<strong>Comparing</strong> <strong>Qualifications</strong> Translating the value of your existing qualifications to IrelandStart Module 03Eng.7The Leaving Certificate Vocational ProgrammeThis differs from the established Leaving Certificate in placing a concentration on technical subjectsand including additional modules which have a vocational focus.The Leaving Certificate Applied ProgrammeThis has as its primary objective the preparation of participants for adult and working life throughrelevant learning experiences. These aims to develop the following areas of human endeavour:spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, aesthetic and physical. The Leaving Certificate Applied is notrecognised for direct entry to third level courses but it can enable students to take Post-LeavingCertificate courses.Third Level EducationThird Level Education is made up of a number of sectors. The University Sector, the TechnologicalSector and the Colleges of Education are substantially funded by the State. In addition there are anumber of Independent Private Colleges.There are seven Universities and they are autonomous and self-governing. They offer degreeprogrammes at Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate level.The Technological sector includes Institutes of Technology which provide programmes of education andtraining in areas such as Business, Science, Engineering, Linguistics and Music to Certificate, Diplomaand Degree levels. The Department of Education and Science has overall responsibility for the sector.There are five Colleges of Education. These specialise in training for primary school teachers. Theyoffer a three-year Bachelor of Education Degree and an 18-month Post-Graduate Diploma.Applications for most full-time Undergraduate courses are made through a Central ApplicationsOffice (CAO). The CAO provides an applications pack with a handbook which lists all the courses onoffer and gives information on how to apply. The CAO website is: www.cao.ieFurther and Adult EducationFurther education comprises of education and training which takes place after Second Levelschooling but which is not part of the Third Level System. It includes programmes such as Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) Courses; the Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (second-chanceeducation for the unemployed); programmes in Youthreach and Senior Traveler Training Centers forearly school leavers; other literacy and basic education; and self-funded evening adult programmesin Second-Level SchoolsPLC courses take place in schools, colleges and community education centers around the country.The courses are generally full-time and last for one to two years. They offer a mixture of “hands-on”practical work, academic work and work experience. They are designed as a step towards skilledemployment or further education.
