t has been a beautiful spring and
we are planting tomatoes about
as early as prudently possible…in
fact, it may even be the earliest for our central
Indiana crop. This will facilitate an earlier fresh pack
start at our Elwood location. The manufacturing facilities
were busier than ever this winter, with Kaizen events taking up
any spare time. Kaizens from 5S to paste yield recovery, to operator
clean-inspect and lube (CIL) promise an even more efficient
spring season and fresh pack, which is only a short three months away.
When you’re a tomato guy, you think “pack” is fun, but for those who define
fun a little differently, we have something for you to enjoy this spring. Red
Gold is sponsoring a race car in the world-famous, Indianapolis 500! We
are one of the sponsors for the Rubicon Racing team, car #44, driven by
“Mad Max” Papis. Max is the son-in-law of Emerson Fittipaldi, a past Indy
winner.
The owners of the car are Jim Freudenberg and Jason Priestly, who you will
remember as ‘Brandon Walsh’ from the TV show, ‘90210’. Our branded
Foodservice division is working closely with the other sponsors who
include: Boston Market, GEICO, Live Lock, Watson’s and Sharp. Look at
our bulletin boards for all sorts of Red Gold/Indy 500 related activities in the
month of May. Also, if you happen to attend the race, you’ll notice the cool
Red Gold ketchup carts when you get your obligatory hot dog (see related
article). Any sporting event is more fun when you’re cheering for your
favorite competitor, so this year’s race will be an event that every Red Gold
employee can embrace!
Ok, back to tomato reality…The Distribution Center is diligently working on
the Warehouse Management System (WMS), which is scheduled for implementation
in June. Elwood added another couple of slots on their very busy
schedule, with the addition of 64 ounce PET juice to Line #2, and another
Winpak 9gram ketchup packet machine.
The new 30 unit seasonal housing project at Geneva is on schedule, along
with the peel room redesign, which includes five new alpha color sorters.
Geneva has also been busy putting in new ‘green’ lighting in the production
area, as well as installing a new salsa packaging line.
At Orestes, the work at the waste treatment facility is progressing well.
They have also completed mechanical upgrades
to Packaging Line #5 to produce cases with preprinted
shrink wrap. This will enhance the
image of our products in club stores. A
new pallet dispenser is nearly ready
for check out. The addition of this
equipment will improve the safety
and ergonomics of our bright stacking
operation.
As we continue on our journey towards “Pack
2008”, I hope you are enjoying our beautiful
Indiana spring as much as I am,
and I hope to see you at the Red Gold
family picnic in June.
A new and exciting feature has been added to the Red Gold
website. In addition to viewing hundreds of recipes, you can
now watch videos of the following: Fresh Tomato Basil Pizza
and Italian Fiesta Dip being prepared by our demonstrator, Jill
Ditmire. Simply go to www.RedGoldTomatoes.com and click on
the clock and it will take you directly to the Fresh Tomato Basil
Pizza video. Look for the video camera icon beside the ‘recipe
name’ on the ‘recipe search results page’ for future videos.
Each four minute video gives you an overview of the cooking steps. By watching the video and reading
the recipe, you will find that preparing each dish is very simple.
Future videos will be available to members of our Tomato Country Almanac and Recipe Exchange
Club. To become a member of the club, simply go to www.RedGoldTomatoes.com and click on the yellow
Almanac book. This link will take you to the welcome page, where you will enter your information.
Congratulations! Now you are a member and can take advantage of the many features club membership
provides. Share this great new feature with all your family and friends. Enjoy!
Warm, sunny days and the chance to have fun outdoors draw
Red Gold employees out of hibernation to enjoy the company
picnic. Delight in a fun filled day with your family and friends. Sit
back and soak in all the fun; children playing carnival games,
families planning their summer vacation at the Recreation Fair
and best of all, everyone partaking of the wonderful array of great
food. A new attraction coming to this year’s picnic is, “Silly
Safari Show”. This is a high energy and zany theatrical animal
performance. Children and volunteers join the animals on stage for games and fun activities. Mark your
calendar now: Calloway Park in Elwood, Sunday June 8, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM.
Be sure to bring your ticket to the event! They serve as your meal ticket and a chance to win a door prize.
This is a place where you can catch up (Get it?) on news, fun facts, and
items of interest about our products, people, and activities.
Peak Performance, Red Gold’s continuous improvement program, has yielded 185 kaizens to date!
