The centerwill be used by all students and enhancethe school’s preem<strong>in</strong>ent Project Lead theWay curriculum for eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and biomedicalsciences. With the grow<strong>in</strong>g appealof <strong>STEMM</strong> <strong>in</strong> the Day<strong>to</strong>n region,the <strong>Center</strong> is expected <strong>to</strong> attract evenmore students <strong>to</strong> the excellent, holisticCatholic educational experience that<strong>CJ</strong> offers.The funded renovation, with an expectedbudget of nearly $4 million, will transform10 current classrooms and labs <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><strong>WINTER</strong> <strong>2013</strong> 8On January 9, Dan Meixner ‘84,president, along with Jeff Cox,board chairman, announcedplans <strong>to</strong> transform 10 classroomsand labs <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the <strong>CJ</strong> <strong>STEMM</strong><strong>Center</strong>. The almost $4 millionproject is funded through giftsfrom nearly 30 members of the<strong>CJ</strong> community.a state-of-the-art center featur<strong>in</strong>g expandedlearn<strong>in</strong>g spaces, <strong>in</strong>novation labs withproject areas, a fabrication shop, teacherprep areas, and a distance learn<strong>in</strong>g center.Students will experience the same k<strong>in</strong>dof facilities, technology and collaborativemethods that they will use <strong>in</strong> college.“The <strong>CJ</strong> <strong>STEMM</strong> <strong>Center</strong> will match thevibrancy of our teachers and creativity ofour students,” said Dan Meixner ‘84, <strong>CJ</strong>president. “It will meet the demands ofour four-year eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and biomedicalprograms and will allow teachers theflexibility <strong>to</strong> more fully implement <strong>to</strong>day’sstyles of teach<strong>in</strong>g which have evolvedfrom when our build<strong>in</strong>gs were firstconstructed.”The renovation represents the first majorconstruction <strong>to</strong> the school build<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong> over 50 years. The school Boardof Trustees asked that plans be draftedfor the center after a 2009 facilities auditdeterm<strong>in</strong>ed that the exist<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>gswere strong enough <strong>to</strong> support a renovationof this magnitude. Once the scope ofwork was determ<strong>in</strong>ed, and funds for theproject were secured, the board approvedmov<strong>in</strong>g forward with construction.“Together, we are accomplish<strong>in</strong>g greatth<strong>in</strong>gs for our students.
