Hope you
are all enjoying
one of the best
springs in recent years.
We had a glorious, warm
March and a dry, cold April, but
May has started off with nearly
perfect weather. It has not only been
pretty, but so many of our growers
have already had the chance to work
on their grain crops and are looking
forward to tomato planting.
On an especially warm day at the end
of March, our Corporate Red Gold
Ambassadors gave tours to Elwood
City Officials as well as to their own
families. In an hour and a half, 165
people toured our new home. The
Ambassadors did a great job of explaining
all of the changes and the
amenities and our community was very
supportive! We will be having another
open house near the end of June,
exclusively for our customers. 2012
happens to be our 70th anniversary,
so the customer open house event will
also celebrate a full seventy years of
producing premium tomato products.
Our Ambassadors will again lend a
hand with this event. They will have
had plenty of practice talking with the
public before they again present at the
Indiana State Fair.
Let’s hope and pray and keep our
fingers crossed for a terrific planting
and growing season. For those of you
taking a summer vacation, have fun,
be safe and come back rested and
ready for the 2012 Fresh Pack!
Sunshine, Sunshine and more Sunshine
Our greenhouses are lush with the green tint of young seedlings,
anxious to escape their plastic covers and hit the ground to kick off this
season’s crop. Florida-like weather has made for an uplifting beginning
to Spring at Red Gold and out on the farms. Field work is taking place
at a record pace and much of the country’s corn crop is getting planted
at the time of this writing. Ground conditions, in general, have been as
good as any, even though unbelievably, there are already some areas
that could use a little rain. We’re confident it will come at the right time
and the right amounts, as we begin this year’s tomato planting.
Our growers recently finished their spring Contract Meetings, where great educational information was given covering; crop protectants,
soil management recommendations, fertility and the increasing use of cover crops to improve soil conservation on our
farms. Our growers are getting ready to focus entirely on their weekly tomato planting schedules. Even when the sun shines and
temperatures are ideal, planting must be spread out, in order to have tomatoes be at their peak ripeness, at just the right time and
amounts. The temptation is always there to keep going and get the crop in the ground, but patience and discipline are required to
prepare for a successful season.
While Mother Nature is treating us right, there is still a threat on the horizon called Dicamba. Red Gold has been a leader in helping
to create and organize a new coalition called SOCC (Save Our Crops Coalition). Farmers, processors, landscape providers and
wine grape and vineyard growers have recognized the future threat of the widespread use of weed killers on newly developed corn
and soybean crops. They are dedicated to preventing crop injury due to the drifting of herbicides from their intended targets onto our
fields, other sensitive crops, and rural homes and gardens, causing plant injuries. The SOCC has led an effort to submit important
comments to the USDA, to help the regulators understand the risks to all traditional food crops, home gardens and landscapes. We
invite you to visit the website and learn more about the threats these products pose on our industry. www.saveourcrops.org
Did you know our production facilities are certified by the SQF Institute? Each year, the RG EL, OR and GE plants go through a certification audit
that covers Food Safety and Food Quality programs. All facilities have written plans to address possible food safety and food quality problems and
the audits verify those plans are sound and carried out correctly, based upon observations and documentation. As has occurred in the previous two
years, all three manufacturing plants received either a “Good” or “Excellent” rating on the SQF audit this year! According to the auditor, Red Gold’s
plants are in the top 4% of SQF certified plants and get closer to perfection each year. It is only with the commitment by all Red Gold employees,
including support departments, that this can occur and each of us should be proud to be part of such a great team!
Quarterly Definitions
SQF – Safe Quality Food Program established through the Food Marketing Institute
Food Safety Plan – Plan established by a manufacturing facility that addresses potential food safety hazards in the food, process,
or equipment used to make the food. Most commonly known as a HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) plan, this plan
categorizes possible hazards into physical, chemical and biological risks.
Food Quality Plan – Plan established by a manufacturing facility that addresses potential risks that may compromise food
quality in the food, process, or equipment used to make the food. Adopted as part of compliance to SQF Level 3, this plan addresses
items that would not meet the expectations of the consumer.

