The centerwill be used by all students and enhancethe school’s preeminent Project Lead theWay curriculum for engineering and biomedicalsciences. With the growing appealof STEMM in the Dayton region,the Center is expected to attract evenmore students to the excellent, holisticCatholic educational experience thatCJ offers.The funded renovation, with an expectedbudget of nearly $4 million, will transform10 current classrooms and labs intoWINTER 2013 8On January 9, Dan Meixner ‘84,president, along with Jeff Cox,board chairman, announcedplans to transform 10 classroomsand labs into the CJ STEMMCenter. The almost $4 millionproject is funded through giftsfrom nearly 30 members of theCJ community.a state-of-the-art center featuring expandedlearning spaces, innovation labs withproject areas, a fabrication shop, teacherprep areas, and a distance learning center.Students will experience the same kindof facilities, technology and collaborativemethods that they will use in college.“The CJ STEMM Center will match thevibrancy of our teachers and creativity ofour students,” said Dan Meixner ‘84, CJpresident. “It will meet the demands ofour four-year engineering and biomedicalprograms and will allow teachers theflexibility to more fully implement today’sstyles of teaching which have evolvedfrom when our buildings were firstconstructed.”The renovation represents the first majorconstruction to the school buildingin over 50 years. The school Boardof Trustees asked that plans be draftedfor the center after a 2009 facilities auditdetermined that the existing buildingswere strong enough to support a renovationof this magnitude. Once the scope ofwork was determined, and funds for theproject were secured, the board approvedmoving forward with construction.“Together, we are accomplishing greatthings for our students. We are positioning ourselves (facilities, teachers, students, technology)to effectively collaborate with professionals, businesses, colleges anduniversities. The center will provide state-of-the-art teaching and learning experiencesthat will fully support inquiry-based team and innovative project work.We are not out to convince every CJ student to pursue a STEMM collegeprogram or career, but we do intend for all students to be exposed to an evengreater variety of STEMM opportunities, and learn the value of being inquisitive,creative and bold in proposing innovative, out-of-the-box solutions to problemsthey identify. While STEMM-based learning can be applied to everyday life, it ispowerful enough to impact our world in tremendous ways.CJ chose Project Lead the Way because it was, and still remains, the prominenthigh school STEMM curriculum recognized and accepted in Ohio and nationwide.CJ recognized the advantage of offering the biomedical sciences programin addition to the engineering program, since each attracts a different type ofstudent. Together, they offer CJ another valuable opportunity to integrate ourCatholic faith and Marianist and Notre Dame traditions into what we teach.“The flexible lab-classroom hybrids allow for increased student-student and studentteacherinteraction.
