thoughts in the airKiss me, it’s New Year’s EveBy Ian WrightYippee! Come on, everyone, it’s New Year’sEve ... Let’s PARTY! But now comes thereal dilemma, as nothing is ever simple onthis festive night: Where to go? What to wear?Where to collapse? The only guarantee on New Year’s Eve is thatyou know that the evening is either goingto be absolutely brilliant or absolutely dire– there’s no in-between, so the pressure tohave a great time can be immense. It’s also such a special day globally, whichmakes it unique – there’s just no othernight like it on earth. From the Chinesecelebrations in Beijing and hippy Full Moonparties in Goa and Thailand, to a good oldtraditional knees-up in Scotland, the wholeplanet gets to go mad.My first full-on New Year’s was great. When I was young, the only place to be on31 December had to be right in the middleof Trafalgar Square in London, so me anda few friends decided to join the masses, all heading to the big party in the centreof the capital. Even while downing a tastywarm can of cheap supermarket cider andsurrounded by thousands of wild partygoers,I was still able to soak in the iconicscene: right in front of me, in all itsgrandness, the National Gallery. Then, tothe right, the huge St Martin-in-the-Fieldschurch, Charing Cross station and Nelson’sColumn. Behind me, Pall Mall, leading toBuckingham Palace; next to that, Whitehall, where you can look right down the streetto see the Houses of Parliament. All thissplendour just adds to an electric atmosphere. Some people would claim that it’s only a goodnight if you can’t remember a thing about it,but I think that that is just what alcoholicssay. I hardly remember a thing about thatnight. I do recall the area being completelypacked with a swaying sea of drunken,good-humoured revellers, and the nightturning into one massive 80s disco, dancingand singing to bad music. Perfect! Thosewere the days of jumping in the fountains, climbing all over the lion statues, wearingthe policeman’s helmet, and the customarycrazy kissing frenzy at 12 o’clock. This startsas soon as people hear that famous chimingof Big Ben, booming down from Westminsterand signifying the stroke of midnight. Likea horde of flesh-eating zombies smellinghuman blood for the first time, all hell breaksloose. The next year my big New Year’s revellingturned out to be a total failure. The eveningwas spent driving around the Kent countrysidein circles looking for a party, and for the12 o’clock countdown I was in a lay-by at theside of the M2 motorway. Yippee! So, while I was “celebrating” on a cold, deserted road in England, my friends hadhitchhiked to Amsterdam to check out thefestivities abroad. I didn’t go because “Icouldn’t be bothered”. I think I can honestlysay that their Dutch New Year’s was a lotbetter than mine, and to this day it stillmakes me really jealous every time theymention it. Sadly, I cannot recount here theirtales of fun and frolics, because those kindsof stories are for another type of magazinealtogether. All I’m going to say on the matteris that Amsterdam is on my New Year “mustdo” list, and Kent doesn’t even make myChristmas Card list.On a very strange and final note, can I justsay that I find it somewhat bizarre that anold English, 1920s silly comedy sketch calledDinner for One, filmed in 1963 by a Germanfilmmaker using English actors speakingEnglish, has become one of the most iconicsymbols of the New Year’s Eve celebrationsin Germany and all over Scandinavia. Howdid that happen? It’s brilliant! That’s just howsome of these weird and wonderful traditionsstart. It might have begun as a small thingand somehow become a cult hit, which thenspread like wildfire and now New Year andChristmas are not complete without it. Youhave Dinner for One, and we have The Soundof Music, The Wizard of Oz and of courseThe Great Escape.Oh, I’m looking forward to New Year’s Evealready.