That is a lot of hard work by our employees! Check out your local Peak Performance bulletin
boards for updates from other facilities as well as opportunities to learn more about
eliminating waste!
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of
May (observed in 2008 on May 26). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday
commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country.
The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a plant in the Solanaceae or nightshade family, as are its close cousins
tobacco, chili peppers, potato, and eggplant. The tomato is native to Central, South, and southern North America.
The specific name, lycopersicum, means “wolf-peach”.
Quarterly Definitions
An avoirdupois [av-er-duh-poiz] ounce (abbreviated av. oz, or oz.) is a unit of mass, equal to 1/16 avoirdupois pound
or 28.3495 grams. The United States is now the only nation that continues to use this unit. This is used to express net
weights for products made at Red Gold.
A fluid [floo-id] ounce (abbreviated fl oz, fl. oz. or oz. fl.) is a unit of volume in both the imperial and the U.S. customary
systems. This is used to express volume for juice products made at Red Gold.

A recent survey announced we are
all spending more time in front of
our TV’s. That did not surprise me one little bit.
Reminiscing seasoned managers tell me, as kids, they had
just three channels of entertainment choices. Today, with
cables and dishes, there seems to be about a million channels.
With so many options…no wonder we’re all getting hooked
on TV!
So, what is this reporter hooked on? Between you and
me…my TiVo recordings are full of the new game and reality
TV shows. I find I plan my very active social life scheduled
around the special sweeps-week $20 million “Deal or
No Deals” or “The Housewives of New York City” (oh, they
are so spoiled). I’ve been hooked on several riveting shows,
traded my expert theories with friends and co-workers (during
water cooler breaks only, of course), and have become the
“go to” mater when the producers leave my fellow viewers
confused. So, I can’t tell you how many of my “peeps” have
said “Stew, you need to apply and get your little lycopene
storage unit onto one of these shows”!! I often wonder
which one would be best for me?
“Deal or No Deal” is an option. Host Howie’s head is not
unlike my own (pretty smooth and shiny). I think after the
initial shock of their shortness, Howie would like Mama,
Papa, and Nanna Mater as my on-show support advisors. I
definitely know how to play the game. One risk is Papa
Mater would likely wander off to mingle with Howie’s models
and that would interrupt the show. I’m also concerned
that when I was ready to “take the Deal”, my jumping six
ounce body (sometimes eight ounces when I’m bloated) may
not be heavy enough to depress the “Deal buzzer”.
“Survivor” is one of my favorite reality shows. With my athleticism
and wittiness, I thought that I could really enjoy
being on that show. But, I’ve noticed recently contestants on
that show don’t get fed very often. And, being a member of
an important food group, my squatty torso may look quite
flavorful to a starving survivor. “Are You Smarter Than a
Fifth Grader” is a fun game show, but just not right for me.
I don’t find being one upped by a gum chewing, backpack
toting 11-year old, regarding a US Constitution fact, to be a
positive life experience.
“Dancing With The Stars” would probably appreciate my
ability to shake my tiny, yet bulbous, booty. Or, if
“American Idol” wouldn’t mind me crooning my singing
audition from my shower, I know I would definitely be
headed to Hollywood. But, those judges with the strange
foreign accents can really be mean sometimes when you trip
over your goofy feet doing the mambo or get a little pitchy
when you’re singing on Tanya Tucker night.
Now the one reality series that would be right up my alley is
“The Bachelor”. How could you go wrong being surrounded
by 25 lovely contestants that spend every waking moment
trying to impress ol’ Stewie. And, I’ve had some practice.
Plus the show sends you on great dates via limousines. The
downside might be how an armless bachelor will present a
rose to my favorite lady friends at the end of each show. But,
if that’s the biggest obstacle…where’s the application?? The
show’s ratings will go through the roof!!
See you next time.
If you drive a vehicle, then you’re aware of semi trucks. If you are a Red Gold’er, you know the
feeling of pride and excitement when you see our brightly colored trucks cruising down the road. But,
did you know that nearly everything we eat, drink, wear, use, build, consume…literally all of our goods
are delivered by semi trucks? We recently had the opportunity to speak with one of our Over-The-
Road (OTR) drivers, Chris Welborn, to give us a little perspective on what it’s like to be a part of the
delivery system our country relies on.
