I regret not being ableto play football due to injury; I loved following sports andwas proud of our teams.Motivation as a student:My parents adopted me and I was their only child. Myfather never had the chance to go to school and I feltlucky to be able to do so. He never put pressure on meto do well, but I felt like I had to; I just knew that he wascounting on it.Mentor:Bro. Janning was a missionary in China and survived living through the Mao Regime. Though amath teacher, he instilled in us his philosophy on life. Stories about his work in China caused us tothink about the important things in life and not to take blessings for granted. Bro. Zahn graduatedfrom Case Institute. This extremely intelligent man could have worked for any top nationalinstitution, and he chose to teach at Chaminade. He gave daily quizzes and returned each within- depth notes. Many in that class went on to become medical doctors or PhD’s in science.Chaminade:The technical quality of the classes was amazing. You knew that this caliber of outstandingeducation was only available in the elite high schools in the country — I was lucky to go. Mywork in college was made easier because of the rigor of courses and study habits I had learned.A favorite memory:It was the first day of chemistry class in one of the top floor classrooms. Our teacher, Bro. Geary, had a big iron pot on his desk. The minute he finished calling roll, the contents of the potexploded with a large blast. He caught our attention, which was the point.Advice to current students:Do more than just casual thinking about what you want to do with your life. Take the mostadvanced courses that you are qualified to take; include a broad base in science; and learnanother modern language. Finally, talk to people who are successful in what it is you want to do.Chris Poelking ‘10Involvement at CJ:NHS; Football; Baseball (captain); Eagle Ambassador;State Science Fair.I knew that I would be involved in sports, but I neverexpected to help recruit incoming freshmen to CJ as anambassador. I enjoyed the opportunity to talk aboutmy school from a completely different perspective.Motivation as a student:I wanted to have a good life after I completed my education— that meant working hard at CJ to have moreopportunities in college. My parents never told me totry and get the best grades, but they did want me to dothe best that I could, and have fun at the same time.Mentor:All of my coaches influenced me including Coach Colvin who taught us the importance ofbeing a good person on and off the field. Mrs. Eloe encouraged us to study hard, do well, and work with each other to accomplish greater things. During my first year in college, Iemailed her a question about math. Not only did she give me advice, but she remindedme that I could do great things in this world. She has given me confidence in myself as astudent and person.Chaminade Julienne:Teachers stressed being members of a community. It prepared me to be a better personwhich I carried outside of school. There are issues of fitting in wherever you go. CJ gaveme confidence to be myself . I have grown very comfortable being me.A favorite memory:Teachers love bringing technology into the classroom. One of my favorite memories waswhen Mr. Kassner played the hit sci-fi movie, “Avatar” for all our physics class. Then hechallenged us to tie physics-related topics to the contents of the movie.Advice to current students:Work hard and do your best, but don’t make grades your priority. Take advantage of newopportunities when you can. Have fun and enjoy the moment. The people you meet andthe knowledge you absorb will always stick with you.Aspiration:I always dreamed of being a cowboy, so I bought a ranch, and that’s what I do!
