Jim Grossnicklaus Leadership Award RecipientMELINDA SHUMAKERMelinda Shumaker, North Clackamas School DistrictFacilities Manager was the recipient of the Jim GrossnicklausLeadership Award at the annual April conference. While servingas the Maintenance Services Supervisor for the Beaverton SchoolDistrict, Melinda successfully assumed duties and responsibilities ofthe grounds, custodial, courier, mailing and printing departmentsand saved the district $100,000 within the mail budget. Sherestructured grounds work between schools and MaintenanceServices.Melinda has been a member of <strong>OSFMA</strong> since 2003. She wasZone 1 Director from 2006-2008, was elected Vice President in2008, served as President-Elect, and served as President in 2011and Past President in 2012. She has served on the conferencecommittee since 2008 and on the membership recruitmentcommittee. In addition to hercommitment to <strong>OSFMA</strong>, Melindawas also the Facilitator for theBeaverton School District SafetyCommittee.Melinda has earned her Bachelors of Science Degree inMechanical Engineering Technology and her Master’s Degree inBusiness Administration. In 2006, she was awarded the <strong>OSFMA</strong>Professional Growth Facilities Maintenance Manager Certificationand served on the Professional Growth Committee. As President,one of Melinda’s goals was to start the Mini Conferences, and thisOctober with be the third mini conference. In 2007, she chaired theCooperative Public Agencies of Washington County (CPAWC) andassisted with their fall workshops. vJim Grossnicklaus Leadership AwardJim was one of the mostknowledgeable and respectedprofessionals in education and facilityrelated work. Jim began his careeras an Industrial Arts teacher beforetransitioning into facility managementin 1979. As the Physical Plant Directorof the Greater Albany School Districtuntil his retirement in 1993, Jim wasalso a charter member of <strong>OSFMA</strong>.He continued to serve <strong>OSFMA</strong> in hisretirement as the liaison to the OregonLegislature until he passed away in1996. In 1999, the Jim GrossnicklausLeadership Award began, in order toremember Jim and recognize <strong>OSFMA</strong>members who have contributedoutstanding leadership within OFMSA,their school district, their community,and the statewide community of schooldistricts facility managers. This awardis traditionally presented at the <strong>OSFMA</strong>Annual Conference.Award Criteria<strong>OSFMA</strong> wishes to recognize Jim’scontributions to K-12 education andfacility management by presentingthis Leadership Award to one of ourmembers each year at our annualconference.Any member of <strong>OSFMA</strong> can make anomination for this award by contactingtheir Zone Director or another memberof the Board. The Board will considera list of criteria in making the finaldecision.The award will consist of a plaque, aletter to the member’s home district, apress release when appropriate, and anarticle in the <strong>OSFMA</strong> newsletter profilingthe member and the contributions he orshe has made.Award criteria might Include:• Demonstrating outstanding leadershipand management skills in runningtheir own department and earning thesupport and respect of their own staffand district.• Outstanding achievement in their localdistrict such as, responding to a criticalsituation or by meeting a long-termchallenge their district has had.• Contributions to <strong>OSFMA</strong> throughcommittee work, Board involvement, orsimilar leadership activities.• Accomplishments in statewide facilityrelated activities.