Chris has been driving for RG Transport for a little over five years. So, what is an OTR driver? These
are the people who pretty much drive all over the country to deliver Red Gold products, as well as
pick up any needed material we use in our manufacturing facilities. Chris drives to the Northeast,
Midwest, South, and Southeast regions of the USA. Covering such a wide territory, it is no surprise
that drivers like Chris average about 2,500 miles each week! That’s 125,000 miles per year!
Their trucks hold about 300 gallons of fuel, and with diesel fuel prices being more expensive than
regular gas, well, you can do the math on what it costs to “fill ‘er up” these days. Chris usually leaves
to begin his work week on Sunday night, or Monday morning, and returns Friday or sometimes
Saturday morning. A delivery or a pick up takes about two to three hours to load or unload. This, of
course, is dependent on the staff within the various shipping and receiving departments. Chris hopes
they are running on time and are aware of a driver’s strict schedule. Other than loading and unloading
time, the rest of the hours throughout the week are spent in the truck.
The trucks are designed to make the driver’s time spent in them as enjoyable as possible. Each OTR
truck has a sleeper berth, otherwise known as a bunk, for the driver to relax in when taking a break
from the road. Chris’s truck has a bed about the size of a twin bed, with a computer table for his
laptop. There’s also a small closet to keep personal items in, such as clothes. Several drivers keep
mini refrigerators or TVs (some even with satellite!) in their bunk, where others, such as Chris, bring
along their hobbies. Chris keeps a guitar amp in his bunk so that he can practice his guitar when he
has time to relax.
If you’ve driven through a truck stop recently, you noticed many trucks are sitting there running, or
idling. The truck engines must run to keep the batteries charged and to power the air conditioner or
the heaters while the drivers are sleeping inside them. With the increased awareness and concern
for the environment, many states have started enforcing “No Idling” laws. In these states, the driver
is forced to turn off their truck. That may be easier said than done, especially if you’re trying to sleep
when it’s 10 degrees below zero outside! New York is a state known to be really cracking down on
idling trucks, and Indiana is apparently not too far behind. Luckily, all of our trucks have auxiliary
power units (APUs) that can power everything and burn just a fraction of the fuel. Most states seem
to be more understanding when the drivers use APUs.
One of the most difficult things for drivers, such as Chris, is to be away from their families throughout
the week. Laptops and cell phones make this a little more tolerable. As with any job, there are several
pros and cons about the profession. Understandably, one thing Chris and many other drivers
would like people to be aware of is how important it is for everyone to drive safely, especially when
sharing the roads around semi trucks. To put it in perspective, it takes approximately two football
fields to stop a semi truck when it is traveling at 55 miles per hour. With such a scary bit of info, it
makes sense that Chris always drives defensively.
So, what’s Chris’s favorite part of the job? He enjoys the freedom involved with driving. Like everyone,
drivers have supervisors and SOPs to follow…but when they pick up a load, how that product
gets to where it’s going is totally dependent on them. Chris likes working for RG Transport and Red
Gold because of the people. Besides treating the drivers so well, it’s the fellow employees here that
make Chris like his job. Drivers interact with several departments and get to know everyone at our
companies. Drivers appreciate it when “the people in the office understand what you go through”.
We all can relate to the frustration involved with being stuck in traffic for hours. If that’s your everyday
job, it’s extremely comforting to know that people back at the home office really care.
What do you think is one of the most frequently asked questions
our consumer relations representatives hear every day? If you
guessed, “Where can I find (insert one of our brands of tomato
product)?”, then you would be right! Literally, hundreds of loyal
Red Gold consumers are retiring each month and move to an area
where they can’t find their favorite tomato products, hence the
phone calls. We spend quite a bit of time cross-referencing their
zip code with stores in their area or a nearby area, to help them
find Red Gold products or even some of our private label brands.
On May 15, we were able to give them something more than a list
of stores. Simply go to www.redgold.com which will take you to
the main page of our website. To the far top right you will see
the “Shop Online” link. When you click this link, a drop down
box will appear with a list of our brands, Red Gold, Redpack,
The sights, smells and sounds of spring are engulfing our senses again and
none too soon! Spring satisfies that part of us that enjoys getting started
in our gardens, watching the spring daffodils pop up and seeing grandkids
picking dandelions, hoping to delight the object of their affection. That same
gleam is seen in the eyes of farmers in general, but particularly for Red
Gold growers. There is something special about actually placing a live plant
in the ground and immediately seeing the fruits of your labor, instead of
waiting for germination and the first shoot to appear.
