Large-scale peatland rewett<strong>in</strong>g programmeIn reaction to the extensive peat fi res <strong>in</strong> 2010, the<strong>Russia</strong>n Government started a large-scale rewett<strong>in</strong>gprogramme <strong>in</strong> Moscow oblast and adjacent regions.With<strong>in</strong> the framework of <strong>Russia</strong>n-German bilateralcooperation, technical assistance and <strong>in</strong>ternationalexpertise is provided by the global NGO <strong>Wetlands</strong><strong>International</strong>, the Michael Succow Foundation,Greifswald University and the Institute of ForestScience of the <strong>Russia</strong>n Academy of Sciences.Together,the partners provide <strong>in</strong>put for the restoration andrewett<strong>in</strong>g of more than 40,000 hectares of degraded<strong>peatlands</strong> and assist Moscow oblast <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>gan <strong>in</strong>ventory of peatland areas, evaluat<strong>in</strong>g theirsusceptibility to fi re and monitor<strong>in</strong>g their greenhousegas emissions.The partners will also develop guidel<strong>in</strong>es for peatlandconservation and rehabilitation, and advise on nationalplann<strong>in</strong>g and implementation of rewett<strong>in</strong>g activities.Sphagnum farm<strong>in</strong>g as a form of paludiculture - susta<strong>in</strong>able use ofrewetted <strong>peatlands</strong> <strong>in</strong> Germany.
