ConclusionWater funds that are fully launched and operational (a total of 7) in the Northern Andes serve over 11 million people andare working to conserve over 1.6 million hectares of watershed. Adding water funds under development (6, for a total of13), these numbers grow to almost 15 million people and 2.5 million hectares. Water funds have engaged new stakeholdersin conservation efforts, invested in environmental education for both rural and urban children, conserved some of the mostdiverse ecosystems in the region, and created a model for financially sustainable conservation.Further replication and leverage will require institutional, financial, and biophysical assessments, but current replicationin the Northern Andes across different regions, geographies, and countries demonstrates that these are not insurmountableobstacles. One remaining challenge is accountability, that is, putting in place monitoring that assesses whetherexpectations are met and if water funds deliver both biodiversity conservation benefits and important water-relatedecosystem services.Photo Credits: Cover: Ami Vitale, Back of cover: © Mark Godfrey, Page 1: © Gregory Miller, Page 2: © Diego Ochoa, Page 3: © Bridget Besaw,Page 6 (top to bottom): © Diego Ochoa, © Bridget Besaw, Page 7: © Rebecca Goldman, Page 8: © Rebecca Goldman, Page 9: © RebeccaGoldman, Page 10: © Rebecca Goldman, Page 11: © Bridget Besaw, Page 12: © Josh Thomas.12 Water funds: Protecting Watersheds for Nature and People
