Vote 1
Dave Burgess
Mayor
I am married with two sons and have been a permanent
resident of the Mid Murray District for 25 years.
I have owned my own business over the past 30 years
I have enjoyed being a councillor for Mid Murray over
the past 7½ years, the last 4 as Deputy Mayor.
I believe we need to guide our growth within our region
to develop a base for future business and managed
tourism. We need to find a balance by providing the
needs of the community whilst still protecting our
environment.
Your vote for me will ensure
strong leadership necessary
for the Mid Murray Council to
achieve these goals.
RIVER NORTH WARD
As a resident of Cadell I have represented River North
Ward as a Councilor for the past four years. During this
period I have served on the Strategic Planning committee
and Reserves Management Working group and have seen a
positive change.
If re-elected I will continue to support the ongoing projects
in River North that benefit our youth and senior citizens. I
am committed to provide facilities to our region that are
normal in larger towns and this in turn will help local
business prosper. The river and tourism are very
important to our region and so are the many community
groups that keep our towns alive. We have seen positive
changes in recent times, some of which are upgrades to
the Morgan Internet centre and the Cadell Institute,
Re-roofing of Landseer building and funding for a new
Playground and BMX track. We have also seen the
introduction of the Morgan/Cadell community car, a
medical transport service that is run by volunteers and
council. The re-development of the Morgan riverfront is a
very exciting project and is one that I am proud to be part
of and will continue to support this if re-elected.
Make your vote count and we
will keep moving forward
Nomination for Mid Murray Council Elections Vote 1 BOB PETERS
Being a retired Police officer I have served on many community committees. I have had a
shack at Brenda Park since 1981 and since then have been involved at committee level,
including president, of the management committee of that area. I was a committee member
of the Murray Valley Holiday Homes Association which lobbied both State and Local
Government enabling improvements to be made in shack areas on the flood plain. I have
been a shack representative on the Waste management and the STEDS maintenance
committees of the Mid Murray Council for a number of years as well as the committee of the
BPSC Wetlands Group. Interested in all aspects of life along the River, I am acutely aware
of the issues needed to maintain and improve community facilities as well as those of
particular importance to shack areas. I look forward to representing you.
TIME TO HAVE A SAY
Councillors are responsible for many millions of dollars on infrastructure and
essential services each year, but the great power bestowed on them can come
back to just a few voters.
At the last two council elections, less than one in three eligiblevoters used their power to
influence the shape of the local council.
Use your democratic right to take part in the voting process
andhave an input into the management of your local community.
If you voted in the recent federal election you are eligible to
vote in your council election.
Voting is how we influence what happens at a local level.
While our council consults local communities
before making key decisions, ultimately elected
councillors are responsible for spending on
roads, parks, stormwater drains, local road
maintenance, libraries and parks.
Individual councillors, who you vote for during the election
period, exercise their power to influence these and other
community issues by voting at council meetings.
You can find out more about each candidate
for our River North Ward on the LGA website.
www.lgcandidates.sa.gov.au
However, Those wanting to find out more about each
candidate use the details to contact each individually,
you will find each very welcoming about their view to our
communities future direction of our community.
Although it is not compulsory to vote these local elections
have a huge impact locally.
DESIGNER APPOINTED FOR MORGAN RIVERFRONT
PRECINCT PROJECT
11
For the past few months, the Mid Murray Council has been working in association with the Morgan Community
Development and Tourism Association to commence preliminary planning for the Morgan Riverfront Precinct
Project.
A successful ‘Places for People’ grant confirmed the first stage of the project to appoint a designer to formulate
an overall development concept/ master plan for the Morgan Riverfront Precinct.
A series of workshops were conducted with the Morgan Community to ascertain your thoughts, ideas and vision
for the future of the precinct and a steering committee was formed to appoint a designer to deliver the final
master plan.
The Morgan Riverfront Steering Committee has appointed Hilary Hamnett and Associates as the design
company to formulate a design master plan for the Morgan Riverfront Precinct.
As the project leader for Hilary Hamnett & Associates, and on behalf of our team, “I am delighted that we have
been selected to work with the Morgan community on the Riverfront Precinct improvements. Morgan holds a
unique place in South Australia’s history, especially in the economy of the state during the evolution of rail and
river transport. We hope to add a new page to the history of Morgan by ensuring that the riverfront precinct
remains an enjoyable and relevant place for the use of residents and visitors alike.
