1. 1. Eco Design – if you want to build bikes better, then treat them as living things. To build bikes better, we adopted the basic principles of Eco Design, which uses the proven OKALA method to score an item’s impact on the environment from its origin to usage and eventual end of life. In other words, if we think about a product in terms of its lifecycle – with its own birth, life, and its eventual end – we then begin to understand how it impacts the world around us. Introducing Belleville and Atwood, Trek’s new line of Eco Design bikes. Or as we like to think about it – two better built bikes. 1. Urban Ecology Center, Milwaukee, WI 2. Steel, our primary frame material, is less toxic and requires fewer steps to manufacture than other metal processes. Its natural vibration damping qualities provide a smooth ride, and it remains one of toughest materials around. Sourcing. Since the majority of the components are from Asia, we chose distributors near to the point of manufacture. This “close sourcing” helps keep our transportation emissions low. So, while we are still the largest producer of bicycles in the USA, making eco-friendly bikes in China is completely possible. Finish. By powder coating our frames, we minimize overspray and eliminate waste. No solvents or paint washes are used, and it’s therefore much less toxic than traditional processes. Plus, we chose bolts protected by an alternative to chrome plating, ensuring no toxins are ever released into the earth. Life – a useful life is a friendlier life Our Eco Design bikes optimize utility and maintain a timeless aesthetic. They’re made from long-lasting, recyclable materials, and loaded with utilitarian features. Racks and fenders increase their overall useful life, and each bike’s functional design approach provides years of incredibly fun, useful rides. They’re an ideal substitute for your car for typical errands around town. Afterlife – designed for disassembly Nothing lasts forever, so we make our Eco Design bikes with disassembly in mind. The saddle comes apart with ease and then can be recycled. The hard plastic grips can be moved to future bikes – or thrown right into your recycling bin. Plus, the frame can accommodate different gearing configurations, and with a little love can last a lifetime. 2. 3. ECO DESIGN 7
