100 Years Ago at Frankl<strong>in</strong> & Ludlow StreetsThe Great Day<strong>to</strong>n Flood of 1913The s<strong>to</strong>ry of the flood has been preserved, and is re<strong>to</strong>ld here, through resourcesavailable from the Day<strong>to</strong>n Metro Library’s “Day<strong>to</strong>n Remembers: Preserv<strong>in</strong>g theHis<strong>to</strong>ry of the Miami Valley” collection, and a handwritten accountfrom the Notre Dame Academy Archives.Flood<strong>in</strong>g began Easter Sunday, March23, 1913, when s<strong>to</strong>rm clouds convergedover the Miami Valley, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>to</strong>11 <strong>in</strong>ches of precipitation dur<strong>in</strong>g a fivedayperiod. Hav<strong>in</strong>g thawed from its w<strong>in</strong>terfreeze, the saturated ground <strong>in</strong> earlyspr<strong>in</strong>g could not hold the excess water.Instead, runoff filled the Great Miami,Mad and Stillwater Rivers and surround<strong>in</strong>gtributaries beyond capacity.Heavy showers Monday caused levees <strong>to</strong>fail early Tuesday morn<strong>in</strong>g, allow<strong>in</strong>g theforce of an estimated four trillion gallonsof water <strong>to</strong> rush <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> down<strong>to</strong>wn. Itwas reported that the amount roughlyequalled the volume of water that passesover Niagara Falls <strong>in</strong> 30 days time, and14 square miles of Day<strong>to</strong>n were covered.The Sisters at Notre Dame Academy,located at Frankl<strong>in</strong> and Ludlow Streets,were left stranded <strong>in</strong> the heart of the devastation.Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g at 5:25 that morn<strong>in</strong>g,one sister scribed journal entries detail<strong>in</strong>gthe disastrous events.“The water forced its way <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the basementwith the roar of Niagara, and wehurried <strong>to</strong> the next floor, <strong>to</strong> remove furniture<strong>to</strong> a place of safety,” she wrote. In thehours that followed, a fiery explosion isdocumented on Wash<strong>in</strong>g<strong>to</strong>n Street andthe 12-foot wall surround<strong>in</strong>g the conventis said <strong>to</strong> succumb <strong>to</strong> the flood.Waters were reported <strong>to</strong> crest 10 <strong>to</strong>12 feet above ground level, reach<strong>in</strong>g ashigh as 20 feet <strong>in</strong> places of lower elevation.Gas ma<strong>in</strong> leaks fueled fires that de-stroyed other parts of the city. TheSisters who were penn<strong>in</strong>g the journalwere advised <strong>to</strong> put out their lights<strong>to</strong> avoid a similar fate. Before nightfall,the current is recorded at 50 milesan hour and a boat carry<strong>in</strong>g five is witnessed<strong>to</strong> capsize on Frankl<strong>in</strong> Streetnear Emmanuel Church.“Water rose steadily until one o’clockbut contrary <strong>to</strong> expectation, when its<strong>to</strong>pped ris<strong>in</strong>g it did not beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> godown. [...]Away over the hill the electriclights from St. Mary College and fromthe National Cash Register (NCR)only made the darkness over the strickencity darker still. The ra<strong>in</strong> poured;w<strong>in</strong>d blew; cold <strong>in</strong>tensified; the wearyhours wore away.”“Fr. Kassmann said: ‘Sisters, this bless<strong>in</strong>g now is for you.’We could not see him, the darkness was <strong>in</strong>tense. Shortly after this weheard explosions and saw fire on Third Street. This lighted up the roomand the silent Tabernacle became visible.”— SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR, NOTRE DAME ACADEMYThe Marianists and citizens unaffectedby flood waters at St. Mary (laterrenamed the University of Day<strong>to</strong>n <strong>in</strong>1920) and NCR ramped up relief efforts,build<strong>in</strong>g boats <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> rescueand supply food, and provid<strong>in</strong>g shelterfor the displaced. On Wednesday,Gov. James M. Cox declared a state ofemergency, plac<strong>in</strong>g Day<strong>to</strong>n under martiallaw (an order that would last approximatelyone month) and call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>the Ohio National Guard. Cox wouldeventually appo<strong>in</strong>t NCR PresidentJohn H. Rev.Father Bernard O’Reilly, president ofSt. Mary’s, is quoted <strong>to</strong> have taken <strong>in</strong> 520at his board<strong>in</strong>g school where students’Easter break allowed for extra vacancy.“Thursday, [March] 27. All day thewaters kept go<strong>in</strong>g down slowly. TheThermometer [sic] registered 45 dg [sic].In the rooms, the corridors were evencolder. That day we helped ourselves <strong>to</strong>the little food that was left. In the morn<strong>in</strong>gwe had puffed rice and ra<strong>in</strong> water,”the Sister’s entry described. By3 p.m., the National Guard had reachedthe iconic red brick build<strong>in</strong>g by boat <strong>in</strong>water now “only six feet [deep] <strong>in</strong>the streets.”A message sent from the Sisters <strong>to</strong> Fr.O’Reilly elicited a delivery of ham sandwichesand bottled water <strong>in</strong> reply fromthe Marianists Friday morn<strong>in</strong>g afterra<strong>in</strong> and snowfall ceased. These provisionswere followed by another deliveryof bread and water. With supplies be<strong>in</strong>gdelivered and floodwaters reced<strong>in</strong>g, the<strong>WINTER</strong> <strong>2013</strong> 6