A TALE of TWO CITIES
Lucca, Tuscany, Italy, my grandfather’s hometown and
Elwood, Indiana (where I was born) produce signature
products that form the basis of Italian cuisine: tomatoes
and olive oil. This epiphany inspired me to create this
recipe: Pork Chops Cosmopolitan. Please know that
Red Gold has my highest endorsement and I always
rhapsodize about the quality of your products.
Pork Chops Cosmopolitan
Recipe Created by
Mike Micheli,
Lucca, Tuscany, Italy
MAKES 4 SERVINGS
4 tablespoons Filippo Berio
extra virgin olive oil, divided
½ cup dry red wine
1 (28 ounce) can Red Gold®
Petite Diced Tomatoes,
drained and mashed
4 center cup pork chops
1 teaspoon chopped garlic
1 large green bell pepper, cut in 2 by ¼ inch strips
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1½ cups fresh sliced mushrooms
¼ teaspoon dried thyme
In a heavy 12 inch skillet, heat 2 tablespoons oil. Brown
the chops in this oil for 4 or 5 minutes on each side and
transfer them to a plate. In the remaining fat and oil cook
the garlic, oregano and thyme for 30 seconds, stirring fre-
quently. Add the wine and boil briskly to reduce it to ¼
cup. Stir in Red Gold® Petite Diced Tomatoes and return
the chops to the skillet. Stir, cover and simmer over low
heat, basting occasionally, for 40 minutes. Meanwhile,
heat remaining oil in another large skillet. Cook peppers
for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the mushrooms,
toss them with the peppers for a minute or 2, and
then transfer them to the pan with the pork chops. Cover
and simmer for 15 minutes. To serve, arrange the chops
on a heated platter and spoon on the sauce.
BLOGGER WEEKEND
Red Gold offered a contest to over 100 bloggers
across the US. Each blogger was required to
enter as many posts as possible to their blogs,
talking about Red Gold and/or tomatoes. A panel
of judges selected the top seven bloggers and flew
them to Indiana for Super Bowl weekend. Upon
arrival at the airport, they were greeted by a team
of Red Gold employees who escorted them to their
hotel. The first night they were taken to dinner
at Bonge’s Tavern to meet and chat with each
other and the Red Gold Team. Saturday was a
busy day that started with breakfast at the Elwood
facility and then a tour of the factory. They then
took part in a cutting, showcasing the quality of our
various tomato products compared to our competi-
tion. A tour of the new corporate office came next,
followed by lunch in our café (made with Red Gold
products of course). The highlight of the event
Hey! Don’t throw that away!
Manners with
Who remembers the expression, “Waste not, want not?” Well, that
is present day living here at Red Gold. Did you know that we
recycle just about everything under the sun at each processing
facility and the corporate headquarters? Even
as we speak, there are projects in place to reuse and
repurpose materials used at Red Gold.
Recycling for the three processing facilities is
all documented. We’re not talking just a few bins
or boxes, here. Ever think “Gee, I wonder how
much of that we go through AND RECYCLE in a
year?” Many of the recycled materials are literally
recorded in the tons every year. Cardboard
bales, cardboard, plastic bales, and cap boxes are
all recycled. Also recycled: 55 gal steel drums, mixed
metal, tin cans, stainless steel, sheet iron, pressed film
cores, and chipped plastic bands… don’t forget light bulbs,
batteries, and used oil!
Some stuff isn’t just recycled, it’s also repurposed. Plastic bags
from the cap boxes are kept and reused as trash can liners. Plastic and
wooden paste totes are returned back to the vendor for reuse. Also, a large
quantity of rail dunnage is returned from forward warehouses to be reused.
The facilities are always reassessing how they can continue to save more
on corrugate, plastic, scrap cans, and other such recyclables.
The facilities also have ongoing projects for sustainability. At RG
Geneva, they are working on a project to fertilize fields by injection of
organic material removed from the lagoons. They’re continuing work on the
wetlands recovery and revitalization. Projects are in place to reduce the
noncontact water being used at the facility. Another current project
involves learning how to reduce waste water treatment costs
along with energy. They are also studying the forklift idle
shutoff system to reduce fuel consumption. From lighting
to paste usage, our facilities are always looking
for ways to save energy and reduce other wastes.
