our programLa Trobe <strong>University</strong> is an internationally recogniseduniversity with a strong research and teaching focus.It has over 100 partner universities and studentexchange networks across more than 30 countries.Commencement date<strong>The</strong> organiser will determine thecommencement date depending on thenumber <strong>of</strong> enrolments for the course.Commencement is scheduled forSeptember/October each year.<strong>The</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Nursing and Midwifery<strong>of</strong> La Trobe <strong>University</strong> in Melbourne,Australia, in cooperation with <strong>The</strong> School<strong>of</strong> Continuing and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies<strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Chinese</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> Kongis <strong>of</strong>fering a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Nursing coursefor registered nurses in <strong>Hong</strong> Kong.<strong>The</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Nursing program enablesregistered nurses with a hospital certificateor diploma qualification in nursing to expandtheir pr<strong>of</strong>essional education in the disciplineto a bachelor degree.<strong>The</strong> program consists <strong>of</strong> eight subjectschosen specifically for their relevance tothe nursing pr<strong>of</strong>ession and the healthcarecontext <strong>of</strong> nursing practice in <strong>Hong</strong> Kong.Program content is up-to-date and evidencebased,and students will expand theirknowledge within the discipline <strong>of</strong> nursingand apply this to their nursing practice.<strong>The</strong> program introduces students toconcepts <strong>of</strong> how to evaluate new knowledgeto ensure their practice meets best practicestandards and provides the opportunity todevelop theoretical knowledge and practicalskills that are readily transferable into thehealthcare environment. Three main topicareas are threaded within the curriculum:clinical practice; leadership and managementand education.Graduates <strong>of</strong> the program will have astrong academic basis for further study.<strong>The</strong>y will be eligible to apply for entryinto postgraduate studies including up toMasters level.La Trobe <strong>University</strong> has <strong>of</strong>fered a nursingconversion program in <strong>Hong</strong> Kong since 1992and many <strong>of</strong> our graduates are now workingat senior positions in the health servicesindustry in <strong>Hong</strong> Kong and overseas.Course aims<strong>The</strong> broad educational aims <strong>of</strong> the programare to prepare graduates capable <strong>of</strong>:•§Providing quality individual nursing carewithin a variety <strong>of</strong> healthcare contexts•§Contributing to the development <strong>of</strong> newnursing knowledge•§Acting as agents <strong>of</strong> change for healthcarereform.At the completion <strong>of</strong> the program it isexpected that a BN graduate will be able to:•§Tailor care interventions to the needs <strong>of</strong> anindividual client and their family•§Provide quality care for clients withina variety <strong>of</strong> healthcare contexts andlocations•§Demonstrate productive, inter-pr<strong>of</strong>essionalteam capabilities•§Be able to demonstrate principles andpractices <strong>of</strong> management and leadershipincluding supervising, leading, managing,teaching and delegating to others•§Advocate for the patients in their care•§Develop self-motivated lifelong learningcapabilities and evaluate the impact <strong>of</strong>their care•§Contribute to the development <strong>of</strong> nursingknowledge via research and publication•§Critically analyses contemporaryhealthcare services and provide feasiblealternatives•§Identify strategies for changing healthcareservices to meet societal needs.<strong>The</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Nursing program is <strong>of</strong>feredin <strong>Hong</strong> Kong in collaboration with the School<strong>of</strong> Continuing and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong><strong>Chinese</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> Kong.This eight subject program is equivalent toone year full time study and will be <strong>of</strong>feredin part time mode over approximatelyeighteen months.Students will receive up to twenty hours<strong>of</strong> face to face teaching with La Trobe<strong>University</strong> Academic staff for each <strong>of</strong> theeight subjects. On-line study guides andlearning activities will be provided byLa Trobe <strong>University</strong>. Students will also receiveongoing support from both the School <strong>of</strong>Continuing and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies <strong>of</strong><strong>The</strong> <strong>Chinese</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> Kong andLa Trobe <strong>University</strong>, via an on-line LearningManagement System, throughout the course.Degree award<strong>The</strong> course is equivalent to the Bachelor<strong>of</strong> Nursing degree course conducted byLa Trobe <strong>University</strong> in Australia and studentswho successfully complete the course willreceive the same award. This course doesnot lead to registration to practice as a nursein Australia.This course is an exempted course governedby the Non-local Higher and Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalEducation (Regulation), Government <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Hong</strong> Kong Special Administrative Region(Reference No: 410280). Elements <strong>of</strong> nursing and midwiferyinquiry will include: application <strong>of</strong> researchpractice i.e. the identification <strong>of</strong> a clinicalissue or research problem, formulation <strong>of</strong>a research question or statement, researchdesign and methods.2 Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Nursing


