Summer 2008
2008 Commencement
For Riverfield’s seven graduates, the night of May 16 th was one they will remember forever: Upper
School Commencement. Kerri Linde, much-loved faculty member who moved to Oregon in 2007,
returned to share fond memories and give encouragement to the graduates. “ I was privileged to be
part of the lives of these seniors for the two and a half years I was here. I will forever be thankful
that these seven students shared this time in their lives with me. They are powerful beyond
measure and I love and respect them and wish the best for them”.
Congrats to Riverfield’s 2 nd graduating class. Graduates include Steven McCommas, Edward Aaron
Thomas, Kaitlyn Marie Cox, Taylor Edwin Stevak, Ellen Fizer, Rusty Scott, and Robert A. May. It
was a momentous evening for the graduates, their families, and the RCDS staff and students.

MISSION
STATEMENT
The mission of
Riverfield Country
Day School is to
provide an excel-
lent education in a
family-oriented
atmosphere.
Students are moti-
vated and encour-
aged to learn,
develop, and
mature in a re-
spectful, secure,
and diverse envi-
ronment. A caring,
creative faculty and
a challenging,
integrated, and
personalized cur-
riculum promote
the development of
the whole student
as a confident and
responsible learner
prepared for real
world success.
From Marty Clark,
HEAD OF SCHOOL
Perhaps more than any other season, spring is a time full of traditions at
Riverfield. You will read about many on the following pages, from Legacy to
Academic Bowl Tournaments, and from Move Up Day to Earth Day/Field Day
activities. We also celebrated the 8th Grade Closing Exercises and are eager
to welcome back our largest incoming freshman class next fall. As one eighth
grader said, “I think that Riverfield is the best choice for high school in the
Tulsa area. You get the best of both worlds, the casual atmosphere of a
public school and the high standards of a private school.” As we draw closer
to beginning our 25 th year, these traditions continue to hold a special place in
all of our hearts.
But with experience and growth comes change. It is heart-warming to watch
relatively new endeavors like Empty Bowls and Street Party become new
traditions. And one very special new tradition at Riverfield is the Upper School
Commencement. We were proud to watch seven graduates (a 350% increase
from last year’s two grads) walk across the stage to accept their diplomas on
Friday, May 16 th . As you will see on the facing page, these newly-minted
alums are taking what they’ve learned at Riverfield and moving on to various
colleges and universities in the fall. Way to go, Graduates; and be sure to
stay in touch!!
This spring also brought new and fresh ideas to campus. From Kindergarten
to Upper School, students discussed, researched, and worked on projects
that would enable the RCDS community to be more environmentally conscious.
Also, teachers allowed student interest and investigation to guide the
curriculum – a concept that has been practiced regularly in the Pre-School
and is emphasized by Roots and Shoots students as well as the Science
classes.
As I reflect on the past, I think of the families with whom I have come in
contact over the last 24 years. Though I run into them frequently at the grocery
store or at civic events, I would love to get them all in one place at one time.
Hence, Riverfield is hosting a 25 th Year Kick-Off Celebration at 5pm on August
1, 2008. We encourage as many families as possible to attend, so please
mark the date on your calendar and RSVP by July 25th to frontdesk@riverfield.org.
STUDY OF THE
ELECTION PROCESS
Mr. Morton used the current
presidential campaign as an
impetus for class dialogue and
research with his US History students.
He noted, “Politics have dominated both
discussion and written projects this
quarter.” Students were assigned to
research the Electoral College and how
it was formed, as well as outlining the
pros and cons of such a system. One
issue in the election is relationships with
Middle Eastern countries, which was the
focus of the last weeks of school.
Students selected a Middle Eastern
country and, after researching, presented
oral reports on governmental forms found
in these areas.
A BUS THAT RUNS ON VEGETABLE OIL?!?
