BangkokDriven by fearless drivers who know every nook and cranny of Bangkok, the tuk-tuks are sometimes the only way toget where you want to go. While they can be a noisy, smelly and hot way to travel, they are also fun! While the Grand Palace’s stunninggolden towers, statues and sculpturesare a deliberately extravagantcelebration of Buddhism, don’tmiss all the small temples thatalso can surprise the visitorwith memorable examplesof religious art.first massage school in the kingdom (still agood place for an authentic Thai rub-down).The Grand Palace, situated in the heart of theRattakosin district, is almost a city within thecity, its golden arches, decorated walls andmagnificent sculptures inhabiting palacesdedicated to Buddhism, the national religion.Serene sanctuariesBut in Bangkok you can also find havens ofserenity. In the smaller klongs picturesquescenes suddenly appear: the old, silk-beardedbarber shaving his customers on the porchoutside his wooden house; the mandarin ladyplying her delicacies on a fragile bambootable at the entrance to a narrow bridge; thekid helping his blind grandma sell songbirdsto passing pedestrians near the discreetentrance to the Oriental Hotel. They may bepoor, but the irrepressible optimism that isBangkok’s trademark comes through evenwhen times are hard. The Oriental is also one of Bangkok’soases of peace: well-tended gardensand palm trees surrounding a swimmingpool, the quiet hum of waitersand piccolos, a bartender who canmix a hundred exotic drinks and tella thousand anecdotes.Another refuge from the city’s nonstopgo-go speed is Lumpini Park, particularly at the soft glow of dawn,as people crowd lawns and paths topractice t’ai chi, take their daily jog orsail their kites in the fresh morningair. In a narrow side street, you mayspot a small parade of saffron-robedmonks emerge through the half-lightof a temple portal, collecting theirmorning alms.Across town, on weekends, theaction picks up at the enormous, bustlingChatuchak Market, mere walkingdistance from the Mo Chit stationserved by the efficient Skytrain. Herefruits, vegetables, exotic herbs, spices, live animals, authentic and antique(and fake) watches change hands. As the day breaks, the unmistakableoriental perfumed blend of friedspring rolls and smoke from joss sticksbattles the acrid fumes from tuk-tuksand fish drying beside the road. When in Bangkok, you learn to savourthis time of day, before the city’sglorious palette of pastel and goldencolours lose their freshness as exhaustfumes pull a blanket of haze over thecityscape. As it grew into one of the world’sleading metropolises, the city neverlost its power to fascinate, to invitevisitors to indulge in its excesses andstark beauty, to excite the senses aswell as the mind. If you come withpatience, time and tolerance, Bangkokwill amply reward you.Useful web addresses:www.tourismthailand.orgwww.bangkoktourist.comwww.bangkok.comwww.thailandtoday.org10 Norwegian in-flight magazine 11

Itscollection of pagodas and temples never fails toimpress. The unique Laotian mixture of Buddhism,Marxism and puritanism remains a largelyundiscovered experience for most travellers inAsia, as does Vientiane, with its Mekong riversetting against a backdrop of golden templesand processions of saffron-robed monks.Burma (Myanmar)Now a “must visit” destination, Burma does not yethave the capacity* to welcome hordes of visitors.Unforgettable attractions and encounters awaitthose who do make the journey to this countrywhere history is now being made: the thousandpagodas of Bagan; the beauty of Inle Lake; theIrrawaddy river trips. thoughts in the airKiss me, it’s New Year’s EveBy Ian WrightYippee! Come on, everyone, it’s New Year’sEve ... Let’s PARTY! But now comes thereal dilemma, as nothing is ever simple onthis festive night: Where to go? What to wear?Where to collapse? The only guarantee on New Year’s Eve is thatyou know that the evening is either goingto be absolutely brilliant or absolutely dire– there’s no in-between, so the pressure tohave a great time can be immense. It’s also such a special day globally, whichmakes it unique – there’s just no othernight like it on earth. From the Chinesecelebrations in Beijing and hippy Full Moonparties in Goa and Thailand, to a good oldtraditional knees-up in Scotland, the wholeplanet gets to go mad.My first full-on New Year’s was great. When I was young, the only place to be on31 December had to be right