Sport at The <strong>Ashcombe</strong>Sports DayJuly 20<strong>02</strong>This year’s Sports Day was a ratherwet and windy affair. Sadly, itcould not be held in the new SportsHall, but all pupils and staff bravedthe elements to enable the events torun smoothly and safely.Well done to all competitors and itis hoped that you enjoyed the day andwork hard to improve on yourperformance for next year.Boy and Girl Athlete of the Year Award(Best 2 events)Girls Points Boys PointsYear 7 Rebecca Gardner 48 Richard Moorcroft 53Year 8 Mikyla Richards 51 Chris Black 56Year 9 Sarah Boreham 60 Toby Barker 50Field events were held earlier inthe year, when the sun shone a littlemore, as it is very important to have adry surface from which to throw andjump. The events that the pupilscould take part in were: Shot Putt,Javelin, Discus, Long Jump and TripleJump.The day for the track events was adifferent affair. At times the heavensopened and at others it was beautifulsunshine. However, all competitorscompleted their races and each yeargroup came out to watch their peersand friends compete. Most came wellprepared for the weather…It was pleasing to see many pupilsenjoying the day. All pupils whocame 1st, 2nd or 3rd received acertificate for their achievements.The pupils listed in the table on thispage received the Athlete of the Yearaward for scoring the highest score intwo different events.Year 10 Jemma Sayers 54 Joe Bullen 60QuestionnaireThis June has seen a majorevaluation of Clubs and Activitiesbeing arranged by the PE department.All pupils in Years 7-10 have beeninformed in assemblies and havebeen given the opportunity to expresstheir views through a questionnaire.The results will inform our planningand a sports forum will be held todiscuss some of the finer issuesraised.Sports AwardsEarlier in the year morenominations and awards weregiven to pupils in all years in a varietyof sporting activities. Badges fornominations in the summer termwere awarded in assemblies on thepupils’ return in September. It is feltthat this was a positive start to theschool year and raised the profile ofsporting opportunities for new andexisting pupils. Thanks once againmust go to the <strong>Ashcombe</strong> Trust for itsgenerous contributions to thisproject.Triathlon newsJoe Carter and Robert Wright (both<strong>11</strong>XT) were part of the winningYouth ‘B’ age-group Modern Triathlonteam in the National Championshipsin May. Together with Owen Smithfrom St Andrews’ <strong>School</strong> inLeatherhead, they qualified in theSouth East Regional Championshipsand then travelled to Wolverhamptonwhere they competed against 15 and16 year-olds in the three disciplinesof air-pistol shooting, swimming(200m) and running (2000m).As individuals all three wereyoung in the age-group and finished8th, 9th and 13th overall.As a team however, theircombined points could not be beaten.Joe and Owen have been invited totake part in the Youth Training Campand European Selection Trials run bythe MPAGB* at Millfield <strong>School</strong> inJuly.Robert attended a similar camplast year when he was NationalChampion in the Youth ‘C’ age-group.*Modern Pentathion Association ofGreat Britain6