Have you ever noticed the trucks filled with seeds
Stewie
and peel during fresh pack? This is a byproduct of
our fresh tomatoes. Finding the best home for the
seeds and peel has been an ongoing project. The
material from Elwood, and half of Geneva’s, goes
to a local dairy farmer for sillage. Orestes’ material,
and the other half of Geneva’s, goes to a drier
operation that prepares the seed and peel for pet food!
Don’t forget these facilities have offices too. Paper, toner
cartridges, etc., is all recycled from there as well.
At the corporate headquarters, there are recycling stations
to make it easy for employees to recycle. There are two bins
for aluminum cans, one for glass, one for plastic, one for batteries, a box
for catalogs, a box for toner cartridges, and there are locations to stack
cardboard. They’ve thought of everything! At the corporate headquarters,
employees even take out their own trash. This helps keep everyone conscious
of what they throw away– you can either throw it in the trash, or
throw it in the recycling! The trash and recycling stations are in the same
room. This is a no-brainer!
It’s amazing how big of a difference all these little things make… even
YOUR one pop can!
Summertime Tomatoes All Year Long
Five NEW Red Gold Trailers have arrived with dramatic and playful new graphics. The graphics
feature a summertime theme to reinforce the marketing campaign message that with Red Gold
Tomatoes consumers can have “Summertime Tomatoes All Year Long TM”. The ‘Summertime
Campaign’ was first introduced with radio advertising in Kansas City and Oklahoma City markets
two years ago. As a result, we have significantly grown volume, market share and strengthened
our relationship with the AWG (Associated Wholesale Grocers) stores located in Kansas City:
Apple Markets, Hen House and Price Choppers; Oklahoma: United Supermarkets, Homeland
and Apple Markets.
YMCA
Red Gold has been a longtime supporter of the YMCA. Recently, the company donated funding
for the newly expanded and renovated Elwood YMCA Red Gold Fitness Center. “Red Gold has
had a long time commitment to the community, starting its tomato manufacturing business 70
years ago in 1942. The values and vision of the Elwood YMCA naturally align with the mission
of Red Gold to promote health and wellness to our employees and the community,” said Brian
Reichart, President and CEO.
Red Gold presented the newly renovated Elwood YMCA Red Gold Fitness Center with a ribbon
cutting presentation on March 22, 2012. In addition, the Elwood YMCA will have another day later
this spring season which will recognize other donors who also contributed to the renovations.

Making A Difference
So many of our employees are involved in the communities where they live…
we are fortunate to have wonderful people working at Red Gold who are also
volunteer firemen, coaches, PTA officers, involved with their church or some other
very interesting and helpful endeavors. Here are a few Red Gold employees who
are “Making A Difference”!
Matt Andrew – DBA/Developer (CORP)
In the last couple of years I have become very involved in Alexandria. I have helped
coach baseball teams, travel baseball teams, and football teams, and sometimes
help out with teams that I don’t coach. I am a member of the board for Alexandria
Baseball & Softball, working very hard to make our baseball diamonds look better
and help improve baseball & softball for the kids of Alexandria.
Michelle Jent – General Accounting Supervisor, Finance Dept. (CORP)
Muncie Mission Ministries: My children and I have volunteered to deliver either
Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners provided by the Mission to peoples’ homes for
more than five years. ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ fundraiser: Over 2000 people
including children walked a mile in the month of February raising over $60,000. The
idea is to experience the conditions a homeless person endures during this time of
the year.
Habitat for Humanity: It’s been many years since I’ve helped with building a house,
but this year Habitat has a Women’s build. An entire house is being built by volunteer
women of the community. Teams of five women with a goal of raising $1000 participate
on different weekends from April through May. My team of women also includes
another Red Gold employee, Melanie Quinton. We are excited to swing a hammer
or do whatever we can. Muncie-Delaware Clean and Beautiful: community cleanups
are the main focus. Other projects include planting memorial trees and adopt
a median. The White River Clean-up is an annual event bringing together over 400
volunteers to walk or canoe, all the while, picking up trash. It’s organized to cover the
length of the river with-in Delaware County. They have partnered with Urban Garden
Initiatives (UGI) to create more community gardens of either produce or plant life.
