Spink Banknotes 12037 pages:Layout 1 24/8/12 10:20 Page 2FOREWORDBySIR MERVYN KINGGovernor of the Bank of EnglandWelcome to the third auction of low-numbered banknotes instigated by the Bank ofEngland. The auction follows the issue in November 2011 of the £50 banknotefeaturing the renowned 18th century business partners Matthew Boulton and JamesWatt, and it is these notes that dominate the auction. The proceeds of the auction will be donated to two charities chosen by Bank of Englandstaff: the British Association for Adoption and Fostering and the Kids Company. Bothcharities are focused on providing care and support for children in the UK and offeringthem a better start on which to build their future. The British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) helps to find families for someof the most vulnerable children in the country. There are nearly 90,000 children in carein the UK who need the security of a permanent family: the BAAF seeks to provide thisby finding appropriate family pairings. The Kids Company seeks to provide practical, emotional and educational support tovulnerable children living in inner-city London. It focuses on helping to empowerchildren who have dealt with very insecure home environments, and seeks to providethem with support to grow in confidence and have more fulfilling lives.I am sure the auction will be a great success. I am very grateful to Spink for their helpin organising the auction, and to De La Rue for their sponsorship of this catalogue. Iwish all those participating an enjoyable evening. I hope that your collections and thecharities will benefit greatly from the event.Page 2
