Apology
Through an error in communications between volunteers, last month I omitted putting the notice on the passing
of Kyle (Barney to most) Schafer. Barney will be sadly missed by the community, in particular his work behind
the scenes building and setting up displays at Morgan Museum. His energy and knowledge of all things
mechanical was an inspiration to all. Not only that, a happier and friendly person, you could ever meet.
To Pam, - Sue and I give you our heartfelt sympathy, and any help you may need, we will be there.
Morgan Scenic Cruises
Great smooth ride with excellent viewing of our current water levels. On our return tourists were queuing up to
get on the next trip. And introductory only $10 per person, What value. Thanks Anna and Dean.
Still NO Full water allocation for our growers!
Drought water policy unsuited to flooding
I must be silly but with all the water going past, surely our SA fruit bowl growers should be able to use their FULL
water allocation, not just 67% of what they have paid good money for and own.
Even the The Murray-Darling Association thinks state powers to restrict water used by irrigators should be able
to be overruled by the Basin Authority. Association general secretary Ray Najar has appeared at a Federal
Parliamentary inquiry at Murray Bridge into future water use in the Basin.
"There shouldn't be any restrictions on water use for food production, there's just absolutely no need for it," he
said. "The small amount of water that we require for growers in South Australia to have full allocations, for
example, is [equivalent of] about two days' flow out of the Murray mouth.
"So it's ridiculous for the government to maintain a policy that was written for drought and use it in a flood
situation."
Mosquitoes
Take precautions against mosquitoes as numbers of the pests have exploded with higher river flows and warm,
humid weather. Mosquitoes carry diseases such as Ross River and Barmah Forrest virus and the number of
reported cases of both is on the rise.
The high river flows entering South Australia from the River Murray are providing a boon for fauna and flora on
the extensive floodplain, but the extra water is also creating ideal conditions for mosquitoes.
What you can do to help control them.
Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water so if there are pot plants, drip trays, old tyres that gather water, these are
ideal breeding places plus the use of personnel protection spray.
Also wearing loose fitting, light coloured clothing and applying insect repellent with DEET or Picaridan can also
reduce the risk of mosquito bites
Congratulations to Dan van Holst Pellekaan
Daniel Wills when rating the performance of all of our states politicians.
“Liberal backbenchers Steven Marshall, Dan van Holst Pellekaan and John Gardner have impressed since
entering Parliament in March and appear on the fast track to the shadow ministry.”
DIGITAL TELEVISION IN MORGAN
WIN SA CHANNEL 44 ABC CHANNEL 42 SBS CHANNEL 41
WIN Television’s investment in a digital translator site within the township of Morgan has significantly improved
television services to the region.
The digital switchover has delivered better picture and sound quality and will eventually give Morgan residents
access to a greater number of channels.
Viewers in Morgan are reminded that they may need to re-scan their set top boxes or run an automatic channel
scan to view the WIN Television digital service.
WIN SA can be found on Channel 44.
WIN regional SA and Ch9 Adelaide General Manager, Graeme Gilbertson thanked viewers for their patience and
persistence during the switch-off. “WIN Television is committed to regional Australia and making sure all of our
viewers receive the best possible signal available. A quick rescan of their set-top box or in-built tuner will give
viewers access to their favourite programmes,” Mr Gilbertson said.
The new digital translator site within
the township of Morgan was
announced in September 2010 with
the approval and support of the Mid
Murray Council. Construction of the
site was completed in November.
The translator has delivered Morgan
residents a local digital TV signal
rather than relying on the signals from
the Ramco Heights transmitter.
Having Trouble Receiving WIN SA?
You may need to rescan your digital
receiver using your remote
MURRAY RIVER
CHOIR HIGHLIGHT
AT MANNUM’S
TAKE A RIVER TOUR
FESTIVAL
The Murray River Choir sang three inspiring songs at Mannum’s Take a River Tour Festival brought to you by
Mannum Waters and the Mid Murray Council last Wednesday in the lead up to group sprint finish of the IG
Markets Stage 2 of the Santos Tour Down Under.
