Led by students, the day will be used to focus on Women in the Workplace andwill inspire our young women to change male domination in the workplace.Hornsey School is planning a day of activities with a focus on getting our young women to aspire toachieve in any career! There will be workshops and presentations from women in male dominatedcareers who will discuss what it has taken them to achieve their goals.We will be focusing on breaking the barriers down between young women and a ‘male dominatedenvironment’; with guest speakers from real women at the top of their career. There will be acareers stand for students looking for information on roles they wish to pursue, how you canachieve your dream job, even if they are not sure what it is yet.Students, have you ever wondered what a meteorologist was or how many females go intoScience, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) careers? There will be Year 11s withinteresting STEM related questions and answers, speak to them for more information. Somestudents will be dressed in work uniforms showing different careers and answering any questionsyou may have. HORNSEY STUDENTS:HARD WORK IS RECOGNISEDHaringey Council’s annual Outstanding for All Awards saw fiveHornsey students rewarded for outstanding success inside andout of the classroom!Amira Ali (right) won the Unsung Youth Award for her workraising awareness of Female Genital Mutilation in the localcommunity.Nimra Butt (bottom right) was given the Overcoming AdversityAward for her amazing GCSE exam results despite having a visualimpairment.Isatou Cates and Shanjida Ahad were presented withOutstanding Academic Achievement Awards and Tiana Chung-Taylor won Haringey’s Young Carer of the Year Award.A special mention must go to Hornsey studentMoressa Chambers (top left) who impressivelyco-presented the award ceremony.

As part of Hornsey School for Girls’ fight to end Female Genital Mutilation, we are proud tohost the Haringey Conference: Working Together to End FGM.The conference wil take part on Tuesday 17th February, from 10am - 3pm, and will bringtogether all of the work that has taken place over recent years to raise awareness of FGM andto support and protect vulnerable women and girls. It will enable further discussions about anintegrated approach to tackling and ending FGM. This year English teacher MsBoardman was among twelve people given theaward after being nominated by a formerstudent, Holly Harrison-Mullane.Holly said:“Ms Boardman was the best teacher I ever had.Her English class had everyone really interestedin the subject and excited to study more. Shealso really helped us all feel much moreconfident about applying for university andmade going to Oxford feel like an achievablegoal”.Ms Boardman, who will attend the awardceremony in May said:“I am very honoured to have been nominatedfor this award and am even more surprised tohave actually won. Thank you Holly, thank youOxford and thank you to all the wonderfulteachers and pupils who have inspired me”.Ms Ongley, Deputy Head of Dance, has beennominated for two awards for her work withthe Sky Sports Living for Sports programme.Her nominations are for Teacher of the Yearand Project of the Year 2013/14. We wish herlots of luck and congratulations for hernominations.Ms Wiggins, Head of Social Sciences, wasinvited to give lecture at the Institute ofEducation (UCL) last week. She delivered asession on 'Delivering Excellent PSHE Lessons'to trainee Social Sciences teachers.

Congratulations to Year 13 student Matilda Tempestwho has earned a place at Oxford University inSeptember to read Politics, Philosophy andEconomics.This year more than 17,000 people applied for just3,000 places at the university. Matilda was supportedat Hornsey by The Access Project, the Sutton TrustSummer School (The University of Oxford's UNIQ)and the RATU project (Raising Aspirations andApplications to Top Universities).In December, a group of Year 10 ASSociology and Year 13 BTEC Health & SocialCare students visited the V&A ChildhoodMuseum. Here they took part in aworkshop called “The Social Constructionof Childhood”. The workshop shows howchildren develop their sense of identitythrough play and how toys have changedover time to reflect this. Students had agreat time exploring the museum, playingwith toys and taking part in the workshop.We wish Matilda every success in her studies.Peer Mentoring support at Hornsey School for Girlsis a long and well established provision which hasbeen recognised following recent accreditation fromthe Mentoring & Befriending Foundation (MBF).The foundation provides services which aim toincrease the effectiveness and quality of mentoring,enabling students to transform their lives and reachtheir full potential. For the 2014-15 Coca-Cola Real BusinessChallenge, students were asked to create asoft drink product and packaging to raisemoney for athletes to go to the 2015 SpecialOlympics in Los Angeles.Year 9 students formed teams in their ProductDesign classes. They experimented withflavour combinations, created a finance andmarketing plan alongside their designs andbranding of their idea. Votes were cast inclass and each group were scored to find thebest idea to send off to Coca-Cola for judging.All groups were very creative, however theentry requirements were best met by teamCOLD. 9,000 students from London enteredthe challenge and COLD did extremely well tothen be selected for the London final by Coca-Cola.left the event feeling very fortunate for theexperience they had been given and elated byhow well they had been treated during theday.A big congratulations to all the students thatattended: Sara Abdalla, Mae Parker-Barnby,Shayma Abdulkadir, Wiktoria Popiel, RiaMolloy, Lucy Hodge-Sellers, Shaziya Begum,Sara Abdalla.“The fundamental idea of the projectis for students to improve theiremployability profile and develop lifeskills with a live project. The 10 Londonschool team finalists were given a furtherchallenge to create a social media plan, learnApp design, create a bus stop poster and carryout event planning including financialforecasting. Each team had a business mentorfrom Coca-Cola working with them to supporttheir efforts. Calves, a mobile application(App) design company, held a workshop indeveloping Apps for phones and tablets whichwas brilliant.After working hard all day the teams wereeach asked to present their work to a judgingpanel from Coca-Cola who picked a winner.Although we did not win this time, thestudents had an amazing experience and evenhad a working lunch! They showed greateffort throughout the day and were treatedvery well with drinks, cakes, pastries andchocolates at regular points in the day. They
