OBJECTIVE 4<br />

To provide secure and suitable facilities, which are readily accessible to the public, for<br />

the preservation and exhibition <strong>of</strong> the national collections.<br />

Strategy 1<br />

Safeguard the collections and works <strong>of</strong> art entrusted to the<br />

<strong>Gallery</strong>, and ensure a safe environment for staff and visitors.<br />

Results<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> implemented new security-clearance processes and<br />

regular security audits, in keeping with recommendations outlined<br />

in the Government’s post-September 11th security-policy review.<br />

• The installation <strong>of</strong> exterior security cameras was completed as<br />

planned.<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> completed a major review <strong>of</strong> the protection <strong>of</strong> works<br />

in the galleries, and <strong>of</strong> security for both the premises and collections<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Library and Archives, and implemented several<br />

refinements.<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> revised its Crisis Response Plan, held training sessions<br />

on the Plan for all staff assigned a direct role in a crisis situation,<br />

and carried out a <strong>Gallery</strong>-wide bomb-threat exercise to test one<br />

component <strong>of</strong> the Plan.<br />

Strategy 2<br />

Ensure the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s staff, collections, programming, and<br />

administrative functions are housed in suitable facilities<br />

that are readily accessible to the public.<br />

Results<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> undertook, through a consultant, a study <strong>of</strong> both the<br />

<strong>Gallery</strong> and CMCP space requirements, and initiated discussions<br />

with government <strong>of</strong>ficials on the need to expand the <strong>Gallery</strong>’s<br />

public programming, educational, and storage spaces.<br />

• Phase IV and V <strong>of</strong> the ro<strong>of</strong> replacement work was completed in<br />

November 2002.<br />

• The Halon fire retardant system was replaced, and the CMCP<br />

energy conservation retr<strong>of</strong>it project was completed by end <strong>of</strong><br />

March 2003.<br />

• The structural repairs to the garage were started only in March<br />

because <strong>of</strong> unusually cold weather. Phase I and II will be completed<br />

in 2003–04, and the final two phases will be completed by<br />

2005–06.<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> continues to investigate options for the elevator-control<br />

upgrade.<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> made its facilities more accessible to people with disabilities<br />

by automating the Tour Group entrance doors, automating<br />

the north-facing front entrance doors, and upgrading all ramps<br />

and handrails to code.<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> retendered the groundskeeping contract.<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> initiated replacement <strong>of</strong> the windows linking the<br />

Curatorial Wing and <strong>Gallery</strong> building.<br />

• The <strong>Gallery</strong> extended its contract with its existing private sector<br />

food-services provider. It will be issuing a request for proposals<br />

for the services at the end <strong>of</strong> 2003.