Upper School Technology and Chemistry students joined forces this spring as
gas prices and alternative fuel sources were hot topics in class. Mr. Breig and
Mr. Jones encouraged the students to follow their own curiosity about alternative
fuel and offered guidance when the students expressed interest in making
biodiesel. Students researched how to create this alternative fuel and discovered
that waste vegetable oil (WVO) is a biodiesel that runs in engines that are
already in most diesel vehicles, so there’s no conversion cost. Mr. Breig said,
“This project really captured the students’ interest so we adjusted the rest of our
planned curriculum around this study. The intent was to fill a Riverfield bus with
the biodiesel and take it for a test run, but we simply ran out of time.” Both
teachers thoroughly enjoyed this study and look forward to pursuing other “green”
topics in the future.
TRIBAL ART MASKS & FIGURINES
Art students in Mr. DeVerges’ Art elective
continued their study of tribal arts, designs,
and motifs with research and construction
of masks and figurative sculptures. These
multi-media pieces incorporated found
objects, wood, and metal and were displayed
in the Upper School upon completion.
IDEPENDENT READING LIST
Book Club ensures that 6th - 8th graders read broadly and eclectically. This love of
reading continues in Upper School, as this year’s Freshmen and Sophomores showed.
Twenty freshmen completed and reported on a total of 98 independent books during the
year; 16 sophomores completed 100. That’s an average of 5.5 books per student, in
addition to the literature assigned to the whole class. The list of titles below demonstrate
that individual reading is alive and well at Riverfield Upper School.
The Book Thief, Durable Goods, Joy School, 1984, Animal Farm, I Am the Messenger,
Night, The Kite Runner, The Great Gatsby, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Ender’s
Game, The Secret Life of Bees, Jane Eyre, Gulliver’s Travels, The Pigman, The Lord of
the Flies, Marley and Me, What Girls Learn, David Copperfield, Ella Minnow Pea, The
Scarlet Letter, The Red Badge of Courage, Dandelion Wine, A Thief in Time, Mama’s
Girl, Iron and Silk, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, This Boy’s Life, The House on
Mango Street, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, A Tree Grows in
Brooklyn, A Clockwork Orange, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Once Upon a Time
When We Were Colored, and many other diverse titles.

ACADEMIC BOWL SUCCESS
Riverfield had Academic Bowl Teams qualify
for the State tournament in each division
this spring. Tournament dates varied based
on grade division, and were held on OU’s
Norman campus. The 5 th /6 th grade team
and their coaches, Miss Wynn and Ms.
Hickman, earned the 2 nd place spot in their
tournament. The 6 th /7 th grade team,
coached by Herr Clark also placed 2 nd .
Coach Lackey helped lead the 7 th /8 th grade
teams to the tourney, where Team A was
eliminated in the third round and Team B
earned a 3 rd place spot. And coming in on
top of all other 8 th /9 th grade teams,
Riverfield’s Ravens, coached by Mrs.
Jacobs, defeated longtime rival, Oolagah,
to become 2008 State Champions!
MIDDLE SCHOOL
LEGACY
What was educational and fun, with swords,
maidens, and dragons galore?? This year’s
Legacy. The focus of this project was the
Medieval era. While the study culminated
with the event on May 13 th , learning about
the time period, preparing replicas of items
used in Medieval times, and presenting
reports occurred in Social Studies and other
classes throughout the fourth quarter. Mrs.
Maxey was very pleased with the teamwork
and leadership displayed by the 8 th graders
as they led 6 th and 7 th grade students to
determine activities, assign duties, and
prepare materials for Legacy. Proceeds
from the event help offset costs of next year’s
6 th – 8 th grade Museum Trip to Kansas City.
The students decided they would like to
share some of the profit with classmate
Molly Monroe’s extended family, who was
devastated by tornadoes that hit their
Missouri town in May 2008.
NJHS
Congratulations to the newest members of
the Riverfield Blue Ravens National Junior
Honor Society. These students were inducted
into the NJHS and honored at a reception
on May 6, 2008. Their selection
was based upon careful consideration of the
five ideals of scholarship, leadership, service,
citizenship, and character.
DALLAS TRIP
Sixth through eighth graders traveled to
Dallas in April for their annual Museum
Trip. Coordinated by Mr. Liggett, Mr.