Sixty two members sang to spectators under the Santos Tour Down Under arch on Mannum’s main street.
Spectators were spellbound with the presentation and a few tears were seen with the final performance. All in the
official event t-shirt, the choir inspired the crowd with river themed songs Proud Mary and Rivers of Babylon
concluded with the grand finale of I still call Australia home concluding with all singers waving their Australian
flags with pride.
Under the excellent music direction of Tracy Schache and accompanied by pianist Paul Hilton, the choir’s
magnificent sound emanated throughout Mannum’s main street with the spectacular Santos Tour Down Under
finish arch as their backdrop.
The celebrity sprint featured Member for Schubert Ivan Venning, Mid Murray Councillors, Kerry Yeates and
Mardi Jennings, Mannum Waters Directors, Mayor Neil Martinson of Renmark Paringa Council, Andrew
Rushworth and John Weber, Sarah Demicoli and Steve Murphy, Power FM’s Stupid O’Clock Announcers, Zoe
Tomkinson from Brown Havelberg Partners Real Estate, Holly Shires from River Estates First National, Dylan
Hogarth and Angel Budarick from the Murray Valley Standard and local residents Dean Mobbs and Dave
Schache.
Mayor Dave Burgess waved off both heats with riders issued with neutral bikes from Bike SA creating no
advantage ensuring skill, speed and fitness to be the ultimate weapon in the up hill celebrity challenge.
The final was won by Mannum Waters Director, Andrew Rushworth after two exciting heats featuring Mid Murray
Council’s Shaun (Chicken) Barlettt with his motorized bike ‘Stig’ (Top Gear) mannequin to add some fun and a
few laughs during some friendly competition. Dylan Hogarth and Angel Budarick came second and third
respectively representing the Murray Valley Standard.
Perfect weather conditions were experienced by over 110 riders who participated in the Younghusband to Mannum
Recreational Ride ending in a victory ride up Mannum’s main street through the Santos Tour Down Under
arch. Spirits were very high as participants left the Mannum Ferry to their final destination of Arnold Park. All
riders aged 16 and over were entered into a raffle for a Giant Road Bike worth $2200 donated by the Aldgate Bike
Shop which was won by Sophie Van De Ven of Adelaide and the junior prize was won by Sophie Bruhn of Bow
Hill who will receive a signed jersey by the overall Santos Tour Down Under winner.
An exciting bunch sprint finish was enjoyed by approx 7000 - 8000 + crowd in Mannum and the winner from Great
Britain, Ben Swift from Sky Procycling enjoyed split second victory and the excitement was heralded by cycling
enthusiasts, visitors and locals. Second was Robbie McEwen from Radio Shack and third was Graeme Brown
from Rabobank.
Ngangaruku custodian Isobelle Campbell and Mayor Dave Burgess presented the IG Markets Stage 2 winner with
a traditional Murraylands gift, a fossilized sea urchin necklace handcrafted by Isobelle and the official Santos Tour
Down Under trophy. Later Isobelle presented the day two overall winner Robbie McEwen with a basket of
Murraylands produce.
‘Mannum and our region came alive on Wednesday with the Santos Tour Down Under and associated festivities
presented. I commend Tungkillo and Palmer for embracing the event and presenting their towns with creative
sculptures and colour”, said Mayor Dave Burgess.
‘The volunteer support for Mannum’s event was outstanding and I sincerely thank everyone involved on behalf of
the Mid Murray Council’
‘The businesses in Mannum dressed their windows with unique ideas which presented a warm welcome to the
international riders’.
Visitors and locals meandered through the many craft and food stalls on offer at Mary Ann Reserve where the live
entertainment continued throughout the afternoon with the Unley Concert Band, Baker’s Digest and Greedy Frank
culminating in a star performance by ‘Mental As Anything’ and a spectacular fireworks display started on the last
note of the Mental’s final song creating a magnificent ending to an exciting day for Mannum.
