Dr. Julie Gross McAdamPhD, Founder of <strong>the</strong> MacArt ProgramBoard Member of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Dementia</strong> Care, Melbourne, AustraliaKeynote Speaker Presentation Title:The Role of Storytell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Art of RemembranceJulie Gross McAdam PhD is a gerontologist, an author and <strong>the</strong> program director ofMAC.ART, an established, <strong>in</strong>ternationally respected and multiaward w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g dementia-specific art asrecreation <strong>the</strong>rapy program (www.macart.com.au). Established <strong>in</strong> 2001, <strong>the</strong> MAC.ART program draws on <strong>the</strong>life-story experiences of participants to create large scale, permanent, communal artworks. For <strong>the</strong> pastdecade, Dr Gross McAdam has directed over three thousand artists <strong>in</strong> aged and community healthcaresett<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> Australia and North America, to create more than thirty communal artworks that depict <strong>the</strong> lifeand times of <strong>the</strong> contribut<strong>in</strong>g participants. Dr Gross McAdam is a Board Member of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>Dementia</strong> Care (North America). She holds undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> graphic arts,recreation <strong>the</strong>rapy, aged care and dementia services. These qualifications <strong>in</strong>clude a Graduate Certificate <strong>in</strong>Aged Services, a Graduate Diploma <strong>in</strong> <strong>Dementia</strong> Care and Service, and a Master of Health Science – AgedServices degree. Her ongo<strong>in</strong>g research and PhD <strong>the</strong>sis focuses on <strong>the</strong> relationship between art and wellbe<strong>in</strong>g<strong>for</strong> those liv<strong>in</strong>g with dementia. Dr Gross McAdam’s presentation at <strong>the</strong> <strong>CECD</strong> <strong>2013</strong> <strong>Symposium</strong> <strong>in</strong> Perth – TheHeal<strong>in</strong>g Power of Storytell<strong>in</strong>g – will focus on <strong>the</strong> role of storytell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> art of remembrance.Abstract:“Give people a fact or an idea and you enlighten <strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>ds. Jo MarshallMBA (UWA)Presentation Title:Open Space Style DiscussionJo Marshall has a background <strong>in</strong> management and education. She is passionateabout facilitat<strong>in</strong>g a work place or a “school place” that is challeng<strong>in</strong>g and satisfy<strong>in</strong>g- a place where people can make mean<strong>in</strong>gful contribution and also grow anddevelop - consider<strong>in</strong>g that we spend a large proportion of our lives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se spaces.Jo has an MBA Advanced (UWA 2000) and completed <strong>the</strong> Diploma of Professional Coach<strong>in</strong>g with Coach School<strong>in</strong> 2004. Jo has worked at Edith Cowan University and The University of Western Australia, and now works atCentral Institute of Technology <strong>in</strong> Management and Bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Jo recently completed a Masterclass <strong>in</strong>Instructional Intelligence (Advanced Facilitation) her current challenge is <strong>in</strong> redevelop<strong>in</strong>g sessions fromclassroom delivery to “simulated workplaces” to help engage students and make <strong>the</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g process evenmore <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and practical. As part of this process, Jo has facilitated Diploma level class groups <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>gand manag<strong>in</strong>g conferences <strong>for</strong> real world clients <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>CECD</strong>.Summary:Open space has a structure that allows <strong>for</strong> self-organis<strong>in</strong>g by participants with<strong>in</strong> a framework expla<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong>facilitator. This section has been <strong>in</strong>troduced by <strong>the</strong> symposium <strong>in</strong> response to requests from previoussymposium participants recommend<strong>in</strong>g more discussion and network<strong>in</strong>g time <strong>for</strong> participants. The OpenSpace <strong>for</strong>mat <strong>in</strong>vites <strong>in</strong>dividuals to put <strong>for</strong>ward discussion topics and questions that will be addresses <strong>in</strong> smallgroups. This <strong>for</strong>mat guarantees that all of <strong>the</strong> issues that are MOST important to <strong>the</strong> participants will beraised. This technique also respects <strong>the</strong> knowledge, ideas and creativity that every participant br<strong>in</strong>gs to <strong>the</strong>symposium and <strong>the</strong>se group discussions. It ensures that stories and knowledge are shared, we all learn fromeach o<strong>the</strong>r and conversations that matter are enjoyed by all.