Lightning PolicyThe purpose of this guide is to provide a default policy to those responsible for making decisions concerning thesuspension and restart of a contest or practice based on the presence of lightning.1. Criteria for suspension and resumption of play:a. A 40 second or less Flash-to-Bang count calls for removal of the athletes/participants from the field to anappropriate shelter.b. Thirty-minute rule. Once play/practice has been suspended, wait at least 30 minutes after the last flash oflightning is witnessed or thunder is heard prior to resuming play.Common sense is the best rule of thumb when dealing with lightning. The default decision should err on the side ofbeing conservative – lightning is not something that should be taken lightly.Inclement weather, especially lightning, can enter the area of Dick’s Sporting Goods Park very quickly. Therefore, itis mandatory that all visitors adhere to the lightning policy to ensure that all people are safe from harm. When usingthe Flash-to-Bang method, any lightning strike seen within 30 seconds of the last heard thunder should resultin immediate evacuation. All visitors must seek shelter in either a permanent, grounded, enclosed structure or inan enclosed vehicle. In addition to this method, KSE will also have lightning detectors as well as a 24 hour weathermonitoring system that will help determine the safety and urgency of the storm.Visitors must remain in the sheltered area for 30 minutes after the last seen or predicted lightning bolt. The delaycan continue for up to 90 minutes, upon which KSE will make the decision of whether or not to continue the gameoe event or postpone/cancel the game or event. Rescheduled games are contingent on the availability of fields andthe priority of the given event.• All tournament directors, referees and club management will meet with KSE prior to the event to make surethat all parties understand the procedures and importance of this policy.• If a lightning bolt is seen prior to KSE’s technology recognizing it, it is the referees’ responsibility to evacuatethe premises.• Under no circumstance should any team continue to play when a thunderstorm is within 20 miles and hasbeen recognized as a threat to the location.• Seek immediate shelter in one of the following areas: enclosed, hard top vehicle or a substantial buildingsuch as a concession stand or permanent bathrooms.• Avoid standing near trees and/or water, staying in wide open areas, and avoid any contact with metalobjects, phones, or running water.Call 911 immediately and notify the nearest KSE staff member if someone is struck or feels that they havebeen affected by the storm.19
