CCSDS RECOMMENDED STANDARD FOR TM SYNCHRONIZATION AND CHANNEL CODING2 OVERVIEW2.1 ARCHITECTUREFigure 2-1 illustrates the relationship of this Recommended Standard to the Open SystemsInterconnection reference model (reference [3]). Two sublayers of the Data Link Layer aredefined for CCSDS space link protocols. The TM and AOS Space Data Link Protocolsspecified in references [1] and [2], respectively, correspond to the Data Link ProtocolSublayer, and provide functions for transferring data using the protocol data unit called theTransfer Frame. The Synchronization and Channel Coding Sublayer provides additionalfunctions necessary for transferring Transfer Frames over a space link. These functions areerror-control coding/decoding, Transfer Frame delimiting/synchronizing, and bit transitiongeneration/removal.OSI LAYERSNETWORK ANDUPPER LAYERSDATA LINK LAYERPHYSICAL LAYERCCSDS LAYERSNETWORK ANDUPPER LAYERSDATA LINKPROTOCOLSUBLAYERSYNCHRONIZATIONAND CHANNELCODING SUBLAYERPHYSICAL LAYERCCSDSPROTOCOLSTM or AOS SPACE DATALINK PROTOCOLTM SYNCHRONIZATIONANDCHANNEL CODINGRADIO FREQUENCY ANDMODULATION SYSTEMSFigure 2-1: Relationship with OSI Layers2.2 SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS2.2.1 GENERALThe Synchronization and Channel Coding Sublayer provides the following three functionsfor transferring Transfer Frames over a space link:a) error-control coding, including frame validation;b) synchronization; andc) pseudo-randomizing.CCSDS <strong>131.0</strong>-B-2 Page 2-1 August 2011