<strong>for</strong> artists with disabilities.Kate Campbell-PopePresentation Title:Strands of Mean<strong>in</strong>gKate Campbell-Pope is a Visual Artist with over 20 years’ experience. She exhibitsher work locally, <strong>in</strong>terstate, and <strong>in</strong>ternationally. Kate's practice has <strong>in</strong>cludedteach<strong>in</strong>g, community arts, and public art. Kate is also an Occupational Therapistwho has specialised <strong>in</strong> Aged Care <strong>for</strong> most of her career, and has a special<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>Dementia</strong> Care. Kate has undertaken several <strong>in</strong>tergenerationalart projects <strong>in</strong> aged care facilities, and her current DADAA work is as a mentorSummary:Strands of Mean<strong>in</strong>g explores <strong>the</strong> potential of textile-based media and projects <strong>for</strong> people with <strong>Dementia</strong>.Us<strong>in</strong>g familiar skills, enjoy<strong>in</strong>g company and stories, and participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a group project with an outcome togenerate cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong>terest, are hallmarks of this way of work<strong>in</strong>g. Examples are discussed, <strong>in</strong> addition tosome practical ideas and show<strong>in</strong>g of samples. Chizu K<strong>in</strong>noPresentation Title:Surviv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> TsunamiMs Chizu K<strong>in</strong>no jo<strong>in</strong>ed Kesen-en Geriatric Health Services Facility <strong>in</strong> 1993. Shebecame manager of <strong>the</strong> Kesen Area Rehabilitation Support Centre <strong>in</strong> 2001 whilework<strong>in</strong>g at Kesen-en. She has been <strong>the</strong> director of Kesen-en Day Care Centre s<strong>in</strong>ce2003.She is also a qualified <strong>in</strong>structor <strong>for</strong> Iwate prefecture’s dementia care tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gprograms and care manger tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs.After <strong>the</strong> Great East Japan Earthquake <strong>in</strong> 2011, she worked as <strong>the</strong> coord<strong>in</strong>ator <strong>for</strong> a team of rehabilitationprofessionals who were deployed to two cities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> disaster-hit area. Delvene Cornwall and Sue CornwallPresentation Title: Aborig<strong>in</strong>al PerspectivesBr<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g spark of life to <strong>the</strong> Aborig<strong>in</strong>al Community and understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Aborig<strong>in</strong>al culture.Summary:Sue and Delvene are <strong>the</strong> first Aborig<strong>in</strong>al women Spark of Life Master Practitioners and will share whatcomplet<strong>in</strong>g this course has meant to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g and heal<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir community and cultureThey will share some ideas about how to creatively support Aborig<strong>in</strong>al people liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> aged care facilities.Delvene CornwallDelvene is a Bibbulmun/Noongar Yorga and she is currently work<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong>Department of Environment and Conservation as <strong>the</strong> senior female heritage officer.She has been <strong>in</strong> a privileged position to share and teach o<strong>the</strong>rs about her amaz<strong>in</strong>gculture. One of her roles is to provide a balance with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> culture by highlight<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> important roles women play <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir culture.Delvene herself is a mo<strong>the</strong>r to two beautiful children.Delvene has graduated <strong>in</strong> 2012 as a Spark of Life Master Practitioner, and toge<strong>the</strong>rwith her mum were <strong>the</strong> first two Aborig<strong>in</strong>al women to undertake <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternationalcourse.Sue CornwallSue Khan-Cornwall is an Aborig<strong>in</strong>al lady who was a child of <strong>the</strong> stolen generation <strong>in</strong>Australia.Sue and her five bro<strong>the</strong>rs were taken away when she was 9 years old <strong>in</strong> 1967, whereshe spent 6 years of her life <strong>in</strong> a Baptist mission. It was government policy of <strong>the</strong> daythat was en<strong>for</strong>ced and had far reach<strong>in</strong>g effects on all <strong>in</strong>volved, and still affects <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong>ir lives today because <strong>the</strong>y don’t understand why it happened.In 2012 Sue qualified as a Master Practitioner <strong>in</strong> Spark of Life, and considers thatthis philosophy to positive human relationships is go<strong>in</strong>g to help her community withits heal<strong>in</strong>g process.Project Managed by <strong>the</strong> Students ofDiploma of Bus<strong>in</strong>ess/Diploma of Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Adm<strong>in</strong>istrationPage 4
