SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION1977 FOOTBALL COACH OF THE YEARRUSSELL MORRELL, BURKERuss has had coact~ing stints ,it Irene, Rapid City and Burke.In 1977 his team was 9-0 at Burke, winning the S.E.S.D. Conference,and they were also the top-rated football team in Class A.For this his colleagues voted him Football Coach of the Year.

He received his Bachelor of Science Degreefrom USD/S where his love for running and coaching was inspiredby the late Don Baker. He spent one year as head track coach inHoward before taking over as head track and cross country coachat Brandon-Valley. His runners have won the Big Eight Conferencein four of the last five years and were third in the State Class AAthis past year.For these feats the SDHSCA elected Lyle Claussen ofBrandon the Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year.

He coached at Hurlcy dnd Bcresford beforetaking over as head track and cross country coach at Stevens HigliSchool in 1969.His boys track teams have won tlic state title three times, andhis girls cross country teams have won the state title two times.He has previously been named Track Coach of the Yedr and nowhas been named Girls Cross Country Coach of tlic Year.

SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION1977 GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEARBOB WINTER, YANKTONCoach Bob Winter is a graduate of Wessington Springs HighSchool and Yankton College. Prior to becoming head girls basketballcoach at Yankton High School, he served as head boysbasketball coach. His record as a boys coach was 142-62 with sixE.S.D. titles and one state title in 1974. His girls have compiled anenviable record of two state titles in three years. He is currentlythe only coach in the state who has coached state championship inboth boys and girls basketball.For these feats the SDHSCA has elected Bob their GirlsBasketball Coach of the Year.

SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION1978 WRESTLING COACH OF THE YEARJERRY OPBROEK, MITCHELLJerry Opbrock gradudtcd from F'iirfax High School andUSDIS. He received his Masters Degree from Kansas State in 1971.He coached at Sacred Heart, Minnesota and at Burke beforebecoming head wrestling coach at Mitchell. His teams have alwaysbeen strong and last year the Mitchell team was no exceptionwinning the Section 2A tourney and finishing one-half of a pointaway from the state title. His 1977 tcam was 13-1 in dual meetswith an E.S.D. Confcrencc Championship. He is our WrestlingCoach of the Year.

SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION1978 GYMNASTICS COACH OF THE YEARCHARLENE JOHNSON, MITCHELLCharlene Johnson guided the Mitchell High School gymnasticsteam to a second straight E.S.D. Championship, a Section2A championship, and a fourth in the state tourney last year. Herteams have always displayed a consistent competitiveness, and forthese accomplishments the S.D.H.S.C.A. elected her the GymnasticsCoach of the Year.

SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION1978 BOYS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEARROGER SCHAFFER, ELK POINTRoger Schaffer graduated from Ramona High School andplayed his college basketball at the University of South Dakota.He began coaching at Elk Point in 1966. His over-all record is afine 166-11 1 mark. His teams have always shown good fundamentalsand great defense.In 1977 his team dedicated themselves to playing in the statetourney and finished as the runner-up team. For these accomplishmentshis colleagues voted him the SDHSCA Boys BasketballCoach of the Year.

SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION1978 BOYS TRACK COACH OF THE YEARLEROY STEVENSON. HURONCoach LeRoy "Buzz" Stevenson graduated from l pswichHigh School and Yankton College. He began his tenure at HuronHigh School in 1970 after short stints at Columbia and Elkton. HisHuron teams have won three straight E.S.D. crowns and finishedthird in the state meet.For his fine job of coaching the Huron Tigers the SDHSCAelected him Boys Track Coach of the Year.

SOUTH DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL COACHES ASSOCIATION1978 GIRLS TRACK COACH OF THE YEARRUSS STRANDE, BROOKINGSRuss Strande is a 1961 graduate of Northern State College.His girls track team at Brookings has consistently been improvingover the years and last year finished second in the E.S.D. Conferenceand in the state meet. For his team's fine showing andimprovement the SDHSCA elected him Girls Track Coach of theYear.

1978 DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDARNIE WILDERMUTHArnie Wildermuth has served thirty years as a timer andscorer at basketball games in Dell Rapids. He has helped coachgrade school basketball teams and even finds time to head up thechain gang in football. As all coaches know, these are a verynecessary part of high school athletics, and for these years ofdedication the SDHSCA is happy to present Arnie a DistinguishedService Award.

DISTRICT SIX GIRLS TRACK COACH OF THE YEARMARV SHERRILLDistrict Six of NHS/ACA includes South Dakota, NorthDakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Colorado, and Iowa.Marv Sherrill of Watertown has led his girls track teams toseveral E.S.D. and state titles. He has also been named a SDHSCAGirl Track Coach of the Year.DISTRICT SIX GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEARGALE LUNDBERG-wGale Lundberg has compiled a girls basketball coachingrecord of 74-7. His team at Clear Lake placed fourth in the statetourney in 1975, was State "B" Champion with a 24-0 record in1976 and finished runner-up in 1977 with a 23-2 record. Gale wasnamed SDHSCA Girls Basketball Coach of the Year in 1976.