I have been the Treasurer for over a year.
Karen Tunis – Executive Assistant to the Director of QA & Product Development (CORP)
St. Joseph Catholic Church, Elwood: Religious Education Instructor – 22 years CCD
program (7th and 8th grade) and 4 years RCIA Coordinator (program for adults joining
the Catholic faith). It has been several years since I was involved with the Oakland
School PTA (9 years), PTA President, Room Mother and one year as a member of the
Madison County Child Sexual Abuse Task Force.
REMEMBERING
As Memorial Day approaches, we want to remember
all of our veterans, active and inactive, that
have defended our country for the sake of freedom.
We are especially proud of our employees
who served in the military and want to thank them
for their service.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration
Day, and began after the Civil War to commemorate
the fallen soldiers. By the 20th Century, it
became a day to remember all Americans who
had died in a war. An early tradition that has since
almost faded, was to wear a red poppy on this day
as a tribute to those who had died serving in a war.
The original date of Decoration Day was May
30 but was changed to the last Monday in May,
making it a three day holiday. The name Memorial
Day replaced its original title, and since then,
Americans have celebrated this holiday with
parades, picnics and the Indy 500, to honor the departed
soldiers who gave their life for our freedom.
COMPLIMENT
I just wanted to send you a quick note to tell you how much I am LOVING the “Culinary
Classics” line of tomatoes, We especially love the Chipotle and have starting using it in
all kinds of places we would normal use “regular” tomatoes like stuffed peppers, beef
stew, chili (of course), pot roast, minestrone, you name it! I now have to have at least
4 cans of it in my pantry at all times or I start to panic.
Just wanted to say thanks for always trying new flavors. It is so great to have the
chipotle flavor (and the heat) without having to purchase the chipotles, dice them up,
save the remainder or the can, etc. I sent my mom home with 3 cans over Christmas
break and just recently mailed some to my sister in Wisconsin for husband to try. So
thanks for making my usual recipes taste incredible!
Be Pro-Active
When we are young, most of us don’t even think about preventative health
care, but it is something that we need to make an important part of all our
lives. In this busy world we live in, we can easily forget to make those
annual visits to the doctor. Did you know, starting in July, now plan A and
B along with the HRA plan covers 100% of some preventative health care?
Get the details on exactly what is covered from RGi or your local HR
departments.
Below are some tips on how you can take charge of your health care;
• Get your FREE, Money Saving, Red Gold Health Assessment this
June. See RGi and your local bulletin boards for more information on
dates and times.
• Don’t wait! Sometimes you may be able to tell if something is wrong;
don’t wait until things get out of hand before you see your doctor.
• Be informed. You can use the internet to get more information. Good
sites to visit are; www.webmd.com, www.mayoclinic.com
• Be prepared. Bring past medical records to a new doctor whenever
possible.
• Ask questions, questions, and more questions. Below is one
example of some questions you may want to ask your doctor about your
medicine;
• Ask the name of the medicine, how it works, when and how long
to take it, what foods and drinks to avoid, what side effects are possible
and if there are ways to deal with those side effects, how to know when
the medicine is working or not working, and whether interactions are
possible with other prescription or non-prescription drugs.
Take care of yourself NOW,
not tomorrow or next week!
VACATION
We are officially entering
the vacation season. Here’s
a quick checklist of things
you should do to prepare
yourself, your boss and your
co-workers.
• Decide now if you’re going to do any work while
you’re on vacation. If you’re going to be available
in certain situations, you have to make sure
your lines of communication are open. Create a
plan now, so there is no confusion.
• Try to bring all open projects to a conclusion.
This will make it easier for your co-workers; they
will not be waiting on your return to move things
forward.
• Clean your desk; everything must go! Answer
all outstanding voicemails. Clear out your email
inbox. This will make it easier to hit the ground
running when you come back.
• Right now, before you leave, make a to-do list
of things you might need to tackle when you get
back. Don’t rely on your memory after a week at
the beach!
• Set your email to ‘Out-of-Office’. If someone is
covering for you, make sure all of your usual
contacts know who this person is and how they
can be contacted.
• Change your phone message to say that you
are ‘Out-of-Office’ and who to contact in your
absence.