The Mannum Dock Museum won the Stage 2 and overall State award for the best presentation in the Innovation
and Effort Category for their display entered in the Santos Best Dressed Town Competition which featured the
superb presentation of artwork in the ‘Cycling on the Murray’ exhibition and an amazing presentation of creative
bikes by Mannum’s own cycling superhero Trevor Frahn and murals by the Mannum Community College.
ERIC’S 80 TH
Eric Barber turned 80 in January. His daughter Leanne and family, wanted to give him a big party. They chose
the Morgan RSL to host the event where Eric is a popular member.
Around 65 people attended - Eric’s family and friends, plus RSL members. It was a great night. Dougie ran the
bar with the assistance of Ernie and Bruce. The most delicious meats, salads and desserts were served for
supper, mainly organized by Leanne while the RSL ladies helped with some salads and desserts.
There was lots of good music, laughter and jokes. Family members gave various speeches during the night.
As Eric is the best dishwasher at the RSL, he was presented with his own apron, scourers and rubber gloves,
plus a $60 voucher to spend at the Morgan Thrifty Link store. Eric was also presented with his own ÖBE and
certificate.
Towards the end of the night out came the Birthday cake. We all had to have a piece – not that we needed it with
all we had eaten!
It was truly a great evening, Eric grinning all night, surrounded by the people he loves and who love him.
To a Great Gent!! M. Irvine.
Never Underestimate a old man
An elderly farmer in the Northern Territory had owned a large property for several years.
He had a dam in one of the lower paddocks where he had planted mango and avocado trees.
The dam had been fixed up for swimming when it was built and he also had some picnic tables placed there in
the shade of the fruit trees.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the dam to look it over, as he hadn't been there for a while.
He grabbed a ten litre bucket to bring back some fruit.
As he neared the dam, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his dam.
He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.
One of the women shouted to him, 'We're not coming out until you leave!'
The old man 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the dam naked.'
Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the crocodile.'
Moral: Old men may walk slow, but they can still think fast
Increased Flows to South Australia—Lets NOT Panic.
Due to the unprecedented amounts of water and rainfall in
12
Queensland and NSW and Victoria the information regarding flood
warnings and flows has been grossly
expanded whereby some residents in the Riverland and surrounding
districts are fearful of a 1956 flood scenario.
Flow to South Australia over the next week is expected to be within
the range of 70,000 ML/day to 80,000 ML/day as the higher flow
arrives at the South Australian border. As flow conditions upstream
change, further flow updates will be provided.
Flow over Lock 1 at Blanchetown is currently 50,000 ML/day and will
continue to slowly increase over the next week. A flow of around
80,000 ML/day is expected around late January 2011. Recent rainfall
and inflow upstream of South Australia may cause further temporary rises in flow and changed river operations
upstream of South Australia.
Flow to South Australia is likely to increase above 80,000 ML/day in late January to early February 2011 and
may approach 90,000 ML/day at the border of South Australia in early to mid February 2011. A flow of 90,000
ML/day is not a threat to towns and levee banks; however, some shack sites, roads, campsites and
causeways located on floodplains may be inundated. This flow is well within the normal historical flow range
for the River Murray in South Australia. No populated areas will be at risk of flooding from the predicted flow but
the extent of inundation of low-lying areas of the floodplain, creeks and flood runners will increase. Flood flows
from the widespread rains across much of northern New South Wales in November and December 2010 are
making their way along the Barwon-Darling River system and into Menindee Lakes, with the peak expected to
arrive in Menindee Lakes in the coming weeks. In anticipation of this peak flow, the New South Wales Office of
Water released a flow advice for the Lower Darling River on 18 January 2011, which stated that releases from
Menindee Lakes (Weir 32) will be increased over the next week up to 35,000 ML/day by 26 January 2011 and
the possibility of further increases up to 40,000 ML/day by the end of the January 2011. Widespread rainfall
occurred across the north central catchment area in Victoria on 13 January 2011, including the Goulburn,
Campaspe, Loddon, Avoca and Wimmera catchments. Some locations along the River Murray upstream of
South Australia received more than 100mm last week.