in the middleof Trafalgar Square in London, so me anda few friends decided to join the masses, all heading to the big party in the centreof the capital. Even while downing a tastywarm can of cheap supermarket cider andsurrounded by thousands of wild partygoers,I was still able to soak in the iconicscene: right in front of me, in all itsgrandness, the National Gallery. Then, tothe right, the huge St Martin-in-the-Fieldschurch, Charing Cross station and Nelson’sColumn. Behind me, Pall Mall, leading toBuckingham Palace; next to that, Whitehall, where you can look right down the streetto see the Houses of Parliament. All thissplendour just adds to an electric atmosphere. Some people would claim that it’s only a goodnight if you can’t remember a thing about it,but I think that that is just what alcoholicssay. I hardly remember a thing about thatnight. I do recall the area being completelypacked with a swaying sea of drunken,good-humoured revellers, and the nightturning into one massive 80s disco, dancingand singing to bad music. Perfect! Thosewere the days of jumping in the fountains, climbing all over the lion statues, wearingthe policeman’s helmet, and the customarycrazy kissing frenzy at 12 o’clock. This startsas soon as people hear that famous chimingof Big Ben, booming down from Westminsterand signifying the stroke of midnight. Likea horde of flesh-eating zombies smellinghuman blood for the first time, all hell breaksloose. The next year my big New Year’s revellingturned out to be a total failure. The eveningwas spent driving around the Kent countrysidein circles looking for a party, and for the12 o’clock countdown I was in a lay-by at theside of the M2 motorway. Yippee! So, while I was “celebrating” on a cold, deserted road in England, my friends hadhitchhiked to Amsterdam to check out thefestivities abroad. I didn’t go because “Icouldn’t be bothered”. I think I can honestlysay that their Dutch New Year’s was a lotbetter than mine, and to this day it stillmakes me really jealous every time theymention it. Sadly, I cannot recount here theirtales of fun and frolics, because those kindsof stories are for another type of magazinealtogether. All I’m going to say on the matteris that Amsterdam is on my New Year “mustdo” list, and Kent doesn’t even make myChristmas Card list.On a very strange and final note, can I justsay that I find it somewhat bizarre that anold English, 1920s silly comedy sketch calledDinner for One, filmed in 1963 by a Germanfilmmaker using English actors speakingEnglish, has become one of the most iconicsymbols of the New Year’s Eve celebrationsin Germany and all over Scandinavia. Howdid that happen? It’s brilliant! That’s just howsome of these weird and wonderful traditionsstart. It might have begun as a small thingand somehow become a cult hit, which thenspread like wildfire and now New Year andChristmas are not complete without it. Youhave Dinner for One, and we have The Soundof Music, The Wizard of Oz and of courseThe Great Escape.Oh, I’m looking forward to New Year’s Evealready. Orchestras fight to have him play withthem. After 25 years of spending 250 days on theroad, Andsnes now has a reason to hurry awayfrom a life on tour to his own home in Bergen. The arrival of his daughter Sigrid two yearsago brought an end to the musician’s existenceas he knew it.“I used to think that life at home was difficultto deal with, but now I have put down someroots that make me want to come home. That’swhy the tours are much more intense andcompact than before. This year he is celebrating his 25thanniversary as a concert pianist, but he is far from contentto rest on his laurels. This autumn he embarkedon his most ambitious project to date.By Marius Solberg Anfinsen Photo Chris AadlandA constant travellerWe meet up with the down-to-earth musician inLondon, a city he has played in countless times. He is rehearsing ahead of a Beethoven concertthat he is performing with the PhilharmonicOrchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. The day’sfirst practice session is over. In a few hours heis due to rehearse with the other musicians.Andsnes flew in from New York yesterday, willspend a few days in London in connection withthe concert, then after a long weekend at homewith his family in Norway he will fly back tothe USA for a series of concerts in Los Angeles. He performs around 80 concerts a year thesedays, spending six months on the road.