DeVerges, and Mrs. Maxey, the trip
included visits to the Sixth Floor Museum
at the Texas School Book Depository, the
Dallas Museum of Art, The Nasher
Sculpture Garden, and the Modern Art
Museum of Fort Worth. More light-hearted
activities included dinner at The Purple
Cow and, of course, the bus rides to and
from Texas. Garrett Pugh, 6 th grader, said,
“I really enjoyed the Martin Puryear exhibit,
especially The Ladder.” Costs of the trip
are offset each year by funds raised at the
previous year’s Legacy event.
GRAPHING
PROJECT
At Riverfield, Math
teachers strive to put
concepts into concrete
forms as a way of increasing
understanding. As part of a study on
graphing and data collection, 4 th and 5 th
grade students decided on a question
they would ask, collected that data
through asking survey questions, and
presented their findings in a line, bar, or
circle graph that was graded on accuracy,
labeling, neatness, and summary
paragraph. Ms. Pendleton commented,
“The project was fun for the students to
conduct and fun for their classmates to
review.” Some examples of topics
included school commute times, favorite
candy bars, people who dress up their
dogs, and favorite presidential candidates.

PRIMARY SCHOOL
LAND RUN REENACTMENT
The reenactment of Oklahoma’s Land Run
is a fun, bi-annual event at Riverfield. The
Land Run was the final activity of a unit on
Oklahoma history. It held significant
meaning this year as the school
celebrated Oklahoma’s Centennial in the
fall. The RCDS Land Run took place on
the afternoon of April 25 th and included
staking territory claims, a picnic lunch,
and activities from that time period such
as bartering and historically accurate
games.
MATH CONSULTANT
San Francisco-based math consultant,
Peggy McLean, spent two days working
with Riverfield Primary School teachers this
semester. Her focus was guiding teachers
to use manipulatives in helping students
of all ability levels grasp mathematic
concepts. Teachers in both the K-1 and
2 nd /3 rd grade wings agreed that the time
spent with Ms. McLean was very
worthwhile and they are looking forward to
implementing new ideas and strategies
next school year. Ms. McLean also
enjoyed her time at Riverfield, “It was the
class size, caring teachers, peaceful
environment, and excellent listening and
participation by all students that makes
me want to return.” The teachers wish to
thank the parent volunteers who spent time
in the classroom, enabling all K-3 rd
teachers to participate in the workshop.
BONES AND STONES
Did you know that many sorts of prehistoric
bones and fossils can be found in
Oklahoma’s own Arkansas River? Riverfield
parent, Fred Pace, collects such items and
brought an assortment to share with
Riverfield students the last week of school.
He called the display “Bones and Stones”.
Two of Mr. Pace’s friends joined him in
featuring their collections of arrowheads,
bones from wooly mammoths and
mastodons, and other period discoveries.
5
END-OF-YEAR FIELD TRIPS
Several Primary school studies were
enhanced this spring with field trips to
correlating places. For example, 2 nd /3 rd
graders visited Chimi’s with Señora Phillips,
where they ordered and conversed only in
Spanish. K-1 students traveled to the Tulsa
Zoo and the Oklahoma Aquarium as part of
their study on animals and sea life. Ms.
Naifeh said, “Field trips allow students to
gain further understanding of ideas and
concepts learned in the classroom. Plus
they are always a nice change of pace for
the students and the teachers.”
Earth Day is acknowledged each April, and although Riverfield works to be
environmentally friendly year-round, Earth Day is an opportunity to further educate
and raise awareness about taking care of the planet. K-1 classes brought bags and
traveled across campus, picking up trash. Mrs. Coutant said, “The
students enjoyed being out in the fresh air and we all felt it was
worthwhile to help put trash in its proper place and beautify our
campus.” The 2 nd /3 rd graders got creative with their Earth Day
reminders. Each created an Earth-friendly slogan and
designed a T-shirt based on the slogan’s message.

CULMINATING EVENTS
Many Pre-School classes celebrate the end of the year by inviting family members
to participate in a special activity. These culminating events represent an investigation
or project the class has enjoyed throughout the school year. Following are two
examples of Pre-School Culminating Events.
-SQUIRREL
The Squirrel class celebrated the end of the year with a Gallery Walk in their
classroom. Families were invited to take a classroom tour of pictures taken by the
children of their investigations and discoveries. Photos included a picture of a
child’s own hand and a self-portrait in the mirror under the loft. The class and
visiting families enjoyed a variety of cookies and pink punch following their tour.