Although the Bureau of Meteorology has issued flood warnings in some of these catchments there will be
relatively minor inflows into the River Murray system and these will not result in a high flood in the River Murray
system as some of the inflows, particularly from the Campaspe River will be
attenuated through the Koondrook Forest, which is the second largest River Red Gum forest on the River
Murray system. Inflows from these rivers are not likely to create a higher peak flow to South Australia but will
extend the duration of higher flow along the River Murray. Regularly updated daily water level information can
be found at the following websites. Note that projected water levels do not take into account local wind
conditions.
Recently there has been speculation about the potential for this high flow to develop into a flood event similar to
the 1956 flood. The peak flow to South Australia in 1956 was around 350,000
ML/day, which is more than four times higher than the current forecast peak
flow of 80,000 ML/day or 90,000 ML/day. Given the forecast weather and river
conditions, a repeat of the 1956 flood event is highly unlikely.
There has also been speculation of a repeat of the 1974 flood peak, which
was 180,000 ML/day, still well above current and projected levels. This flow is
also highly unlikely based on current forecasts.
In 2000-01, flow peaked in mid-December 2000 at 64,000 ML/day and in mid-
December 1992 flows peaked at 93,000 ML/day.
“Recollections of Morgan Institute”
by Julie Dawson Daniels
(from my speech presented at Centennial Deb Ball 10/12/10
1910 From my position on 9 th Street I glimpse a timber loaded Barge on the River Murray, headed for
bustling Port of Morgan Wharf. A horse clip-clops along a dirt road leading to the School, 3 children
astride its broad back. Down the hill the 2 Hotels cater for a lively crowd. Morgan Township, founded in
1878, is growing steadily, and I am proud to be their newest addition, Morgan Institute. On Easter
Monday, 1910, an official opening Ball was held, and I was much admired.
1925 The train steams from the river port along Morgan railway, carrying vital goods for the State. The
train brought our Servicemen home from the War. At Morgan Hospital, opened in 1921, corridor lamps
never dim. I have a grand view of the busy town now, for an upstairs room was added in 1924, along
with 2 front rooms, and 2 portions added to the building front to create a Returned Soldiers Memorial.
Many enjoyable celebrations followed: Cabarets, Supper Concerts, Deb Balls, Men’s Deb Balls and Old
Time Dances. I watch couples waltzing to glorious sounds of the marvellous “Steinway” piano, played
by the magical hands of Belinda McFarlane. I recall lively conversation when a laughing crowd spilled
onto the street to witness an amazing event, - 5 street lamps! What cheers as Electric Light came to
Morgan in 1924! The town is moving fast, tho’ Motor Car Drivers are advised to slow down on Railway
Terrace, - to 8 miles an hour.
1978 Morgan’s Centenary was celebrated in style. Crowds flocked to the Institute Dinner given by
Churches of the town. Over 500 people attended, a queue stretched out to the street, but all were fed
well. A gala Centenary Parade followed and Community pride & spirit remain features of our town. The
Institute had become Council property in 1974, - (thanks to devoted Trustees & citizens no debts were
owing), - transferred into the helpful care of people like: Chairman Harry Boord, Councillor Eddie
Zerner, and District Clerk Alistair Martin. Morgan District Council continue today to help, care and work
tirelessly for all.
2010 My years are rich with memories: Masonic Balls, School Council/Welfare Dinner Dances, Community
events, Mayor’s Reception, Local Government Meetings, Public Library, Lions Concerts, Weddings,
Birthday Parties, Plays, a Fairytale Ball, - even Boxing, using the stage as the ring. In the days
before television Mr and Mrs Dearden conducted picture shows at the Institute, patrons would race to
Mrs Smith’s corner shop for sweets & cool drinks during Interval. Main Hall came alive with Bands, music
from: Dave Marshall’s accordion, Cliff Samson’s drums and Bill Bowey’s saxophone. The Hospital
closed in 1942, and the last train left Morgan in 1969. Today, on Post Office Row, “Carmine’s Antiques”
bring the past to life. Landseer Warehouse, once largest trading & shipping company on the Murray, is
a fine Museum, rich in History. The old wharf is silent, the ferry a constant life-line, and the beautiful
river-front dreams on, patiently. And I am still here, on 9 th Street, proudly waiting, for the next 100
years.
