News from <strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong> Health Foundation • ISSUE 2 | SUMMER 2012Care giving“I am excited towork with dedicatedphysicians, staff andadministrators tocontinue our focus onquality and ensure weare delivering the bestpossible patient careand experience.”Briefings<strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong> Health’s <strong>First</strong> <strong>CMO</strong>New Chief Medical Officer Irving Pike, M.D.,will serve as a full-time physician participatingat the highest level of administration.His top priority is advancing <strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong> Health’s tradition of excellencephotography by akim aginskyDistinguished gastroenterologist Irving Pike, M.D.,first heard of <strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong> Health when he was stillpracticing in Virginia Beach, Va., and one day leafedthrough the annual U.S.News & World Report issuethat ranks U.S. health systems. “I saw that both theConcord and Walnut Creek campuses were rankedamong the top five hospitals in Northern Californiaand several specialty areas were ranked among thebest in the country,” says Dr. Pike, who couldn’t helpnoticing his own specialty among them.Six months, a national search and several roundsof interviews later, Dr. Pike was selected as <strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong>Health’s first Chief Medical Officer (<strong>CMO</strong>). He callsthe appointment, which began April 9, the chance of alifetime—personally and professionally. “Since my twoadult children have relocated to the Bay Area, I hadbeen paying particular attention to opportunities onthe West Coast,” says Dr. Pike, whose career includes12 years as a physician executive for Sentara Healthcare,a Virginia integrated health system with 10 acutecare hospitals, and current membership on the AmericanCollege of Gastroenterology’s Board of Trustees.“As <strong>CMO</strong> at <strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong> Health, I will have the opportunityto be a member of its Senior Leadership Teamand offer a clinical perspective—a necessary elementfor a comprehensive health care system.”Dr. Pike recognizes that in order for <strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong>Health to maintain and enhance its already very highlevel of quality care, philanthropy will be key. “<strong>John</strong><strong>Muir</strong> Health can give so much to this community becausethe community gives so generously to us,” hesays. “But finding more efficient ways to offer qualityhealth care is essential. As he putsit, “We don’t just lift people, we lift spirits.”Using specialized lifting equipment, Lift Teammembers safely and comfortably lift and move<strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong> Health patients. On any given day at theWalnut Creek and Concord hospitals, up to 200patients are transferred to a chair for meals, assistedto a gurney for a procedure or repositionedin bed for greater comfort.“As a multidisciplinary team, we considerourselves a safety department,” says Nowlin. Duringa medical emergency, Lift Team members actas the lead on chest compressions. The team alsoeducates nurses and staff on body mechanics andsafe lifting techniques.The team was the brainchild of Barbara Kroll,Director of Employee Health Management, whosaw the benefit of having dedicated and expert lifttechnicians on duty at the hospitals. Now, aftermore than 10 years of service, their efforts haveproved to be a great success. Since the inceptionof the Lift Team, the number of injuries from liftingpatients has been reduced by 85 percent. “We’reahead of the curve,” Nowlin says. “<strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong>Health has always put safety and quality first forpatients and staff.”Nowlin has done some heavy lifting on his ownby contributing to the Foundation’s recent EmployeeCampaign through payroll deduction. “This is anorganization that has encouraged me to grow,” hesays. “I’m happy to give back, and supporting <strong>John</strong><strong>Muir</strong> Health through the Foundation gives me thatopportunity.”Speaking of growth, Nowlin is pursuing amaster’s degree in health care administration, withan emphasis in gerontology. The Lift Team has alsobeen a springboard for other members’ health carecareers, including two M.D.s, five R.N.s, five paramedics,two X-ray technicians, a respiratory technician,four physical therapists and three “alumni”who launched lift teams at other organizations.Copyright © 2012 by <strong>John</strong> <strong>Muir</strong> Health Foundation.