The classroom’s photo book included the pictures displayed in the tour as well as
ones made as a group.
-PURPLE
The Purple class held a special scavenger hunt with families and friends in late
spring. Clues led them around campus to familiar spots where they had particpated
in activities throughout the year. They worked with clay in the woods, dug for
treasures in the sandpit, and built with reclaimed materials in the Purple class
courtyard. They also made a special wire hanging for their teacher Ms. Coulter to
take to her new classroom. After the hunt, they had a snack, watched the Art Car
Parade, and then went to Legacy. What a fun day!
BLUE CLASS GARDEN
A fairly new tradition in the Pre-School is the
investigation book that teachers create to
commemorate a special interest of the class
during the school year. Examples include
sound discoveries in the Butterfly Class,
construction in the Rabbit Class, and Climber
the hamster in the Red Class.
The Blue class book told the story of their yearlong
garden project and followed the children’s
steps from creating a worm bin for good soil, planting their items,
attempting to keep birds out of the garden, and the sketching of a
scarecrow that was rendered in metal by Tulsa’s Garden Deva.
Each phase used children’s creativity, communication, decisionmaking,
and cooperation skills. Early this summer, the Blue class
was proud to invite family members to their farmer’s market, where
they sold the flowers, herbs, and vegetables from their garden.
PRE - SCHOOL
VISITOR COMING FROM REGGIO
EMILIA, ITALY
As part of the preparation for Riverfield
hosting The Wonder of Learning: The
Hundred Languages of Children Exhibit in
January 2009, Riverfield is opening its doors
to Ms. Amelia Gambetti from Reggio Emilia,
Italy on July 5 th . Ms. Gambetti is the liaison
between Reggio Children’s Organization and
schools in the United States. She will be
visiting the Pre-School classrooms, working
with teachers and Wing Coordinators, and
touring possible Tulsa site locations for the
exhibit. Pre-School Coordinators Kacey
Davenport and Jennifer Kesselring said,
“Amelia’s visit to Riverfield is an incredible
honor. Her input and analysis will further
support and advance our thinking and best
practices in early childhood education. It
will help us put our best foot forward for the
exhibit next year as guests from across the
world visit Riverfield.” As the exhibit date
draws near, there will be many opportunities
for families to volunteer their time. If you
are interested in helping, please contact any
member of the Pre-School faculty.
NAEYC UPDATE
Candidacy material for the self-study
for Pre-School re-accreditation has
been submitted. The next step will be
a visit from the National Association
for Education of Young Children
(NAEYC) that will occur by the end of
November. This is part of the NAEYC
accredition process required of the
school every five years.

HAPPENINGS
Middle School/Upper School Drama
“Middle and Upper School Drama presentations this quarter were
outstanding,” said Mrs. Long, Drama teacher. “The students continued
to dig in and really work to hone their acting chops.” These “chops”
were displayed in the Middle School’s Laugh It Up – A Night of Improv
on April 22 nd . Drama students from 6 th – 8 th grade did several sketches
and improvisational acts, and even included audience members in the
performances. In a Riverfield first, Upper School Drama Classes A
and B performed in a true stage environment at Webster High School’s
PAC on May 8 th and 9 th , respectively. These students spent the
semester studying Neil Simon’s works and performed The Odd Couple
and Rumors to rave reviews. Enrollment for Drama next year looks
great, so the Riverfield community will have more fabulous theatrical
performances to enjoy in 2008-09. Mrs. Long will also be offering
extra classes for Pre-School and Primary School students as an
optional after school choice next fall.
F ield Day/Earth Day
Relay races, recycling sorting, and other events dotted the back field of
RCDS on April 18 th as students of all age levels participated in Field
Day/Earth Day activities. Students were divided into cross-divisional
blue, green and white teams with competitions for individuals, small
groups, and the entire team. Coordinated by Mrs. O’Halloran and Mr.
Goettel, the event is always a favorite.
