PortraitNorwegianHvor vil du dra i 2013?When we met upwith Leif Ove hewas rehearsing for aBeethoven concertwith the PhilharmonicOrchestra at the RoyalFestival Hall in London. He gritted his teeth, worked extremely hard andclimbed ever onward towards the top. His networkgrew. He began to feel at home in cities such asNew York, London and Berlin. He can now lookback on a career that has produced eight Grammynominations and nine Norwegian music industryawards (Spellemannprisen). He has been awardedthe Royal Norwegian Order of St Olav and countlessother prizes and distinctions both at home andabroad.Family lifeSome 10 years ago he met Ragnhild Lothe, a hornplayer with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.“It took a while before we got together. It was along process for me to realise that I could be happyin a relationship. I was so completely acclimatisedto a life on tour, a life where you only think aboutyourself, that it took time,” he recalls.Today he is glad that he waited as long as he didbefore settling down and having children.“If I had had kids when I was 25, the relationshipwould probably have gone under,” he says candidly.“I wouldn’t have been ready to combine parenthoodand music. I wouldn’t have had the selfconfidence. Now I feel that I had my wild times andwas obsessively single-minded until I turned 40.It is a healthy sign that I now wake up and thinkabout how my partner and daughter are doing – notjust about how I’m doing.”When he is not on tour he enjoys potteringabout his house in Kalfaret, a picturesque partof Bergen that offers fabulous views over theentire city centre. He also has an apartment inCopenhagen, a holiday house in the southernmostpart of Hardanger, and his partner’s family have asummer house in Kjerringøy, in Northern Norway.“We prefer being in the north, and have severalplaces we can stay in Norway and Denmark. I amdependent on the changing seasons we have, andlove being outdoors and close to nature. When I’mat home I also like to spend time in the kitchen.Good food and drink are a passion I devote timeto when I want to relax. I also do some Pilatesand running, to try to keep my body in shape,”he reveals.Never been more motivatedLeif Ove Andsnes has achieved all the recognitionit is possible to receive, and he has played atconcert halls worldwide. What is it that motivateshim today, I ask.“The music,” he replies without hesitation.“Playing new pieces and launching into newprojects. It’s tremendous fun to be on stage atvenues around the world, playing with greatmusicians, but it’s something I’ve been doing for25 years. So if it hadn’t been for the fact that Iam passionate about music, I could easily havebecome blasé.”Asked whether he could imagine becoming fedup with Beethoven by the end of his current fouryearproject, Andsnes smiles and says: “I’m surethere will be times when I chuck the score at thewall and make a run for it. But he has so much tooffer, and is so varied that I think I’ll be able tostick it out.”Nå får du 15% rabattpå utdanning frem til 15. januar.Kampanjekode [NORWEGIAN] ved bestilling på nki.no.*Ta utdanning på alle nivåerVelg blant over 300 studierog kursStudér når du vil, hvor du vilFå vitnemål fra ledendehøgskoler og universiteterNKI Nettstudier tar deg dit du vil.
