1982 FOOTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

BOB GARRY, LENNOX<br />

The <strong>1983</strong> Lennox squad produced a 9-3 record and the<br />

State Class 11 -AA Championship. "I consider myself a student<br />

of the game. What I do is mainly what I've learned<br />

from other people."


1982 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

RICK EVANS, MARTY<br />

This was the f~rst year that White River i~ative Rick Evans<br />

hod coached cross country, and he led the Morty boys to<br />

the State Class B Championship, "The boys really dese~e<br />

the credit. They set a goal for the state meet and really<br />

wanted it. They really came together as a team."


1982 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

RUSS STRANDE, BROOKINGS<br />

Russ Stronde began coaching girls cross country in 1975<br />

at Brookings and has guided them to state championships<br />

in 1980 and in 1982. "The award goes bock to the kids<br />

you coach. We've had good attitude and good hard<br />

workers, plus same talent."


1982 GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

DON SHIELDS, PIERRE<br />

Shields' 1982 team hod o 21 -2 record, o shore of the<br />

conference title and won the State Class A Championship,<br />

In his four years as head coach every team has qualified<br />

for the state tourney. "Fair and honesty goes a long way<br />

with hids. What we're trying to teach in athletics goes a lot<br />

farther than just winning and losing."


<strong>1983</strong> WRESTLING COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

WILLIE SEIBEL, VERMlLLlON<br />

The Vermillion Tanagers piled up 140 points in the state<br />

tournament and had three individual champions, winning<br />

the <strong>1983</strong> championship, in Seibel's fourth year as head<br />

coach. "We were just hoping that come the end of the<br />

seoson we would be all together as a unit."


<strong>1983</strong> GYMNASTICS COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

MARK UPWARD. VERMlLLlON<br />

Mark Upward's squad won their second straight Class B<br />

State Championship, outdistancing the runnerup team by<br />

10 points, with 141.88. 'We knew we had a good team<br />

and could go out and put it together if we wanted it bad<br />

enough . . . had a very exceptional year."


<strong>1983</strong> BOYS BASKETBALL COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

WAYNE CARNEY, HAMLIN<br />

The Hamlin Chargers compiled a 23-2 record and won<br />

the Class B state Championship, In six seasons at Hamlin,<br />

Carney's teams have won 80 percent of their games with<br />

six district and five regional champ~onships.

GALEN BUSCH, MISSION<br />

Busch began coaching at Todd County High School in<br />

1978, and his teams have a 11 4-29 record. In the two<br />

years of state volleyball tourneys his teams have been the<br />

runnerup.

GROTON<br />

The Groton Tigers won their second straight Class A Boys<br />

Track Championship. 'We told the kids a 'normal' day was<br />

all we needed," and their performance was excellent.


<strong>1983</strong> GIRLS TRACK COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

RANDY HERMANSEN, EUREKA<br />

The Eureka Trojans won their region title ond placed second<br />

in the Class D state meet. "I was most happy to even<br />

be considered, so you must lknow how I feel."


<strong>1983</strong> GOLF COACH OF THE YEAR<br />

CLARENCE "RED" ZACHER, CUSTER<br />

The Custer Wildcat girls golf team has won three consecutive<br />

state titles with coach Zacher. Outstanding tolent<br />

and an optimistic approach are the reasons. "I was on the<br />

winning side lots of times this year - it's been o super

HARVEY HAMMRICH, WATERTOWN<br />

Hammrich has been a coach or athletic director since<br />

1960 and come to Watertown in 1977. Prior to that he<br />

sewed at Eureka and at Webster.


<strong>1983</strong> DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD<br />

CHARLES HOOVER, ONlDA<br />

Given for outstanding contributions to high school<br />

athletics and dedication to the highest and best in high<br />

school athletics,<br />

Chuck's affiliation with public school athletics dotes back<br />

to his own days as on athlete, and in the 1940's he<br />

became a basketball referee.<br />

He has long been a supporter of thevarious high school<br />

sports in Onido and for ot least 25 years sewed as<br />

timekeeper and clock operator for their basketball<br />

games. His support of athletic programs continues and is<br />

appreciated by the school and the community.


<strong>1983</strong> SPORTSCASTER OF THE YEAR<br />

TOM MAXWELL, SIOUX FALLS<br />

Tom Maxwell is with KSFY-TV in Sioux Falls as assistant<br />

sports director. Fans have enjoyed his color commentary<br />

for the boys and girls state basketball tournament the<br />

past three years.