Nursing: Health Priorities AIn this subject students will have theopportunity to extend their knowledge andskills in relation to the pathophysiology <strong>of</strong>inflammation, acute pain and cardiovascular,respiratory and endocrine disordersacross the lifespan. Students will gain acomprehensive understanding <strong>of</strong> these areasby examining the aetiology, pathophysiology,assessment, diagnostic testing(haematology, biochemistry, microbiology,medical imaging) and pharmacologyrelated to commonly encountered diseasestates. Students will be introduced to thetheoretical basis <strong>of</strong> pharmacology includingpharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamicsas well as the responsibilities and scope<strong>of</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> the registered nurse inmedication administration.Nursing: Health Priorities BStudents will have the opportunity toextend their knowledge and skills gainedin NSG2HPA, specifically in relation tothe pathophysiology <strong>of</strong> neurological,gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, renal& haematological conditions across thelifespan. Students will gain a comprehensiveunderstanding <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> these areas byexamining the aetiology, pathophysiology,assessment, diagnostic testing(haematology, biochemistry, microbiology,medical imaging) and pharmacology relatedto commonly encountered disease states.<strong>The</strong> focus will be on chronic diseases withparticular emphasis on the assessmentand patient centred nursing management,including the pharmacotherapeuticsand medication management <strong>of</strong> thoseconditions. Related concepts <strong>of</strong> chronicpain, substance abuse and the use <strong>of</strong>complementary therapies will also beexplored.Nursing Patients with Chronic IllnessThis subject builds on the knowledge gainedin previous semesters to understand, modifyand contextualise the factors impactingon health and wellbeing <strong>of</strong> individuals,families and communities. <strong>The</strong> studentswill develop an in depth understanding <strong>of</strong>factors influencing population health, thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> chronic conditions and/ordisabilities, and complex disease patterns.Implications for nursing practice within aninter-pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice environment andpublic health policy development form apivotal component <strong>of</strong> this subject.<strong>The</strong> Australian National Health’s PrioritiesAreas and the World Health Organisation’s(WHO) Priorities Areas, which includecancer, ischaemic heart disease, stroke,lung disease, diabetes and kidney disease,within a lifespan approach will be usedas a basis to identify the needs, healthchallenges and management <strong>of</strong> individuals,families and communities. A focus onculturally competent care will be integratedthroughout.Students will be required to reflect onprevious clinical experience in order t<strong>of</strong>urther develop their knowledge and skills incritical appraisal <strong>of</strong> public health literature.This includes the critical appraisal <strong>of</strong> policiesand government initiatives addressingthe health <strong>of</strong> the nation, their impact onthe individuals, and an analysis <strong>of</strong> theeffectiveness <strong>of</strong> the models <strong>of</strong> health caremanagement used in various populationgroups in <strong>Hong</strong> Kong.Other concepts addressed in this subjectinclude: family strengths assessment,health coaching, motivational interviewing,collaborative health care systems, and selfmanagementpractices. Students will have anopportunity to critically reflect and evaluatehow these skills may advance future clinicalnursing practice and deliver evidence-based,person-centered nursing care across diversepopulations.Students will be introduced to reflection onand in practice; grief and loss associatedwith chronic illness, death and dying, andadvanced care planning.Education in Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalPracticeThis subject explores the relevantfoundations and practical issues surroundingthe learning and teaching roles experiencedby the health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in the clinicalenvironment. <strong>The</strong> subject will examine thefoundations <strong>of</strong> learning and teaching anduse these to analyse the factors that canimpact on learning and teaching in thepractice <strong>of</strong> health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. <strong>The</strong> subjectwill scrutinize the learning and teachingrequirements <strong>of</strong> patients and families acrossthe lifespan as well as peers and colleagues.<strong>The</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> different learning styles onthe learning will be explored including theBachelor <strong>of</strong> Nursing3

Studentsare introduced to the law and to the notion<strong>of</strong> legal systems and will review the sources<strong>of</strong> law and learn to distinguish betweencriminal and civil law. <strong>The</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> ‘duty<strong>of</strong> care’ is explored, along with the potentialto breach that duty <strong>of</strong> care, resulting innegligence. Students will examine the legal,ethical and pr<strong>of</strong>essional responsibilities<strong>of</strong> nursing and accountability in nursingpractice.Engagement in Pr<strong>of</strong>essional NursingIn this subject students will have theopportunity to extend their knowledgeregarding the components that provide aframework for accountable and responsiblenursing practice. Students will gain acomprehensive understanding <strong>of</strong> theimportance <strong>of</strong> competency standards,decision making frameworks, direction anddelegation guidelines and the safety andquality framework in relation to pr<strong>of</strong>essionalconduct. In addition, students will beintroduced to the role <strong>of</strong> contemporarytheories <strong>of</strong> leadership and management,the concept <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional boundaries,health policy, organisational structures,organisational culture. Students willhave the opportunity for pr<strong>of</strong>essionalself-development as the importance <strong>of</strong>self-development through the concept<strong>of</strong> resilience and the advancement <strong>of</strong>therapeutic communication skills are apriority.
