A PASSION FOR RIDINGBack in 1974 when I started Specialized, I made a consciousdecision to focus on high-end bicycle components andequipment. I had ridden through Europe and was impressedwith the passion people there had for high-tech bikes andequipment. I knew there was a demand for these kinds ofproducts in the States, but supplies were scarce. Followingmy passion for cycling, I sold just about everything Iowned—including my VW bus—to gather the capital tostart this company.I settled on the name Specialized simply because that washow all of us riders referred to high-end components at thetime. I had no idea we would come to have such an impacton the growth and accessibility of cycling, but I am pleasedthat we’ve been able to make all types of riding more funfor more people. Our founding principle—to focus on therider’s need for functional, technically advanced productsthat provide a true performance benefit—is even more validtoday than it was back when we started. It’s what makesus Specialized, and when we successfully deliver on thatprinciple, we make every rider’s time on a bike better. It was our desire to improve everyone’s time on a bike thatdrove us to develop our own line of suspension componentsincluding our E150 fork, the lightest and stiffest fork of itskind, and AFR (Active Functional Response) Shocks, whichfeature a host of innovations, including our Spike Valve andBrain Fade technologies. Suspension is one of the mostcomplicated parts of a bike, and by integrating the designof our time-tested FSR suspension and bicycle chassis withforks and shocks, we’re able to control every element of theride of our bikes. The new Roubaix SL is also the result of our drive to improvethe people’s riding experiences. It’s the lightest enduranceroad bike out there and, because it boasts greater verticalcompliance than letting 30psi out of your tire, provides thesmoothest ride around.Although we’ve been in business for over three decades,we still have an amazing passion for riding and for creatinginnovative bicycles and equipment. Thanks to passionatecyclists who believe in Specialized and the gear that wemake, it feels like we’re just warming up.Thanks for supporting our company and our family ofindependent bicycle dealers around the world. Now, let'sgo riding!WARNING: The actions depicted in this catalog are potentially dangerous. The riders seen are experienced experts or professionals.