“I was nervous about what it would be liketo have a child. I wondered how on earth I wasgoing to do both things well enough. But I’vediscovered it’s a matter of learning by doing,so when I’m at home I am very focused on that. It’s good to have someone there who lives onlyin the moment and doesn’t give a fig about megoing to Los Angeles the next day when shewants to play. And I do find a good balancebetween being mentally present when I’m athome and being focused on the job when I’mtravelling. It was not long before the young Leif Ovewanted to have a go himself.“I started practicing one hand at a time when I wasfive years old, and remember having a really hardtime putting them both together. But after a whileit just clicked into place. From then on I progressedrapidly. By the time I was six or seven, I had startedplaying proper pieces,” he explains. But being the only child in his group of friendsplaying the piano was not always an unalloyed joy.“It was a solitary pursuit, and at times difficult. Ifelt very much on my own with it, but I’d developedmy playing so far that stopping was not an option.”When he was nine he began to take part in youthcompetitions, and he won prizes every time heparticipated. This will be the first timehe has recorded any of the giant’s compositions, and he will be accompanied by the Mahler ChamberOrchestra. It will take him four years to completethe whole Beethoven cycle.“This is probably the most ambitious project I’veever undertaken,” he says. “I haven’t felt ready todo it until now.”The idea came to him in the lift of a hotel hewas staying at in São Paulo, Brazil, a few yearsago. Piano concertos no. 1 and 2 were played overand over again. At first the repetition irritated thepianist, but after a while he found it fascinatinghearing shorter fragments of these pieces everytime he walked into the lift. He found the musichighly original, full of surprises and beauty, andhe decided to tackle them himself.“I realised that it was time for me to join thegrown-ups, and Beethoven is the quintessentialclassical composer. This is a milestone for me,”he says.Andsnes believes that one thing that makesBeethoven so special is the music’s enormousenergy and powerful contrasts. “He is very relevanttoday,” he goes on. “He lived at a time of revolutionand pan-European Napoleonic war, which gavehis music a revolutionary character, and also thefeeling that we go through great human struggleon our way to victory or at least to some kind ofanswer or conclusion. Even in today’s noisy world, this music still shakes us up.”Precocious talentLeif Ove Andsnes was born on Karmøy, an islandcommunity off the west coast of Norway, in 1970.Together with three younger sisters, he grew up onthe windswept shores of the North Sea, surroundedby beautiful scenery. When he had completedhis compulsory schooling at the age of 16 hetherefore left home and went to live in Bergen. Hehad been accepted at the Bergen Music Conservatory.“It was about then that I started thinking of myselfas a pianist, that this was something I could doprofessionally. I never had a Plan B if it hadn’t workedout.”For Andsnes things really began to accelerate. There was no one else of his own age at school. Theothers were 19–20 years old. He was living awayfrom home and practising six or seven hours a dayin addition to his normal classes. When he made hisdebut at the age of 17 orchestras started asking himto do concerts. His parents were still workingin Karmøy, looking after Andsnes’s younger siblings. He was alone and felt out of his depth.“From 15 to 25 was a pretty difficult time for me.Not only because being a teenager is crappy, but Iwas thrown into a completely new life, and had togrow up very fast. It wasn’t always a great success. My personality wasn’t up to the role I was supposedto play. I just wasn’t ready for it. I felt forced into arole I wasn’t comfortable with.”Andsnes’s response was not to act out. “Instead Iclosed off a part of my personality, but at the sametime I realise that those years were crucial for gettingwhere I am today,” he remembers.Leif Ove's love forBeethoven's work hasmade him embark ona four-year projectplaying and recordingBeethoven's five pianoconcertos to audiencesall over the world.36 Norwegian in-flight magazine37