The team consists of:
Hilary Hamnett Martin Corbin Richard Wood
landscape architect artist heritage architect
Although we each have our own individual practices working in our
specific areas of expertise we enjoy coming together for special
projects such as the Morgan Riverfront precinct.
Some of you will already have met Martin as he is working on the
entrance signage for Cadell. If so, you will be aware of his ability
to inspire individuals and groups to express the unique qualities of
their town and community through integrated artworks such as the
entrance signs. Hilary and Martin worked together on the
Willaston Babies memorial which has already become a special
place for many people.
The bronze teddy is a particularly symbolic element of the
Willaston project.
Richard works as an architect in both heritage and contemporary
fields of architecture, bringing a fresh approach to each project
while maintaining a sensitive perspective on aspects of context
and heritage. We have worked together in regional, remote and
coastal areas. He has won many awards for his work, including a
number for ‘site specific’ toilet facilities such as the Christies Beach
‘surf board’ toilet.
Hilary specialises in landscape design and site planning. As well
as managing the project she will, with the help of the whole team,
make sure that the precinct ‘works’, that it is easy to understand
and use the various parts of the riverfront, that it is accessible for
people of all ages and abilities and that conflicting uses are separated.
As a team we hope to ensure that visitors return over and over again, each time to discover something different,
new, inspiring or enthralling about Morgan.”
PS MARION HOMEWARD BOUND
The historic paddle steamer ‘Marion’ has been slipped, repaired and polished and
has made her way back to her home town of Mannum. How lucky was everyone to
be given the opportunity to spend time aboard this lovely old boat once again?
Those who joined her for a day or two on her voyage down river from Berri through to
Blanchetown had a wonderful trip and enjoyed the tales and stories from the very
knowledgeable Captain Trevor Bedford and his merry crew. Friday’s trip from Berri to
Loxton tested the Captain and his crew with the wind playing havoc on the boat
leaving Lock 4 but they seemed to enjoy the challenge. Although the weather was a
trifle cool for the remainder of the days, it was exhilarating to be on our beautiful river
and live a bit of history. Students from Morgan & Cadell Primary schools and
several others grabbed the chance to travel back in time and see first hand how hard
the firemen and engineers work to keep the steam up on these historic vessels.
On her arrival in Morgan on Monday evening Channel 7 came to
interview Peter Brazil-Smith and ‘The Wood Fairy’ Dave Prescott and
the PS Marion and Morgan received excellent coverage during
Friday’s news with views from the ground and overhead from the
helicopter. Volunteers of the Morgan Museum and supporters were
then treated to an evening cruise aboard the PS Marion by the Captain
and his crew. The Murray River was like glass and everyone was
thrilled to be aboard. Museum Chairman John Lindner presented
Captain Trevor Bedford with a rare bottle of Port of Morgan Port as a
memento and thank you to them all.
Peter Brazil-Smith was Engineer of the last Murray River cargo boat,
the PS “Murrabit”, and was onboard the PS Marion on her journey
back to Mannum. Peter who now resides in Victoria and in to his 80’s
was extremely excited to join the crew of the PS Marion to once again
cruise the Murray.
As the last Engineer on the PS “Murrabit” and a previous Engineer on
the PS Marion, Peter had many stories to tell of his escapades with
Murrabit Captain, John Weaver and their cargo trips from Morgan to
Mildura in the late 1940’s. Like the Marion, the Murrabit was a wood
fired steam-driven paddle steamer and Peter understands the extreme
hardships of operating a vessel of this nature.
On his last journey in 1951 Peter reflects, “it was near dusk and we
had a strong following wind out of Morgan which I could see looking
back was blowing a stream of sparks from the funnel ahead of the boat. This
was most spectacular, rather like a giant Roman candle (which was probably
some unburnt particles in the boiler). While I was taking all this in I suddenly
noticed one of the bags of chaff stacked at the front was on fire, it had obviously
caught alight from the funnel sparks. I immediately gave two short blasts on the
whistle to alert John of the situation and waited for him to run up to the bow and
douse the fire. There was no sign of John, so I gave a further two blasts on the
whistle and then I noticed that the fire was spreading and was getting close to
two 44 gallon drums. Still no sign of John, who I had not seen for half an hour or
more, and I thought hell! He must have fallen overboard!
