materials!Spring Meeting Schedule continued on page 6 …5

Spring Meeting Schedule, continued from page 53:00 – 4:00 Invited Address by Francis Su, Harvey Mudd CollegeWarren Auditorium, Mother Rosalie Hill HallCombinatorial Fixed Point TheoremsThe Brouwer fixed point theorem and the Borsuk-Ulam theorem arebeautiful and well-known theorems of topology. It is perhaps lesswell-known that the Borsuk-Ulam theorem implies the Brouwer fixedpoint theorem. These theorems both admit combinatorial analogues. In particular, Sperner’s lemma is equivalent to the Brouwer fixed pointtheorem, and Tucker’s lemma is equivalent to the Borsuk-Ulamtheorem. With these theorems, I will trace recent connections, applications, and generalizations – some of which include researchwith undergraduates.Pre-register for the Spring Meeting at the MAA Southern California-NevadaSection website http://sections.maa.org/socalnv/ or using the mail-in form on page 10.Where to Park, Register, and Sleep at University of San DiegoThe University of San Diego is located in Old Town, San Diego, California. Many presented their work in theStudent Poster Session there, others gave presentations in some of the many sessions ofinvited and contributed talks, while others took advantage of the meeting’s proximity toattend graduate school fairs, panels, networking sessions, and many talks – and mostenjoyed their time in a somewhat chilly San Diego. Fourteen regional students wererecognized for having excellent posters (see the list on the next page). All who presentedare worthy of congratulations: the facts that• your advisor(s) approved your entry and• it was accepted to be presentedare in themselves accomplishments.Students’ Column, continued on page 13…12

Message from the Governor: JMM and Other National MAA NewsMagnhild Lien, 2010-2013 Section GovernorCalifornia State University – NorthridgeThis will be my final report as Governor of the SouthernCalifornia-Nevada Section of the MAA. My term ends in June2013 and the Board of Governors (BOG) meeting held inconjunction with the Joint Mathematics Meeting in San Diegoin January 2013 was my last. A new governor will be in placefor MathFest 2013 in Hartford, Connecticut. It has been a greatpleasure to serve as governor these past three years and I onceagain thank the members of the section for giving me thisopportunity. I have interacted with fellow governors from theother sections, learnt more about the association and how itfunctions and gotten to know many of the MAA officers andstaff. The record attendance of nearly 7200 people at the JMM in Boston last year was difficultto beat even for a meeting held in sunny (although quite breezy and chilly) San Diego. Amere 6600 attendees congregated in the San Diego Convention Center for four days filledwith exciting invited talks, special sessions, contributed paper sessions, panels, postersessions and other activities including networking with colleagues and friends. Actually6600 is a pretty good number and much higher than at previous meetings, with theexception of Boston. The increase in the attendance numbers at the JMM over the lastfew years is mostly due to a drastic increase in number of student attendees, both at theundergraduate and graduate level.Oh well – I digress. Let’s get back to the report from the BOG meeting. As always, theBOG met the day before the official start of the JMM. In addition to the standard reportsfrom various constituencies, including the MAA officers, and staff from the WashingtonOffice, here are some of the highlights from the January 2013 BOG meeting. One of the pleasures of being on the BOG is that we get to vote on the recommendationsfrom the prizes and awards committees. Once again a member of the SouthernCalifornia-Nevada Section was a recipient of the Henry L. Alder Award forDistinguished Teaching by a Beginning College or University Mathematics FacultyMember. Congratulations to Rachel Levy, Harvey Mudd College, for receiving thisaward. She will be invited to give a talk at the special session for the three Alder Awardrecipients at MathFest 2013 in Hartford, Connecticut. The board approved Gerard Venema as associate secretary for a new five year term,February 1, 2013 – January 31, 2019.Governor’s Report, continued on page 15…14

Governor’s Report, continued from page 14…I would like to draw your attention to a couple of issues raised during the meeting. MAAis always looking for volunteers to serve on the many committees that are part of thegovernance structure of the association and have set up a Committee Suggestions link onthe MAA webpage. If you want to get involved or you have a colleague you think woulddo a wonderful job serving on one of the MAA committees, please enter your suggestionsat https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/committeesuggestions2013. The link will stay livethrough April 1. Jerry Porter, the chair of Council on Prizes and Awards, mentioned thatless than 10% of the authors of articles in the MAA journals are women. He asked whatwe can do to attract more women to submit articles for publication in these journals?Maybe knowing this fact alone is enough to get some of you to consider submittingarticles to one of the MAA journals and, if not you, consider encouraging others to do so.David Hyde, a student at theUniversity of California, SantaBarbara, presented a poster atthe JMM in San Diego inJanuary of this year. Hyde’sproject advisor was formerMAA Southern California-Nevada Section Governor KenMillett of UCSB. (Photo byMagnhild Lien)A new MAA membership structure will take effect in 2014. The current dues structure, which has 9 different membership types with several due categories within each type, hasbeen simplified to five groups: Member ($169/$100*), Member Plus ($269), K-12Teacher ($55), Student ($35) and Departmental ($370, same as in 2013). * $100 is forcertified long-term members (70 years old + 25 years of membership). Membershipbenefits for all of the categories will be listed on the MAA webpage later this year. Thebasic member benefits will include electronic versions of the three MAA journals, andMath Horizons, and member discount on print editions of the same.MAA Executive Director Michael Pearson announced a new initiative, “MAA Book Salein a Box”. The virtual book sale will replace the traditional Section book sale. Memberswill be emailed a 35% off coupon before the section meeting, which can be used at themeeting or applied to purchases at the MAA storehttp://maa-store.hostedbywebstore.com/ The discount is valid for two weeks.Governor’s Report, continued on page 16…15

Governor’s Report, continued from page 15…Krista Leal from California State University, San Bernardino, presented a poster during theStudent Poster Session at the JMM in San Diego in January of this year. Leal’s project advisorwas current MAA Southern California-Nevada Section Chair Min-Lin Lo.(Photo by Magnhild Lien)As always, the JMM program was rich and full of interesting talks, panels and funactivities, and the Southern California-Nevada Section was well represented. The onlyproblem with such an extensive program is that it isimpossible to get to see and hear everyone.I attended the Joint Prize Session where Francis Su (left)of Harvey Mudd College was presented with the MAAHaimo Teaching Award; Perci Diaconis and RonGraham, UC San Diego, were presented with the MAAEuler Book Prize for their book Magical Mathematics:The Mathematical Ideas that Animate Great MagicTricks; and John Baez, UC Riverside, with co-authorJohn Huerta, was presented with the AMS Levi L.
