CTC S13 REPLACEMENTS COUPONSby Don Bradt #150There are four different coupons foreach denomination in the CTC S13 seriesand unless you have all 20 of them, youdon’t have a complete collection. The differencesare in the serial numbers. Foreach denomination there are the followingtypes:1. Normally spaced serial numbers,2. Stretched serial numbers,3. Replacement coupons beginning withan asterisk (*),14414. Replacement coupons bearing thesame serial number as the coupon theyreplaced. The thing that probably confuses mostcollectors is the difference between 2 and4 in the above list. The Bilodeau Guide has good explanationsfor most of the CTC S13 couponsand when quoted it is the 6th edition thatthe page numbers refer to.Two CTC S13-D-ssn coupons with the best bracketting coupons I could find2The following figures will have numbersinserted (1-4) that refer to the 4 typesmentioned above.Type 1. These are the normal couponsthat make up most of the series and aredescribed in the Bilodeau Guide, VolumeI, Page B-37. The font used for the serialnumbers is the same font used by theCanadian Banknote Company for the normalcoupons in series CTC S7, S8, S9 andS13. They are catalogued as CTC S13-B,CTC S13-C, etc.CTC S13-B11Type 2. The stretched serial numbers firstappeared in the CTC S9 series. This is notjust a different spacing between the digitsof the serial number but is a different fontand hence, different numbering heads forprinting the serial numbers. If you doubtthis, look at the 10¢ CTC S9 normal andstretched coupons and you will see thatthe “B” prefix is significantly different. Inthe CTC S13 series there was a printingof coupons, probably ordered by CanadianTire in a panic, to tide them over until theywere ready to release the newly designedCTC S15 coupons. These coupons were41A CTC S13-E-ssn coupon bracketed between two normal CTC S13-E coupons

serial numbered using the “stretched”numbering heads and fall at the end ofthe S13 series. They are not replacementcoupons but merely normal coupons withstretched serial numbers. See the followinghigh/low list. They are catalogued CTCS13-B1, CTC S13-C1, etc.3The following table was producedusing information from Lou Fontaine’scombined low/high list and shows the serialnumber range for this type of coupon.Cat. The normal replacement coupons,as usual thus far with CBN (CanadianBanknote Company) have an asterisk “*”in the serial number. In the case of thisseries the serial number is preceded by anasterisk. It is interesting to note that CBNused the “stretched” numbering headsfor these replacement coupons (and alsofor the CTC S9 replacements). Thesecoupons are catalogued as CTC S13-Ba,CTC S13-Ca, etc. They are described inthe Bilodeau Guide, Vol I, pages B-38-39.Type 4. These are the tricky ones. Forsome reason, in addition to using the“*” replacement coupons, CBN decidedto replace some damaged coupons withcoupons bearing the Same Serial Number(ssn). See the Bilodeau Guide, Vol II,pages B35-38. If they hadn’t used the“stretched” numbering heads they wouldhave been undetectable. These couponsare hard to find and are catalogued asCTC S13 B-ssn, CTC S13 C-ssn, etc. Youhave to know the serial number range of 2.and eliminate them.
