2013-14 The<strong>me</strong>:<strong>What</strong> <strong>Patriotism</strong> <strong>Means</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>me</strong>.<strong>What</strong> are the rules?• Essay length: 300-400 typewritten words.• You must write your own essay.• All essays should be typewritten in English withno color or graphics and cannot be less than 300words or greater than 400 words in length.(Essays under or over these word amounts will beeliminated.) Every word is counted regardless <strong>of</strong>length. The essay title (the<strong>me</strong>) or added footnotesdo not contribute <strong>to</strong> the word count.Deadline—The completed essay and entry form must be in thehands <strong>of</strong> the VFW Post Chairman by midnight onNov. 1, 2013.In no way may contestants identify themselveswithin their essay. Do not put your na<strong>me</strong> on youressay. The entry form is your essay’s cover sheet.Secure the Official Student Entry Form with a stapleor other fastener on <strong>to</strong>p <strong>of</strong> your essay. Contestants areallowed <strong>to</strong> enter only once (one Post competition).Contestants found in violation <strong>of</strong> this rule will faceelimination from the competition and will be required<strong>to</strong> return any and all prize money awarded or received.The essay must be a contestant’s original work anda product <strong>of</strong> the contestant’s own thinking. Theapproach <strong>to</strong> the Patriot’s Pen the<strong>me</strong> should be positiveand clearly focused. Poetry is not acceptable.Quotations may be used sparingly if plainly identifiedwherever used. A contestant’s teacher, counselor orparent may check the essay for punctuation, grammarand/or spelling, but the content must remain the contestant’s.Contestants will be judged on the basis <strong>of</strong>their essay alone and are not required <strong>to</strong> present theessay orally. All essays beco<strong>me</strong> the property <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Veterans</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Foreign</strong> <strong>Wars</strong>. The VFW retains non-exclusiverights <strong>to</strong> use your essay and likeness in the promotionand execution <strong>of</strong> the organization’s programsand activities.Note: All entries must be submitted <strong>to</strong> a VFWPost competition. A positive approach is recom<strong>me</strong>nded <strong>to</strong> express your viewpoint.Knowledge <strong>of</strong> the the<strong>me</strong> is worth 30 points:You must show a thorough knowledge <strong>of</strong> the the<strong>me</strong> in your work.Demonstrate you have researched the issue extensively.The<strong>me</strong> develop<strong>me</strong>nt is worth 35 points:Answer all relevant facts about the the<strong>me</strong> such as the who, what, where, whenand why. Relate the the<strong>me</strong> <strong>to</strong> your own experiences.Clarity <strong>of</strong> ideas is worth 35 points:Write your essay in an easy-<strong>to</strong>-understand format. Leave your reader with aclear understanding <strong>of</strong> your explanation <strong>of</strong> the the<strong>me</strong>.<strong>What</strong> is the the<strong>me</strong>?VFW’s Commander-in-Chief annually chooses the year’s the<strong>me</strong>.
