Ligusticum scoticum L.
7 The Slyne Head sighting (L 51 41) is reported in the Atlas (1962), however, no
specimen is known, and Palin (1988) accepts the recommendation in the Flora, that
the record cannot be accepted without confirmation. This record may be in
confusion with the very glossy, bright green form of Angelica sylvestris which
occurs in the area.
Hedera helix L. subsp. hibernica (G.Kirchn.) D.C.McClint.
2, 2A, 3, 7 McAllister & Rutherford (1990) have mapped several sites for which
chromosome counts indicate the presence of the tetraploid (2n=96) ivy. No counts
of diploid ivy (subsp. helix) were made for the Flora region (ibid.). Herbarium
material is scant, and the only specimen at DBN for the region, which was collected
on walls at Gleninagh (2) in 1987, has the trichome character of subsp. helix.
Critical field observation has still to be undertaken in Ireland to reveal the true
distribution pattern of these two ivies.
Confirmation of Atlas record.
This species is now divided into 2 subspecies based on rhizome and leaf characters,
however, as stated in the Flora, the differences are not clear cut:
Subsp. occidentalis (Rouy) Stace has orange stolons and leaves to 10 mm long,
and >1 mm wide. This subspecies is confined to calcareous dunes. Subsp.
cynanchica has brown or absent stolons and longer, narrower leaves.
