Ukrainians perform for students
at international celebration in Detroit
DETROIT – Billing the event as
“America’s largest International celebration,”
a Boston based organizing committee
chose Detroit to offer a unique
opportunity for tens of thousands of students
to view expressions of various cultures.
The festival presentation was tailored
for middle school and high school students.
Approximately 10,000 students
attend this function each day to learn
about the cultural diversity of the world.
For this academic year, on November 13-
15, 2001, over 1,200 musicians, dancers,
singing groups and other performers dazzled
and delighted audiences on the
exposition’s four massive stages. Dozens
of countries showcased their respective
cultures through exhibits and ethnic
activities each day.
The Ukrainian Village’s song ensemble
from Warren, Mich., called Zoloti
Dzvony (Golden Bells) was invited to
provide Ukrainian Entertainment.
Established approximately seven years
Jack Palance...
(Continued from page 1)
president of the new body added,
“Ukrainians have played important roles
in the film industry since its inception.
We hope that the Hollywood Trident
Foundation will not only encourage those
working in the industry, but also demonstrate
and teach an international audience
about Ukrainians and their contributions
– past and present – to the art and business
of film and media worldwide.”
In addition to Messrs. Palance and
Borisow, the foundation’s articles of
incorporation were also signed by Luba
Keske, senior vice-president – administration,
business affairs at MGM
Pictures; Jim Makichuk, Hollywood
director and screenwriter who also
teaches part time at UCLA; and Los
Angeles attorney Andriy Semotiuk, who
will act as executive director of the
body.
The articles of incorporation are now
being registered with the California
Department of State and, following registration,
will serve as the basis for
obtaining IRS Section 501 (c) (3) charitable
status to enable the foundation to
issue tax-deductible receipts to future
donors.
Initial discussions envision a board of
directors consisting of nine people, five
of whom will come from the Los Angeles
area. The new foundation hopes to attract
Losten says...
(Continued from page 3)
Almost all of the money came from
the Ukrainian immigrants of the World
War II period, most of whom were political
refugees and intellectuals fiercely
devoted to Ukraine and the Greek-
Catholic Church. That generation is now
well into its senior years, and is allocating
its funds towards medical and caretaking
needs.
“It’s time that our people in Ukraine
assumed full responsibility for their
parochial life,” Bishop Losten said.
However, the Church’s efforts must focus
on Ukraine’s youth, he added, and
Ukrainian American contributions will
take a social form.
Such social work will include educating
Ukrainians about concepts like stewardship
and charity, and organizing such
efforts. For example, Bishop Losten said
ago, this colorful ensemble under the
direction of Olga Dubriwny Solovey, has
a distinguished repertoire with an unusual
track record of appearances in
Metropolitan Detroit. A Ukrainian cultural
exhibit booth was expertly assembled
through the efforts of Branch 81 of the
Ukrainian National Women’s League of
America. Leadership and expertise were
provided by Olena Papiz and Stefania
Dub, who were assisted by other
UNWLA members.
In addition, a cultural discussion group
was featured at the Cultural Mall.
Stephen Wichar and Ms. Dub were given
an opportunity to discuss the traditions,
culture and history of Ukraine through
questions by participating students.
Both the Ukrainian exhibit and choral
performances were executed skillfully
and with gratifying enthusiasm. It is not
often that tens of thousands of youngsters
are exposed to the many rich heritages
that are representative of a dynamic city
like Detroit.
board members from some of the other
major foundations and institutions in the
Ukrainian community in North America,
and also hopes to include three honorary
members nominated from the Producers
Guild of Ukraine. Board members will be
expected to be active and serve a threeyear
term.
Foundation members have had preliminary
discussions with faculty and administration
officials at UCLA and said they
are encouraged by the prospect of undertaking
some film-related projects in conjunction
with the Ukrainian students’
club there.
Mark Semotiuk, president of the
UCLA Ukrainian Students’ Club, has
asked the Ukrainian community at large
to contact any Ukrainian students currently
at UCLA, or other colleges in the
Los Angeles vicinity, and ask them to get
in touch with him. He may be reached by
email at msemotiu@ucla.edu or through
the Hollywood Trident Network, c/o
The Hollywood Trident Foundation
will work closely with both the
Hollywood Trident Network and the
Ukrainian Student’s Club at UCLA. While
the network will continue to attract entertainment-related
individuals for networking
purposes, the students club will seek
to bring together Ukrainian students in the
Los Angeles area.
he sees a dire need for Ukraine’s
Catholics to reach out to the country’s
poorest people. The Basilian sisters’ goal
of creating an orphanage for 60 girls is a
perfect example of the types of projects
Americans are considering.
In just 10 years, the relationship
between Ukrainian Catholics and their
American counterparts has come full circle,
Bishop Losten said. Instead of sending
materials east, the Ukrainian Catholic
Church in the United States is now buying
religious items from Ukraine, where
Catholic factories and publishing houses
are operating. “We can buy cheaper over
there than we can buy it here because of
the high cost of living,” he said. “And
they do good work over there.”
However, though the Church today is
standing on its own two feet, Ukrainian
Catholics in the United States still have
an important role, as Cardinal Husar said:
“Their function of representing Ukraine
in the West is not finished.”