I was just about to stop the engine and rushed down to the bow when John stuck his head
around and said “how are things going?” He immediately rushed down and grabbed two
buckets of water and soon the fire was out. Talking afterwards with John I realized that my
two short blasts on the whistle didn’t signify a fire on board and he thought I must be alerting
a small boat that was in our way”.
Our thanks once again to the following for their assistance and for offering Morgan the
opportunity to raise funds for the Morgan Riverfront Precinct Project with these day cruises.
The Mid Murray Council and Deb Alexander
The PS Marion’s very dedicated Board and
passionate band of merry volunteers.
The Mannum Dock Museum
The Morgan Museum
We hope to see the PS Marion return to Morgan soon and once again give the Morgan
Community and people upstream the chance to enjoy the experience travelling aboard this
historic paddle steamer.
SPIRITUAL HAPPENINGS AT THE LANDSEER
A sign of the times? Until now the Landseer
Museum has portrayed life as it was in early
Morgan and its hinterland with one significant
omission; the importance of religion and the
Churches to the communities of those times.
17
To sit and watch the DVD in the Museum of the
River and Morgan and it’s history, is to be
constantly reminded that to most it provided not
only a place to worship but also a place to meet
and greet, care and share and, in small out of
town communities, a place to teach.
From the Church the Pastor, Priest, Rector or
Minister went out to comfort, administer, teach and guide and sometimes argue. The Church was the centre of
great Family Occasions; marriages, baptisms, confirmations and funerals with the Congregation dressed appropriately.
Sunday was The Day of the Week when the
buggies and horses were lined up outside the Church and inside the Choir was in full voice accompanied by
the organ and the small children in Sunday School next door dutifully listening to Bible Stories or creating
Biblical artwork.
To correct the omission in the Landseer, a modest display has been created by the volunteers, including the
ever busy Shed Men. Its impetus was a set of brass gas lamps found stored in the roof loft of St. Peter’s
Anglican Church. These have been set into a replica of the wall and windows behind the altar at St. Peter’s.
The history of carbide lamps, which preceded electricity, is itself fascinating. This plus the building of the
church, with Mallyon, the son of the second licensee of Mallyon’s Public House at Weston Flat being its
architect, is also there to see. Also the Burial Records of the Morgan Cemetery. .
To complement the display, Keith and Betty
Munchenberg have lent a pedal organ.
(pictured right)
John Lindner, Chairman of the Museum Board
is hoping that the other Churches historic to
Morgan may wish to lend or donate memorabilia
of their times to be exhibited as well.
He can be contacted at 85402281.
Well here we are on the downhill run to the end of
another school year. As Term 4 begins, the students
have another action packed few weeks ahead of them.
Probably the highlight for this term is the school camps
the students are about to embark on. As you all read
this, the Reception, Year 1, Year 2 students will have
just arrived back from 2 nights in the Adelaide Hills. The
much anticipated Year 3-7 camp to Canberra begins on
Nov 8 th where they will spend 4 nights in Canberra.
Students will be flying and are very excited about their
upcoming adventure. I will report all the action from both
camps in the next issue!
PS MARION CRUISE
On the return voyage
home to Mannum, the
school students and
parents were invited to
board the PS Marion at
Cadell Reserve and
enjoy a lovely trip back
to Morgan. Whilst aboard this historic paddle steamer,
everyone enjoyed learning and viewing just how one of
these majestic boats operate and as we neared Morgan,
students were invited to have a steer of the boat. As we
approached M organ wharf area, we saw the Channel 7
helicopter land and they were filming our arrival and
even interviewed a couple of students about the trip. It
was a lovely cruise back to Morgan and everyone was
grateful for the opportunity to ride this beautiful boat.
YEAR 5/6/7 TECHNOLOGY PROJECT
In Term 3, this class had to choose a biscuit recipe and
then name it, design it, market it according to what age
group they were targeting, advertise it and last of all
make and sell them. The class made a total of $250-20
that will contribute towards their end of year party.
ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL SPORT
Again in Term 4, the Active After School Sport program
(AASS) is continuing. The last 2 sessions have been
gymnastics with Craig from the Waikerie Rec Centre.
