Since 1January 2005 she is in charge of Austria’sdevelopment cooperation as DirectorGeneral in the Ministry for ForeignAffairs.Irene Freudenschuss-Reichl foundedthe Global Forum on Sustainable <strong>Energy</strong>(GFSE) in 1999 and acted as Convenorfor the GFSE’s five global meetings(www.gfse.at). She has published variousarticles on global issues in Austrian an<strong>di</strong>nternational scholarly and mainstreampublications as well as a book (‘zukunftsfähigleben – Spiritualität und Praxis derNachhaltigkeit’. Dr Lawrence L. KazmerskiDr Kazmerski is Directorof the National Centerfor Photovoltaics (NCPV)at the National <strong>Renewable</strong><strong>Energy</strong> Laboratory,Golden, Colorado. He wasat (Electrical Engineering)of the University of Maine before comingto SERI (NREL) in 1977. His research atMaine included NSF- and ERDA-fundedwork in thin-film photovoltaics and thereport of the first thin-film copper-in<strong>di</strong>um<strong>di</strong>selenide(CIS) solar cell. He was SERI’sfirst staff member in photovoltaics, hiredspecifically to establish efforts in thecharacterization of photovoltaic materialsand devices; he led NREL efforts inmeasurements and characterization formore than 20 years. He has held adjunctprofessorships at the University of Colorado,Colorado School of Mines, and theUniversity of Denver. Dr. Kazmerski haspublished over 300 journal papers in theareas of solar cells, thin films, semiconductormaterials and devices, surfaceand interface analysis, molecular beamepitaxy, semiconductor defects, scanningprobe microscopy, nanoscale technology,high-temperature superconductivity, solarand photovoltaics technologies, and solarhydrogen. He has authored or e<strong>di</strong>ted fourbooks, and serves on the e<strong>di</strong>torial boardof five journals—and he has more than160 invited presentations at internationalconferences, workshops, and seminars. Hewas co-founder and e<strong>di</strong>tor of the journalSOLAR CELLS, published by Elsevier-Sequoia(1979-1991). Kazmerski is E<strong>di</strong>tor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal, <strong>Renewable</strong>and Sustainable <strong>Energy</strong> Reviews. He hasthree R&D 100 Awards. He is active inthe IEEE, AVS, MRS, APS, ISES, andASES. Kazmerski was the recipient of thePeter Mark Memorial Award of the AVSin 1981 and IEEE William R. CherryAward in 1993. This year, Kazmerskiwas elected as a member of the NationalAcademy of Engineering (NAE).Professor Dr Hermann HofbauerProfessor Hofbauer is fullprofessor at the Vienna Universityof Technology. He isvice head of the Departmentof Chemical Engineering,head of the research <strong>di</strong>visionfor ‘Chemical ProcessEngineering and Flui<strong>di</strong>zed Bed Technology’,and head of the research group of‘Future <strong>Energy</strong> Technology’. Since 2004 heis also dean for study affairs for ChemicalEngineering at the Vienna University ofTechnology. Prof. Hofbauer has got morethan 20 years of experience in thermalbiomass utilization and he is coor<strong>di</strong>natorof several European as well as nationalprojects in this field. He is chairman andscientific head of the network of competencefor ‘<strong>Energy</strong> from Biomass - RENET-Austria’ and also key researcher at thecompetence centre ‘Austrian BioenergyCentre – Area Gasification’. In 1999, he was bestowed with“Climate Technology LeadershipAward” by Climate TechnologyInitiative(CTI) at the occasion of the 5thConference of the Parties (COP) to theUnited Nations Framework Conventionon Climate Change (UNFCCC). In 2000he was bestowed with “The 2000-Millennium Award” by the <strong>World</strong><strong>Renewable</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> Network (WREN) onthe occasion of the <strong>World</strong> <strong>Renewable</strong><strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> VI and in the year 2000he was also conferred with the “BestIndustrialist of 2000 MillenniumAward” by the Rural Education andDevelopment Society, Vellore, TamilNadu. In the year 2001 he was conferredwith "The Gold Medal 1999-2000" forManagement by the In<strong>di</strong>an Council ofManagement Executives (ICME),Mumbai and in 2002 he was bestowedwith “The Chairman Award for thePromotion of <strong>Renewable</strong> <strong>Energy</strong>” by the<strong>World</strong> <strong>Renewable</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> Network(WREN) on the occasion of the <strong>World</strong><strong>Renewable</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Congress</strong> VII.