His networkgrew. He began to feel at home in cities such asNew York, London and Berlin. He can now lookback on a career that has produced eight Grammynominations and nine Norwegian music industryawards (Spellemannprisen). He has been awardedthe Royal Norwegian Order of St Olav and countlessother prizes and distinctions both at home andabroad.Family lifeSome 10 years ago he met Ragnhild Lothe, a hornplayer with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.“It took a while before we got together. It was along process for me to realise that I could be happyin a relationship. I was so completely acclimatisedto a life on tour, a life where you only think aboutyourself, that it took time,” he recalls.Today he is glad that he waited as long as he didbefore settling down and having children.“If I had had kids when I was 25, the relationshipwould probably have gone under,” he says candidly.“I wouldn’t have been ready to combine parenthoodand music. I wouldn’t have had the selfconfidence. Now I feel that I had my wild times andwas obsessively single-minded until I turned 40.It is a healthy sign that I now wake up and thinkabout how my partner and daughter are doing – notjust about how I’m doing.”When he is not on tour he enjoys potteringabout his house in Kalfaret, a picturesque partof Bergen that offers fabulous views over theentire city centre. He also has an apartment inCopenhagen, a holiday house in the southernmostpart of Hardanger, and his partner’s family have asummer house in Kjerringøy, in Northern Norway.“We prefer being in the north, and have severalplaces we can stay in Norway and Denmark. I amdependent on the changing seasons we have, andlove being outdoors and close to nature. When I’mat home I also like to spend time in the kitchen.Good food and drink are a passion I devote timeto when I want to relax. I also do some Pilatesand running, to try to keep my body in shape,”he reveals.Never been more motivatedLeif Ove Andsnes has achieved all the recognitionit is possible to receive, and he has played atconcert halls worldwide. What is it that motivateshim today, I ask.“The music,” he replies without hesitation.“Playing new pieces and launching into newprojects. It’s tremendous fun to be on stage atvenues around the world, playing with greatmusicians, but it’s something I’ve been doing for25 years. So if it hadn’t been for the fact that Iam passionate about music, I could easily havebecome blasé.”Asked whether he could imagine becoming fedup with Beethoven by the end of his current fouryearproject, Andsnes smiles and says: “I’m surethere will be times when I chuck the score at thewall and make a run for it. The mini skiMaking old skisnew againWhite slopes and white streets. Sounds of children laughingand shouting. Rosy cheeks and icy fingertips. Who couldforget the endless hours of fun and games in the snow onmini skis?Hamax has sold over 300,000mini skis in Norway since theearly 60s.Scan this QR code and seehow to use the mini skis.By Hilde Sander MelingPhoto OneFootPhoto HamaxThe history of the Norwegian miniski starts in the early 60s. A factorycalled Plast & Form (“Plastic & Design”)– which 20 years later became Hamax– made simple sledges and mini skis, which quickly became very popular. These short plastic skis are still sellingand still popular today. Since theirintroduction, Hamax has sold over150,000 pairs of mini skis in Norwayalone.Mini skis are also popular in Sweden.Manufacturers STIGA report that theyhave sold over 850,000 of their MicroBlades mini skis since they startedmaking them over 30 years ago. Miniskis had their heyday from the late 70sto the early 90s, and their popularityis probably due to the fact that theyare easy to use and require minimalequipment. Just strap them on, findsome snow, and have a blast! They offerwinter fun for young and old alike.New designNow there is a new mini ski set to takeScandinavia by storm. Simen Fornes (35)and Mathias Hansson (35) from Oslo, the men behind the company OneFoot, spent several years modernising theoriginal mini ski before they weresatisfied and dared to order their first5,000 skis for the product launch.“We melted, welded and soldered toimprove our own mini skis, and whenwe started to feel satisfied we sat downand designed a completely new ski. Thatall started in 2008,” says Simen Fornes. After arranging for the prototypes tobe moulded in Taiwan, they tested andtweaked their new product, improvingon some important details to make theski even better. Fornes and Hanssonmade many changes to improve theoriginal Hamax mini ski, and havepatented their design.Long process“We lived for our mini skis when wewere younger,” says Fornes. He and his friends spent a lot oftime on mini skis in those days, buthe was never completely satisfied withthe product – especially the straps thatwould get caked with snow and ice, making it impossible to strap them ontight enough. That gave him the idea todevelop the product.