He brings down a variety of mats, springboards etc and
designs a circuit of flips and rolls. This is always a
popular activity. We are eagerly awaiting the warm
weather to be able to get into some pool activities and
then finish off the year with a trip of Ten Pin Bowling in
Berri.
The Celebration lunch which grew!
Our Jan recently turned sixty years old. ( Can we believe it, she looks so young! )
It was planned that a few friends would get together at The Terminus for a lunch to celebrate Jan's milestone. 26
Over thirty friends arrived to honour a lovely person.
Jan's tears flowed as she read loving tributes from friends. A gift basket of goodies had Jan emotional but happy
as she displayed chocolates, and more chocolates ( does she like chocolate? ) A silver necklace, a scarf she
loved, a bottle or two of the good drop and chocolate candles she almost ate on the spot and lots more were revealed,
showing Jan's friends know her well.
John surprised her with a complete set of Bessemer Cookware. Jan's considerable cooking skills will know no
bounds now.
How we love her, straight down the middle, a dry sense of humour, a rapport and compassion for everyone and a
willingness to do anything for friends.
Enjoy the best decade of your life, Jan. We all love you.
Cadell Primary School
CWA England Day
Students, staff and members from the Cadell CWA joined together on
Wednesday 22nd September for England Day. Together they studied
different aspects of England and enjoyed an English meal which consisted of
bubble and squeak followed by a pastry called banberries.
We thank the CWA for their time spent with the students.
Dress Down Day
Staff and students dressed down as a fundraiser for Downs Syndrome Association
on Monday 13th
September. Some of us went for comfort in hug
boots and dressing gowns while others wore pyjamas' or tracksuits. A grand
total of $164.00 was raised. Many thanks to everyone for supporting this
worthwhile fundraiser.
Dale Elliott
On Thursday 2nd September we had a fantastic afternoon with Dale Elliott.
He spent time talking about his accident, his fundraising trip to Darwin and his
sky diving adventure.
Dale also worked with students and adults on looking at their own 'Road to
Success'. Areas we worked on were health, fitness, money, family fun, school
work, me time, friends and helping others.
Morgan Library Visit
Lisa Walker, Librarian from the Morgan Library visited our school on Monday
11th October. Lisa read the
student's stories based on the theme 'Frozen Worlds' and organised follow up
activities. We thank her for her time and work with the students.
CSIRO Science Interaction Day
Students and staff travelled to Morgan Primary School on Thursday 21st October
to take part in a Science Interaction Day. The CSIRO team took sessions
on 'Mini Chem' and 'Move It'. Students did various chemistry experiments,
made sherbet, did activities to work out and see how certain objects move, did
activities with Beebot a Robot, and enjoyed slushies and biscuits made by
Morgan Primary students. A great day was had by all.
T & D to Lenswood and Mylor Primary
On Monday 18th October staff observed site practices in Maths at Lenswood
Primary School and IT at Mylor Primary School. Next year these areas will
possibly be on our Site Improvement Plan especially with the introduction of
the Australian Curriculum - Maths. We have many new ideas to consider.
The day was very worthwhile.
BMX Track
Some of our students attended a meeting at Morgan on Tuesday 19th
October to give their ideas about the design of a BMX track which will be
constructed using money from the Federal Government grant and Mid Murray
Council workers volunteering their time.
A beach volleyball court is also being organised for Cadell. Students have
started fundraising for this latter project.
These two initiatives will be great for our young people.
R.S.L. News
The Annual Bob Kennett Golf Day between the
Morgan Golf Club and the Morgan R.S.L. was held
Sunday 17th October. The day got off to a good start
with mugs of
Graham and Vicki’s spicy pumpkin soup. Before tee
off, there was a toast to the late Bob Kennett, then
game on.
Lots of credit to the Golf Club the fairways looked
great with lots of greenery everywhere.
3rd fairway saw a crow take off with Lady Di’s pink
golf ball, she was not a happy chappy.
Good old Dave drove the mobile booze truck and
seemed to arrive at each group at just the right time.
The Golf club team comprising of Lorraine, Graham,
Dougie and Kenny, won this years trophy by just one
point, from Duncan, Lady Di and Mau’s team, we
have vowed to get it back next year.
