RECREATION AND CULTUREFeatured Outdoor Recreation Facilities:Park Land<strong>Marathon</strong> has 56 hectares of municipalparkland, well exceeding the recommendedratio of 1.8 hectares per 1,000 people. IncludingPenn Lake Park, Peninsula Golf Course andBoard of Education properties, the supply ofparkland increases to over 15 hectares per1,000 people. <strong>Marathon</strong>’s parkland providesdesignated areas and facilities for a wide varietyof four-season recreational activity includinghiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, andmountain biking.Peninsula Golf Course<strong>Marathon</strong> has a beautiful, public 9-hole golfcourse overlooking Lake Superior and designedby Stanley Thompson, CGA. A licensed clubhouse and concession, rental equipment, proshop and CPGA Pro, are on site.Cross Country Ski TrailsThis facility was the training site for theCanadian Team in preparation for the 1995Nordic World Ski Championships. The trailsystem contains over 14 kilometres of groomedclassic and skate skiing trails including lit trailsfor night skiing. The Community ServicesDepartment offers a full range of poolprogramming including the Canadian Red CrossAquaquest water safety program, LifesavingSociety programs, advanced training andcourses, aquafitness, family and open swims,and school programs.<strong>Marathon</strong> Arena<strong>Marathon</strong> is home to Kris Wirtz, two-timeCanadian Pairs Figure Skating Champion andOlympian. Weekday hockey and figure skating,weekend tournaments and special events, andpublic skating time make the <strong>Marathon</strong> arena avery busy facility from August to April.<strong>Marathon</strong> Bowling LanesThe <strong>Marathon</strong> Bowling Lanes are located in thelower level of Lakeview Community Hall. Thisfacility offers 6 lanes for 5 pin bowling, alicensed concession and equipment rentals.<strong>Marathon</strong> Curling Club<strong>Marathon</strong>’s curling club is owned and operatedby its members.