“I got the idea for a new ski back in1995, but it was only four years ago thatI finally sat down with Mathias Hanssonand we decided to go for it.”Entrepreneurial supportIn the summer of 2011, OneFootreceived commercialisation supportfrom Innovation Norway, and that’swhen the ball really started rolling. Inaddition to their jobs as a furnituredesigner and product designer, Fornesand Hansson designed this new miniski. It is now available in selected shopsin Norway and through their onlineshop at onefoot.no. If this winter is asuccess for them, you will see their skisin more European cities in 2013.52 Norwegian in-flight magazine53

The mini skiNEW!“We are working with distributors inSweden, Finland and several other Europeancountries,” says Fornes. In addition, the duo dream of gettingOneFoot skis into the North Americanmarket. And the name – well, there is asimple explanation.“Back when we used mini skis as kids, weonly ever used one – never two – hence thename. The idea is to sell the skis individuallyto emphasise this concept, but there iscertainly nothing wrong with using one oneach foot,” explains Fornes.Make your smartphoneeven smarter.InspirationSkiing and snowboarding have evolved alot since Fornes and Hansson raced down‘The Corkscrew’, a 2.5 km long tobogganrun in Oslo. So, the design process has beengoverned by the way children and youngpeople ski today. The sport has becomemore extreme, and skiers demand more ofa product. The tricks they do, where andhow they ski, and the use of elements suchas rails and jumps, have led to a design thatis wider, longer and has a much better gripon the snow.Fornes emphasises that the snowboardbindings are stable, durable and easy touse – and they don’t ice up.“We want to get people out in the fresh airby offering a toy with a low threshold to bothbuy and use. You don’t need any expensiveequipment or fancy resorts. OneFoot aimsto promote fun and encourage new wintersports skills, for everyone, everywhere. Youcan use the skis in the city, in your garden,in the mountains or at a ski resort.”OneFoot is availablein selected shops inNorway and online atonefoot.noSimen Fornes and Mathias Hansson, the entrepreneurs behind OneFoot, have modernised theoriginal mini ski and are ready to take Scandinavia by storm.ChampionshipsThe new design and bindings mean that you can use the skis with virtuallyany shoe size or model. The main target group is six-to-19-year-olds, butdon’t be surprised to see some adults reliving childhood memories, trickingtheir way through winter on a OneFoot.“We’ve also started the Mini Ski Association and dream of hosting both theNorwegian and World Mini Ski Championships, but it won’t be this winter,”says Fornes, adding that they have been in contact with the Norwegian SkiFederation with the aim of realising that dream. But first he needs to concentrate on getting people excited and givingthem both the knowledge and inspiration to start using the new ski. Hehopes families, schools, clubs and organisations will all benefit from theironline instruction video.Download Norwegian’s new travel assistant.Every detail of your upcoming trip is atyour fi ngertips with Norwegian’s new appfor smartphones. GREEN TRAVELCELEBRATINGTHE CHRISTMAS SEASONNORTHERN STYLETourism is at its best when it helpssafeguard our ways of life and thethings we cherish. As the calendarmoves towards Christmas, NorthernEuropeans gather together in winter’sdarkness by decorating streets andsquares with bright colours, turningtowns and villages into placesof festivity.By Arild MolstadWhile many Nordic Christmas traditionswere born in the Middle Ages, today’sfestivals have also become manifestations of anational character. November and Decemberare months when foreign visitors come to taste, smell and participate in the year-end festivities,to get a real “sense of place.” No matter thatSanta Claus’ workshops are no longer found (aschildren all over the world once believed) at theNorth Pole, but have secretly been outsourcedto China ...Christmas delicaciesLike seasonal creatures getting ready for awinter of hibernation, Scandinavians