E mpty Bowls
On April 4 th , Riverfield families gathered for the 2 nd annual Empty Bowls
Dinner. With soups provided by parents and staff members, bread donated
by Panera Bread, and dessert donated by Lyn Martin of Gourmet On the
Go, the evening raised $1600, with proceeds benefiting the Community
Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. Most of the money came from the
silent auction of the hand painted bowls designed by students, parents,
and faculty of Riverfield. Special guest author/illustrator Kim Doner spoke
about her travels to Africa and the hunger she saw abroad. She also
signed advanced copies of her book On a Road in Africa. Empty Bowls
is organized by the Diversity Committee. Thanks to committee members
for their hard work to make the evening a success.
C osi Nights
A new addition to the Riverfield calendar this spring was a monthly Cosi
Night. Owned and operated by the Wilburns, Molly Monroe’s family,
Cosi opened in July 2007 and partnered with Riverfield beginning in March.
On designated Cosi Nights, students, staff, and their families were
encouraged to eat at Cosi, located near 71 st and Yale. A generous portion
of the profits from those evenings were donated to Riverfield. A big “Thank
You” to the Wilburns for their support and for creating a fun time for all.
A rt Box Car Parade
S treet Party
HAPPENINGS
For the third year, Riverfield’s art students have participated in the Art BoxCar
Parade as a kick off for Legacy. Kindergarten – 5 th grade students brought
cardboard boxes from home and spent a majority of the quarter working on
their Art BoxCar creations. On May 13 th , students paraded from the back
field, up to the front circle of the main driveway, entertaining Pre-Schoolers,
parents, and teachers as they went. Various themes were used, from
political campaigning to animals, from military personnel to superheroes.
This year a new dimension was added – an act that the participants from
each car performed in the front circle drive. Thanks to Mr. Liggett for bringing
the fun of the Art BoxCar to RCDS!
May 3 rd was a rockin’ night at RCDS. Nine bands played at the 3 rd Annual
Riverfield Rocks Street Party outside the Upper School building. Mr. Knight
directed all of the bands; 5 of the 9 were composed exclusively of RCDS
students; the other 4 had RCDS students combined with students from
other schools! Concessions and commemorative apparel were available to
the crowd of over 500. Though the weather turned cold as the sun went
down, fans were still out in droves, dancing and cheering on their favorite
bands. With professional lighting, stage, audio, and camera equipment
and coverage by multiple media outlets, it was a great concert and a
unique way to market Riverfield to the public.
The following bands performed:
SUMMER CAMP
The Raven Ramblers are having an awesome time this summer! The school is filled
with happy campers every week. They are enjoying lots of different activities this
summer including new fun like archery, canoeing, and karaoke. Swimming and
playing in the splash pad are again a big hit. Camp Director Tiffany Crowl sums it up
in three words: “Fun, Food, and Friends!”
What an incredible year!
From Jerry Bates,
ASSISTANT HEAD
FOR INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
Many thanks to all of our constituents for the outstanding support that Riverfield
received this year. Your commitment to our students was evidenced in all aspects of
support: annual giving, capital giving, planned giving, and support of Riverfield Family
Association events. The highlights of the year in Institutional Advancement are listed
below:
• Annual Giving surpassed $100,000 for the second straight year
• The Riverfield Family Association Auction raised over $94,000
• Capital Gifts and pledges topped $225,000
The importance of receiving operating and capital support each year is critical to the
maintenance and growth of quality programs which benefit all of our students. This
year we added an additional priority, which was to establish a planned giving program
at Riverfield. As part of meeting the Tulsa Community Foundation’s Endowment
Challenge, we received four deferred gifts. Planned giving is crucial because it insures
the future of Riverfield.
To recognize individuals and couples who have made Riverfield part of their estate
plans, the Board of Trustees has established the Martha S. Clark Society. Certainly
no one will ever leave a legacy greater than Mrs. Clark and this is one way to
permanently recognize all that she has done for Riverfield. Below are the charter
members of the Martha S. Clark Society:
• Marty and Tom Clark
• Jackie and Rich Howard
• Sara and Craige Johnston
If you have remembered Riverfield in your estate plans and would like to become a
member of the Martha S. Clark Society, please inform us of your decision.
The following pages list those that supported Riverfield this year. On behalf of the
students, faculty, and staff, I would like to express our gratitude for all that our donors
have done to make this an incredible year at Riverfield.
Sincerely,