This yearly ritual is a massive undertaking. It starts in greenhouses, back
when snow is still on the ground and water pipes are not safe from winter’s
grasp. Then the field equipment must be ready to go, much like the race
cars waiting for those famous orders to “start their engines”, another
Indiana tradition. This year, the beginning of planting has started almost
exactly on the target date as our first plants actually hit the ground on April
21st, bathed in sunshine and mid-70° temperatures, a wonderful way to
begin. Each plant is scheduled to mature at the right time to fulfill an important
time slot during harvest. Staying on our planting schedule is very
important to help ensure an orderly harvest season. This is always challenging
for all of our growers, as the spring weather in the Midwest sometimes
alters our best plans.
Our greenhouses are shipping out finished plants and yet, they are still
seeding the last ones that will be planted in June. Over 600 dedicated workers
are ready to handle nearly 150,000,000 tomato plants. Tractors are
preparing the fields and the rest…….well, we’ll just have to wait and see
what comes our way... but the Agriculture team is ready for 2008.
Tuttorosso and Sacramento. Select your favorite brand and you
will be taken to the Shop Online welcome page. Click on the
products icon and a list
of available products will
appear. Make your choice
and then follow the steps
to check out. The product
will arrive at your home
in a matter of days. This
new website option is
going to make a whole
bunch of folks in Arizona
happy.

Forget spring colors! Pedometers are the latest fashion must-have at Red Gold.
Two new health programs are helping us improve our fitness levels.
One resource is our newest E3 Team, the Health and Wellness Team. This group
includes members from every facility. Even though their formal goals and objectives
are still being set, team members have organized our participation in
InShape Indiana’s Ready, Set, Walk! program and the Corporate office’s participation
in Anthem’s National Walk@Lunch Day. Keep an eye on the E3 boards for
updates from the team.
Another resource is InShape Indiana, which Red Gold helps sponsor. Many
employees took part in InShape Indiana’s 10 in 10 program earlier this year, which
encouraged Hoosiers to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks. This motivated many of us
to start our fitness efforts. Now the InShape’s Ready, Set, Walk! program is helping
us build on our successes.
Red Gold’s Engineering Department was one of our top 10 in 10 success stories.
Department members Mike Herrmann, Dallas Conrad, Tom Cain, Jim Keidel, Beth
Wilson, Shane Wingler and Mark Stiner decided that each Friday they would
begin their department staff meeting with a quick weigh-in. Each loss was celebrated
with a brief staff cheer of enthusiasm and encouragement. The department’s
“Biggest Loser” was Mike Herrmann, who lost 27 pounds. Jim Keidel lost
19.4 lbs. and Tom Cain lost 25.2 pounds, which put them in third and second
place. When the Ready, Set, Walk! program was announced, the Engineering
Department was ready to take part. “We are going to begin another ‘off the record’
5 or 10 week weight loss challenge for those of us that didn’t do as well the first
time around,” Beth noted. Increased fitness has not been the only benefit. “This
is great for department camaraderie, the competitiveness in us, and just for the
health of it,” she added.
Engineering staffers are not the only ones to increase their fitness. Don Hunt, a
forklift operator at RG DC, has lost 72 pounds over the past year though a walking
program.
Jason Owens, RG Corporate, has graduated beyond fitness walking; he ran the
Indy Mini on May 3rd, and will also be running in the Chicago Marathon in
October.
Michelle Jent, in RG Corporate, said she began walking at lunch recently and
shared some of her tips for getting more from a fitness routine. “In late 2006, I got
serious about exercising and changing my eating habits. I found the
(www.sparkpeople.com) website and it made the process so much easier,”
Michelle explained. The site has a nutrition tracker, fitness tracker, planner, and
articles with an exercise of the day. One aspect of the website she enjoys is the
nutrition tracker, where users set up meal plans based on their goals. “You can
plan your menu for a week or more at a time and create a grocery list,” Michelle
added.
Jack White, in RG Orestes, began a health and fitness plan last year that is really
paying off. He has lost more than 30 pounds by reducing his intake of
processed sugar and calories, and exercising. He cut calories by reducing his
portion sizes. He also set some intensive exercise goals. His first goal was 20
minutes on the treadmill per day, his second goal was to average at least two
miles; Jack’s future goal is to burn at least 300 calories each session. “If I get to
goal three it means I am running about 2.5 miles in under 22 minutes, including a
2 minute warm up walk.” he explained. Jack said he feels much better and
believes he has a more positive outlook for a healthier life. “I feel like I can avoid
some of the health issues other members of my family have because they did not
react early enough in their lives,” he said. He weighs himself each evening, and
shares his results to encourage others. To keep on track and not get discouraged
with his program, he allows himself some slack on the weekends. “Try to keep the
whole life change in perspective”, Jack advises. “I am lucky because I have help
from family and God.”