dedicatethe pre-Christmas months to consuming hugequantities of food. Although relative newcomersto the gourmet scene, local restaurants aremaking up for lost time by turning out buffetsand smörgåsbord of exceptional refinement.Decorated with hard-won Michelin stars, young chefs are now adding innovative twists totraditionally solid game and fish dishes, turningthem into delicious works of culinary art. SaysNorwegian master chef Bent Stiansen: “Theold-fashioned julebord remains, but aroundthe traditional Christmas tables you nowfind a new generation of sophisticated guestswhose palates demand more than kjøttboller(meat balls), duck and lutefisk” (aged stockfishsoaked in lye – an acquired taste fornon-Scandinavians).Not long ago, ordering the ubiquitous,caraway-flavoured spirit aquavit meanta choice between the Norwegian Linieversion, the Danish Aalborg and theSweden’s Skåne variety. Now the powerfuldrink comes in a hundred varieties, according to the bartender at Lofoten’sAkevittloftet, whose cellar has manyrare vintage brands in stock, and whereguests exchange Arctic toasts whileadmiring the dance of the NorthernLights.Celebrate the top-of-Europe holidayseason by taking an old-fashioned sleighride in the winter wonderland of Røros,Norway’s oldest mining town – a WorldHeritage site well worth a side trip fromTrondheim, whose cathedral becomesa site of pilgrimage at Christmas .Or explore Denmark’s quaint cityof Odense, Hans Christian Andersen’sbirthplace, where fairy-tales comealive in the cobbled streets lined bygingerbread-like houses. And don’t missSweden’s romantic Lucia processionon 13 December, with children singingcarols, their faces magically lit up bycandles.www.copenhagenmediacenter.com / juletorvet.dkChristmas celebrationhighlightsin the capitalsCopenhagenFrom mid November Copenhagen, as in the rest ofScandinavia, is overrun by little folk from the fairytales known as nisser. You’ll see them everywhere, intheir long red caps and wooden clogs, precariouslyhanging by their fingertips in shop windows and citysquares.Copenhagen’s holiday season sparkles with tastefuldecorations. Twinkling white lights illuminatenativity scenes and, suspended across the streets, giant garlands of real spruce surround huge redhearts. Danish breweries add to the Yule spirit – asearly as mid November horse-drawn Tuborg andCarlsberg wagons decked out with ribbons andDanish flags appear, delivering the year’s speciallybrewed Julebryg. (For Copenhagen’s best gløgg –mulled wine – make your way to Hviids Vinstue.)The villages of the Tivoli Gardens are open andaglow with Christmas lights and holiday life; morethan 70 different stall keepers present their abundantselection of Danish Christmas décor, seasonal foodand drinks.OsloThe Oslo Philharmonic’s Christmas Concerts takeplace at the Concert Hall during the last ten daysbefore Santa arrives – for many citizens as much of aseasonal must as the lighting of the Christmas tree. The Christmas Fair at the Norwegian Museum ofCultural History – Folkemuseet – is a popular placeto shop for decorations, gifts and homemade craftswhile observing how Norwegians have celebratedChristmas through the ages in their cabins andfarmhouses. Choral music, folk dancing, Christmassweets and hot gløgg are also served up at thispopular spot.StockholmThe Old Town market has been the centre of thecelebrations for a century, with a hundred little redstalls selling glögg, gingerbread cakes, crafts, cheeseand Christmas sweets. For a special treat, try thegrand Christmas buffet of the Solliden restaurant atSkansen, Stockholm’s Open Air Museum.Stockholm’s archipelago is attractive also in winter;dress warm and hop on board for a Strömma cruiseand check out the lunch and dinner buffets on thesequaint boats, outfitted in their Christmas finery. Some even feature seasonal entertainment. www.scenario.noFotograf: Gatis Rozenfeld - F64.lvInterior is everythingWe spend most of our lives indoors. Our well-being is influenced by colors, atmosphere and functionality. The perfect leisure zone or optimal lightingof a room can make an important difference to people’s health and wealth. It’s not the most expensive solutions necessarily, but the most strategic onesthat will unlock the true purpose of a room or area, and bring to life the project’svision. As interior architects, it is our job to make architecture and interiorsperform together. That is why our profession is all