However, hedgehogs are <strong>in</strong>need of help and are now evenclassed as an endangered species <strong>in</strong>Brita<strong>in</strong>.Road casualties and loss of habitatare the ma<strong>in</strong> causes of a decl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>the U.K. hedgehog population.Changes <strong>in</strong> farm<strong>in</strong>g and landmanagement have led to fewerplaces for hedgehogs to live andforage <strong>in</strong> the countryside and this,added to a loss of gardens to forage<strong>in</strong> as people turn them <strong>in</strong>to carpark<strong>in</strong>g spaces or deck<strong>in</strong>g-coveredpatios all means less room for oursp<strong>in</strong>y friends.Annie Parfitt, who lives <strong>in</strong>Brimscombe, set up the Help AHedgehog Hospital to care for sick,<strong>in</strong>jured and orphaned hedgehogs andhoglets. Annie is a Volunteer Carerfor the British Hedgehog PreservationSociety and the Help a HedgehogHospital is run solelyon donations from hedgehog lovers.In order to f<strong>in</strong>d out more about thehedgehog population <strong>in</strong>Gloucestershire, she is start<strong>in</strong>g torecord sight<strong>in</strong>gs and other<strong>in</strong>formation about our local “hogs”.Maureen Reader, the Help aHedgehog Hospital contact for theM<strong>in</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>hampton area would like toobta<strong>in</strong> details of any hedgehogs thatvisit your gardens or that are seendead on our local roads.It is particularly important that wemonitor the weight of any babies <strong>in</strong> thearea so that they do not die <strong>in</strong>hibernation.Maureen Reader can be contactedon 01453 883489 or 07717 551908Maureen will also collect any sick or<strong>in</strong>jured hedgehogs found by you <strong>in</strong>the M<strong>in</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>hampton area so that theycan receive care and veter<strong>in</strong>arytreatment from the Help A HedgehogHospital before be<strong>in</strong>g released back<strong>in</strong>to the countryside.