WHERE”S YAK
Our YAK is Not vertically challenged, but the rising river saw her and hubby Trev, wading chest high though
water to board their house boat.
A short stay at the Pobkes, ensured they were able to attend all the Pre Xmas Functions. They have currently
swapped their Riverview for a Seaview at their daughter's cooling off in the pool.
LION LOCAL NEWS by your roaring reporter
LION OF THE MONTH
This month LION is TREVOR DIXON. He is an active member for the past 9 years and has
been lion tamer for those years. He is always there to lend a hand in either setting up for a
function or helping with a B.B.Q.
Trevor has been to many of LIONS conventions and has dressed up as a sugar plum fairy (lion fundraising )
I have also been told he is pretty good on the dance floor, women seem to swoon around him especially a lady
named Corrine. His hobbies are gardening and helps out at the activity centre when he can. We would like to
thank Trevor for his participation in our club and hope he will be with us for many more years to come.
Merry Morgan does it again!
What a great day was had by all at the Morgan Christmas Fair & Pageant!
From early morning Classic Hits 5RM broadcast live from Morgan aboard one of Foxtale Houseboat’s luxury
boats, interviewing many of our local business identities and advertising Morgan’s special day. The Rusty Boys,
once again entertained us from early afternoon with their special brand of rock & roll music. There was a variety
of craft, food and amusement stalls on site along with the very popular rock climbing wall supplied and manned
by Scouts SA. Many climbed aboard The Navy Special Events Group‘s inflatable craft and the Navy tattoos
were highly sort after.
And then there was the Morgan Christmas Pageant announced with great gusto by the resplendent Town Crier,
Geoff Mattschoss. The magnificent SA Detachment of the Royal Navy Band dressed in their whites led the way
and it was great to see the fantastic spectacle put on by members of the Morgan Community and friends from
surrounding districts. Hayley Campbell, our Pageant Princess, did us all proud and we thank all those involved
in the 43 colourful floats, walkers, bikes etc for their extraordinary contributions.
And it was great to have Wack back to make sure we had every little detail covered & have the floats ready to
roll. Santa gave all the children goody bags prepared earlier by a contingent of wonderful Morgan ladies and we
thank them and everyone who donated so generously for the kids. Thanks to volunteers from Morgan & Cadell
CFS, Mid Murray Council, SA Ambulance, Waikerie St Johns, Uniting Church Choir and SAPOL,
This event would not be a success without the support of our special sponsors, local businesses and individuals
and we thank them on behalf of the Morgan Community.
Have you planted your pumpkin seeds yet!! It’s that time again as the Cadell Harvest Festival, held on
the Easter Saturday from 1.30pm, is drawing closer. The harvest Festival is a unique Family Day held
at the Cadell oval and has a variety of fun events for all the Family. The hotly contested Cockroach
races will once again feature with Carp throwing and the much publicised Tug ‘o’ war. This is a fun
filled day and it has gone from strength to strength each year. The Giant Pumpkin competition was a
huge success last year with over seventy entries and this year the prize is a trip to America for the
winner. Keep your eyes peeled for the amazing scarecrow display leading up to this event.!!
Prizes galore for the kids and great Day Out….
open with each other. So, I think it’s time you learned where
blogs and tweets come from.”
Mum, it’s gonna be a long ride to Grandma’s, and while
we have some time alone together, I think it’d be good for
us to talk about some things. I’m getting older, and I’m
not always gonna be around the house to explain stuff to
you. I know you have a lot of questions, and I want us to
be open with each other. So, I think it’s time you learned
where blogs and tweets come from.
I don’t know what kind of stories you’ve heard from your
friends or the ladies in your book club.
Sometimes, old people will spread around what
they’ve heard from other old people.
This can make things even more confusing and scary.
That’s why it’s important you get the straight facts from
me.