about creating the feeling ofultimate ease.RICCOVERO - BYPORTENMandatory withStove Guardin Norwegian HouseholdsAdvertisementFollowing the latest regulations for Norwegian electrical installations, stove guard is now mandatory in every new builthouse in Norway. Several producers have entered the marked the last couple of years, most of them with products thatare not up to standard. Each year 20% of the fires in private homes are caused by improper use of the stove/cookingtop, and cost the society several million euros. The purpose of the stove guard is, unlike smoke detectors, to preventfires. Cenika are these days laying their finishing touch on their contribution to the marked. Cenika is Norwegiancompany situated outside of Drammen, they operate in the professional segment of the electrical installation marked.Prototype Front CoverAKER SOLUTIONS - FORNEBU“Our mission is to design tomorrows environments in the best possible way. All projects - public or private -require the skill to integrate the personality, create optimal functionality and make people feel at ease”.Interior Designer Linda SteenOwner and CEO Scenario interiørarkitekter MNILSKULD - OSLODIPLOM IS - TUSENFRYDPicture: Linda SteenHead of developing, John E Knudsen, explains a little bit for us:“When my colleague and I sat down 2years ago, we laid down the frame of theCentech Stove Guard. It had to be technicallyadvanced, multipurpose capable, reliable, cost efficient and with an attractive design. Now we feel that we have achieved all thesegoals…and some more when we look at thefinished product.”What makes your product so differentfrom the others on the marked?“First of all we are one of few who demanda constant power supply. This is a demandin the building regulations for fire detectionsystems, and we couldn’t see any reason whyit shouldn’t be the same for the stove guard.Secondly we base our product on a High Resinfrared detector. Combined with a powerfulCPU that is capable of reading each temperaturespot several hundred times, each second. This makes the security level very high. Andthe capability of ruling out false alarms is fargreater than some of our competitors. The electrical installation businessis not famous for groundbreakingdesigns. How will your Stove Guardblend in with the luxurious taste oftoday’s consumer?“We have put a lot of effort into the designof this product; it has to be discreet to fitinto todays, modern kitchens. The primaryconcern was of course to make somethingout of the ordinary. Something the electricalbusiness hadn’t seen before, and that hadcurves to blend into every environment. Wealso thought about the fact that in some casesit had to be possible to custom build. I feelthat we have achieved that goal with today’sdesign and production technique.”With so many different installationstoday, with Smart houses, intelligentalarm systems and so one. How doyou think it is possible to integratethis product in these systems?“We were thinking on several solutions tothis challenge. At first it would be natural tohook up with one of the bigger systems, likeKNX. But with the development of the markedwith new innovation and smaller producerswith many good qualitys, we decided to basethe communication upon a potential-freeconnection. That will enable us communicatewith almost every system on the marked.”How easy is it for the users tooperate the StoveGuard?“First of all, the StoveGuard is built forthe user, never to consider its existence atall. But the possibility for situations causingthe StoveGuard to go off is always there. We have added a reset switch, to allow theusers to go beyond the alarmpoint for a shortamount of time. Or reset the unit if it shouldbe triggered. This is located on the unit itself. But we have also considered the elderly anddisabled that may not reach to the back wallof the coocking top with ease. For this groupwe have developed a wireless switch, whichcan be integrated in existing lightswitchpanels.”We thank John Knudsen for his time, andlook with excitement on a business pushedto innovation with the new regulations onhousehold security. Time will show whichtest criteria CENELEC will present to regulatethe business. In this way to exclude the lessserious actors in this marked. We are surethat Cenika has covered all the loopholes andpresents a high quality product, which willhelp make homes, safer for years to come.Svein Tore Moe,CEO CenikaJohn Knudsen,Head of developingCenikaPhone: +47 32 24 03 00 or +47 41 14 30 52Email: cac@cenika.no www.cenika.no