Everyone wants to save money and many people have
a passion to be “green” and save energy. Red Gold
wants both!
When we starting examining our electricity bill, especially
for our nearly 1,000,000 square foot Distribution
Center, saving money and saving energy were two big
motivators for change. Lighting accounts for 25 to 40%
of a building’s total energy consumption and up to half
of its monthly electric bill. But of course, we didn’t
want to sacrifice lighting quality.
With the help of Westinghouse Lighting Solutions and
4TC Corporation, we replaced our 485-watt metalhalide
lights with 197-watt, four tube, high-bay T5 high
output fluorescents. The 680 new lights use 50% less
wattage, cutting our energy use by a third! Not only
that, the distribution of light is more even now, allowing
employees to see better in the warehouse. This
lighting project was just one piece of our corporate
sustainability goal.
Red Gold was recently awarded “The Green Tint”
award from the Indiana Governor’s Council for its
environmental efforts. Pictured below are Jay
Goodman from Westinghouse Lighting, presenting the
award to Mike Herrmann, Dallas Conrad, Tom Cain
and Beth Wilson, all from RG Engineering.

through inspection. RGT, along with the Department of
Transportation, empower their professional drivers to
remove equipment from service when it is deemed
unsafe. Defect-free is the only acceptable way to run our
equipment on America’s highways.
RGT’s safest and most productive drivers were also
recognized at the meeting, receiving the Driver of the
Month Awards. The January 2008 winner was owner
operator Randy Holliday. Delon Rumfelt was awarded
the February 2008 prize. The Driver of the Month for
March 2008 was two-time winner, Greg Davis. The drivers
were selected for their leadership in operational categories,
excellent safety performance and their high level
of customer service.
LASIK eye surgery — short for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis
— has resulted in making clear vision a reality for
millions of people who used to rely on glasses or contact
lenses. With increasing experience and advances in technology,
outcomes and predictability of LASIK eye surgery have
greatly improved in recent years, but complications associated
with LASIK eye surgery still exist. Before you schedule
LASIK eye surgery, find out what it entails and what could
go wrong.
How does LASIK eye surgery work?
LASIK eye surgery changes the shape of your cornea — the
transparent membrane that arcs over your pupil and the colored
part of your eye (iris). After the procedure, your cornea
should bend (refract) light rays to focus more precisely on
your retina rather than at some point beyond or short of your
retina. LASIK eye surgery may be an option for you if you
have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.
What might disqualify you from having LASIK eye
surgery?
LASIK eye surgery poses particular risks for some people.
You should definitely not have this surgery if you have: an
immune system disease, persistent dry eyes, uneven
corneal surface or abnormally shaped cornea, fluctuating or
progressively worsening vision. There are additional factors
such as deep-set eyes that may make the surgery difficult
and risky.
How is LASIK eye surgery done?
LASIK is performed using a laser programmed to remove a
defined amount of tissue from your cornea. With each pulse
of the laser beam, a tiny amount of corneal tissue is
removed. The laser allows your eye surgeon to flatten the
curve of your cornea or make it steeper. Often, LASIK is
performed on both eyes on the same day.
After surgery
Immediately after surgery, your eye may burn or itch and be
watery. You’ll probably have blurred vision. You may be given
pain medication or eye drops to keep you comfortable for
several hours after the procedure.Your eye doctor might also
ask you to wear a shield over your eye at night until your
eye heals.
Typically you’re able to see the day of your surgery, but your
vision won’t necessarily be better right away. Expect your
vision to improve over the next two to three months. Most
people who have refractive surgery eventually attain 20/25 or
better vision. Your chances for improved vision are based, in
part, on how good your vision was before surgery.
Risks
As with any surgery, refractive surgery carries risks,
including:
Under-correction, Over-corrections, Astigmatism, Glare
halos and double vision, Dry eyes or Flap problems
If you’re considering LASIK eye surgery, talk to your doctor
about your questions and concerns. He or she can explain
how the surgery might benefit you and help put the risks in
perspective.