The internet is a very beautiful thing if used properly.
When a person loves a funny video very much, he or she may want to share it with someone special to them.
This is called linking and if done properly, it can bring people together in a very special union of love: usually the
love of sneezing animals, or bed intruders, or someone doing something stupid. But it’s important to be sparing
when you send your links. You don’t want to become the neighbourhood outbox, constantly forwarding yourself
around. Nobody wants that kind of reputation. Trust me, you do not want to be known as a “spammer”.
Now when someone has a lot of things they want to say, they may want to try blogging. Blogging is a kind of
social intercourse, and should only be tried after years of experience with the internet. Think of a blog as a
newspaper that people actually read. It’s a very personal thing, and you need healthy boundaries. For example,
you can’t go around blogging about the time I peed my pants when we went to see Ice Age like you told that
woman in line at Woolworths yesterday. You need to be cautious before you move on to something more
serious, like a tweet.
A tweet is a powerful yet brief experience that you share with thousands of people, sometimes even famous
ones. Don’t feel bad if you don’t tweet! A lot people never tweet, and they live perfectly happy lives. Yes, you’ll
read a lot of bad tweets before you find the right ones. But once you do find that perfect feed, you’ll spend the
whole day wanting to refresh on it. And whatever you do, don’t follow @aplusk.
You should try Facebook, though. Everyone tries Facebook at least once in their life. It usually starts in school.
It may seem like harmless fun at first, but I know a lot of people who once they started Facebooking, couldn’t
stop. They’d waste their whole day updating their status, commenting on friends vacation photos, and, tragically,
poking almost complete strangers. It can become very unhealthy, so I want you to be careful. And listen; I don’t
want you ever writing on my Wall; even if it’s my birthday. That’s just not appropriate for a mother and daughter.
I hope this wasn’t too embarrassing for you. We’ll talk about what a meme is when we get to Grandma’s.
I don’t want to have to explain it twice.
The hundred of Lindley
The hundred of Lindley is north of Morgan where
several areas were opened up in the 1880’s for
dry land farming.
Rudolph Haupt became one of the founders of
the Lindley Lutheran Church when on the 24 th of
March 1886, he, Carl Winter, Carl Promnitz, Fritz
Blutcher and Ernest Heinrich paid 2 pounds 3
shillings and six pence for one and a half acres of
land – section 29c Hundred of Lindley which
became the site of the Lindley School, church, and
cemetery.
Farming proved to be difficult in the Lindey area
and many families moved in the 1920’s.
The school closed in 1920’s.
Many families researching family history visit the
cemetery.
With this in mind, Daryl Jackman from Mc Laren
Flat, with the help of his Morgan cousin's, clean the
cemetery grounds twice a year .
Some families living in the Hundred of Lindley were;
Bartel, Escott, Berndt, Haupt, Briese, McIntyre,
Dolan, Kakoschke, Promnitz, Traeger, Watson,
Wohling, Bruhn and Jachmann.
Many descendants names still live in the area.
AUSTRALIA DAY 2011
30
On the banks of the river Murray at
Morgan. A cool start to the day, but
beautiful Aussie weather followed.
Tables, chairs, eskies were set out. Aussie
icons and flags adorned the riverfront. With
pride we got into the spirit of the day, with
red, white and blue clothing, flags, hats,
thongs, sunnies, sunscreen, face paint,
tattoos and good true blue music blared in
the background. . Thanks to the Lions we
queued for delicious bacon and egg
toasties, orange juice, tea and coffee.
( quite a few people were observed going
back for seconds) Spruker, Georgie, let no
one miss out on a delicious
lamington, But where were the vegemite
sandwiches!
Our Debutantes, their partners and the
Pageant Queen were awarded Australia
Day Junior Achievement Awards what
poised and mature young people they are.
They are our future citizens and we wish
them health, happiness and a great
future. Other activities on the day was a
fun cricket match, not good scoring, a tug
of war and marbles. What a great Aussie
day out!! Thanks to Pat Mitchell and her
hard working team of Lions!!