Norwegian’s tail iconsIvoCaprinoHe spent six years working to complete Norway’s greatest-ever filmsuccess, Flåklypa Grand Prix (Pinchcliffe Grand Prix). Forty yearson, Ivo Caprino’s family are still working with the same much-lovedpuppets, to the delight of fans old and new.By Nina Blågestad Photo Caprino Filmcenter ASIvo Gude Caprino (1920–2001) was aNorwegian animator, film producer, director and inventor. The delightfulpuppet figures in his films have becomenational treasures, be they Solan (“SonnyDuckworth”) and Ludvig (“Lambert”)from Flåklypa Grand Prix, or Askeladden(“The Ashlad”) from his many filmversions of old Norwegian folk tales.Family of artistsIvo could thank both his mother andhis wife for his great interest in stopmotionanimation. His mother wasthe granddaughter of the famousNorwegian painter Hans Gude, andwas an extremely talented illustratorand model maker. Through his wife, the actress Liv Bredal, Ivo was alsointroduced to the world of film.Ivo’s son, Remo Caprino, who nowruns his father’s studios along with hisown son, explains: “He wanted to dosomething with these fantastic puppetfigures that my grandmother made, and started making films as a hobbyalongside working in my grandfather’sfurniture-making workshop. Aftera while, my grandfather gave him anultimatum: ‘Do you intend to go onplaying with dolls, or are you going todo some proper work?’”Fortunately, Ivo didn’t listen to hisfather, and in 1948 he made his debutwith his first animated puppet film, usingpuppets modelled by his mother. Therefollowed a large number of stop-motionanimated puppet films, both shorts andfeature films. He was particularly fondof the traditional Norwegian folk tales, and his bringing-to-life of well-knownfigures from the much-loved storieshas left a deep impression on manygenerations of Norwegians.Norway’s greatest-everfilm successFlåklypa Grand Prix (released in the UK asPinchcliffe Grand Prix) was Ivo Caprino’sbiggest feature film production. It tookseven people six years to create the filmby stop-motion photography, whichinvolved moving the puppets by smallincrements for every single frame. Thefilm had its premiere in August 1975, tooverwhelming public response, explainsRemo Caprino, who was also involvedon the production side as productionmanager, assistant director, and one ofthe four screenwriters.“It is definitively the biggest-everbox office hit in Norway and has sold5.5 million cinema tickets. That weare still working with the film almost40 years later is quite incredible,” saysRemo Caprino. He explains that the filmwas originally intended as a series forbroadcasting on Norwegian television, but the project was abandoned. And sofor Ivo Caprino’s film company it wasa case of “to be or not to be” – whateventually became a full-length featurefilm just had to be a success. As well asbeing Norway’s greatest movie successof all time, it has been dubbed into13 different languages and has alsotopped the box office charts in manyother countries.BilledtekstThe magic lives onBoth Caprino Filmcenter AS and FlåklypaGrand Prix are still very much alive andkicking. The family film business isthe oldest in the world that is stillowned and run by the same family. Thefoundation built by Ivo has become athriving workplace for several generationsof Caprinos. The Caprino studios havealso restored the old folk-tale-based shortfilms, and have moved on to using the newtechnology of computer animation. Theyhave also developed a Flåklypa GrandPrix computer game, now available forPC, Nintendo DS, iPhone and iPad.“Dad instilled in me a golden rule, andthat was never to compromise on quality, even if it doesn’t make you rich,” says RemoCaprino with a smile. What was he like as a person?“He was a workaholic who always gave110 per cent. I myself grew up inside a fairytale; if I wanted to be with my father, it hadto be in the studio. He was a fairy-tale heroof Norwegian film-making,” concludesRemo Caprino.Experience the wonderfulworld of Ivo CaprinoThe Hunderfossen Family Park at Lillehammerhas its very own ‘Caprinoland’, with a huge,14-metre-high troll and a full-scale replica ofthe fabulous giant racing car ‘Il Tempo Gigante’from Flåklypa Grand Prix. At the Norwegian FilmMuseum in Oslo, you can take a closer look atIvo Caprino’s puppets.Read more at www.caprino.no104 Norwegian in-flight magazine105