The annual Bob Kennett Memorial
Losers Trophy was awarded to
Team Carleen, Rosemary and
30
Franz. Lorraine and Kenny won the
lucky squares and every participant
received a small gift.
The awards were followed with a
delicious BBQ cooked by Rod and
Donna and salads supplied by the RSL Ladies, plus
Rosemary’s special Apple pie and Di’s sherry
doused cake. We all had a great day and plan to do
it all again next year. Thanks again to the Golf Club,
its President, Committee and members.
A reminder to all our members, our annual
Christmas Party/Dinner is Thursday 2nd December
MAJOR SPONSOR FOR MANNUM’S ‘TAKE A RIVER TOUR’ FESTIVAL
The waters are rising in Mannum and so is Santos Tour Down Under fever and excitement as this international
cycle event is just around the corner.
The Mid Murray Council is host to the Stage 2 Finish of the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under and is pleased to
announce Mannum Waters as the major sponsor of Mannum’s ‘Take a River’ Tour festival.
Mannum Waters is South Australia’s first residential marina of its kind on the River Murray. The marina will be a
world-class development in the township of Mannum.
Stage 2 of the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under will commence in Tailem Bend and travel through the Adelaide
Hills, Tungkillo, Palmer and enter Mannum via Sedan, Male, Dollard, Gass, Long Gully and Purnong Roads and
lead in to the finish under the grand Santos Tour Down Under arch in Mannum’s main street.
“We have formulated an extensive programme of events in conjunction with the Stage 2 Finish in Mannum and
are extremely excited to have secured ‘Mannum Waters’ as the major sponsor of Mannum’s Take a River Tour
festival”, said Chief Executive Officer, Dean Gollan.
It has been three years since Mannum last hosted a Santos Tour Under stage and in true community style,
support events will invite residents and youth from across the Mid Murray Council and Murraylands regions to
participate in this prestigious event.
Dean Gollan said, ‘The success of the 2008 Santos Tour Down Under Regional Dance Spectacular in Mannum
attracted over 100 students from across the region as far as Cadell and Morgan. It is from this success, that we
are formulating a series of community events in conjunction with the Santos Tour Down Under such as the
Murray River Choir to showcase our artistic and cultural talents on the world wide stage”.
Mannum Waters will present the festival’s Murray River Choir and After Tour Concert/Fireworks Display.
The Mannum Waters Murray River Choir will celebrate all things Australian and profile our great waterway, the
Murray River. This artistic presentation in ‘Qantas’ choir tradition is sure to capture the hearts of all spectators
in readiness for the Stage 2 Finish of the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under and is hoped to attract over 100
singers and flag raisers for this outstanding support event.
Mannum Waters director David Potter said the festival will be a fantastic community event which Mannum
Waters is proud to support.
“The festival is a wonderful opportunity for the community and visitors alike to come together and celebrate the
final stage of a world-renowned cycling tour with the back drop of the beautiful River Murray”, he said.
“We’re delighted to be working with the Mid Murray Council”.
“The Santos Tour Down Under provides us with the opportunity to market our diverse Mid Murray Council
region and profile the Murray River after three years of devastating drought. The event provides the Mid Murray
Council with an occasion to bring our whole council community together to join visitors and celebrate the many
attractions the Murraylands and Riverland has to offer and the thrill of international cycling in our own backyard”,
added Dean Gollan.
“The Santos Tour Down Under is more than a bike race, it’s a celebration of cycling, and Mannum’s Take a
River Tour festival will be a great addition to the events taking place in January,” says Santos Tour Down
Under Race Director Mike Turtur.
“When the Tour comes to town, Mannum will be an exciting place to be and I’m sure thousands will flock to the
area to watch the racing and enjoy the ‘Take a River Tour’ festival”.
“The Mid Murray Council has really got behind the Santos Tour Down Under and it’s
a credit to their hard work and that of the local community that they have created an
event like the Take a River tour festival that will create, attract and entertain
locals and visitors to the region”.
Mannum’s ‘Take a River Tour’ festival brought to you by Mannum Waters is a
celebrating of international cycling, community camaraderie and cultural events for
everyone across the Mid Murray region and visitors to enjoy.
‘Take a River Tour’ to Mannum brought to you by Mannum Waters and enjoy their
one day festival on Wednesday 19 th January in association with the Stage 2 Finish of
the 2011 Santos Tour Down Under.
