Middle School basketball underway
By Zeke Clark
8TH GRADE
R
iverfield’s four
Middle School basketball
teams (6th
Grade Girls, 6th Grade
Boys, 8th Grade Girls, and
8th Grade Boys) are now
about halfway through
their seasons.
They have been working
hard all season and
shining in their games in
their own unique ways.
These teams are competing
in the Lake Country
Conference and play
against Gypsy, Anderson,
Jennings, Oak Grove, and
Pretty Water.
If you haven’t already
been to a game, come out
and support your friends
and classmates.
The 6th Grade Girls’
team currently has a record
of 0-6. They are
coached by Mr. Goettel.
The players on this team
are in 5th and 6th grades:
Grace Clark, Julia Hale,
Mariana Hightower, Ryan
Lenard, Meredith Peters,
Madison Rogers, Carter
Smith, Lauren Southerland,
Somerlyn Talladivedula,
Daphne West, and
Rachel West. Although this
is a young team, their
coach has very high expectations
for this great group
of student athletes.
The 6th Grade Boys’
team currently has a record
of 6-3. They are
coached by Mr. Clark. The
players on this team are in
5th and 6th grades: Brett
Anderson, Braden Bates,
Caymon Cross, Drew Dreiling,
Braxton Gore, Charlie
Heldebrandt, Jad Jaffar,
Evan Keeley, Noah
Laubach, James Morley,
Ben Violett, and Logan
Wheeler. These players
have been working hard
and are looking for a shot
at the conference title.
The 8th Grade Girls’
team currently has a record
of 3-6. Coach Stack is
leading this team. The
players on this team are in
7th and 8th grades: Ragan
Auxter, Ally Carson,
Ashtyn Fox, Reese Goettel,
Olivia Graves, Erica Kelley,
and Kate Rhynes. These
players have done a fantastic
job throughout their years
playing on all the middle
school teams.
The 8th Grade Boys’
team currently has a record
of 5-4. Coach Rowell is leading
this team. The players on
this team are in 7th and 8th
grades: Zeke Clark, James
Hale, Cullen Harvey,
Stephen Holland, Franklin
Pace, Ryan Patrick, and Tater
Pugh. Coach Rowell says,
“I really like how they play
together, and also how much
effort they give on the
court.”
All these basketball
teams are still in season, so
come out and support them!
Where Star Wars went wrong!
By Addison Standley
8TH GRADE
S
tar Wars is one of the
most famous sci-fi
franchises of all time.
It has captured the hearts
and imaginations of many
people, including myself. But
George Lucas, the creator of
Star Wars, has taken a lot of
stumbling steps backward
for the franchise, and here’s
why.
The first three movies --
A New Hope, The Empire
Strikes Back, and Return of
the Jedi -- are considered the
best of the Star Wars films.
They are considered by
many to be perfect in every
way. However, the prequel
trilogy, consisting of The
Phantom Menace, Attack of
the Clones, and Revenge of
the Sith, has gotten a notably
negative reception from diehard
fans of the series,
mainly because of the cast
members’ horrible acting,
the inclusion of Jar Jar
C
hristmas is a time for
family, friends, and
watching the traditional
holiday specials we
have watched on TV year
after year.
We all have our favorite
Christmas specials we like to
watch, so I asked a couple of
people what their favorites
are.
Tyler Violett’s favorite is
the animated “How the
Grinch Stole Christmas.”
Zeke Clark’s favorite
thing to watch at Christmas
is “Home Alone.”
Garrett Wheeler’s favorite
Christmas movie is “Elf”
with Will Farrell. (I happen
2
Binks, and the ludicrous
and poorly executed stories.
My personal favorite
is Attack of the Clones, but
it does get really cheesy at
times.
The main reason The
Phantom Menace got so
much negative criticism
was because of the inclusion
of the character of Jar
Jar Binks. George Lucas
added him to replace R2-
D2 and C3P0 for comic
relief during the first half
of the film, but he spends
to like this one a lot as
well.)
Stephen Holland’s favorite
is the live action
version of “How the Grinch
Stole Christmas” with Jim
Carrey.
Nicholas Hartman’s
favorite Christmas special
is “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”
What is your favorite?
We all have our favorite
things to watch at Christmas,
and the things we
watch are usually a family
tradition. Hopefully we’ll
be watching our favorite
specials on TV for years to
come.
the rest of the film following
the other characters
around and not doing anything.
Attack of the Clones got
a lot of negative criticism
due to its poorly executed
plot. The characters also
spend a lot of time talking
ARTWORK: DAN-DARE.ORG
about galactic politics,
which bored many fans. To
make matters worse, the
film introduced Hayden
Christensen’s horrible acting
skills, which added to
the criticism. He portrays
the main character of Anakin
Skywalker as an emotionless,
awkward, and uninteresting
young man.
Revenge of the Sith fared
much better critically than
its predecessors. There isn’t
a lot wrong with this film
besides the flat romantic
scenes between Anakin and
Padme’ Amidala and their
badly written dialogue.
The Star Wars: The Clone
Wars series is also considered
a huge step backward
for the franchise. In my
opinion, it is one of the most
poorly written, badly voiceacted
shows ever made, and
it does little to reinforce the
timetable between episodes
two and three.
All in all, while Star Wars
is a great sci-fi series and a
beloved part of many people’s
childhoods, not all of
the films are perfect. If you
like the prequels more the
main trilogy, perhaps you
should reexamine these
films for yourself.
The history of curling
By Zeke Clark
8TH GRADE
C
urling is a sport in
which players slide
heavy, polished granite
stones (also called
“rocks”) across a sheet of ice
toward a target area. The
sport is related to shuffleboard.
Two teams consisting of
four players take turns sliding
the stones towards the
targeted area (the“house”).
Each team has eight
stones, and the purpose is to
accumulate the highest score
in a game. The closer the
stone is to the center of the
“house,” the more points
each team receives.
Two players accompany
the stone as it slides down
the ice, using brooms to alter
the state of the ice in front of
the stone, influencing the
distance and direction the
stone travels.
Curling is thought to
have been invented in medieval
Scotland. Evidence
that curling existed in Scotland
in the early 16th cen-
tury includes a curling
stone inscribed with the
date 1511 that was found
when an old pond was
drained in Dunblane, Scotland.
The first written proof
of the game being played
was in February 1541.
In the early history of
curling, the playing stones
were flat-bottomed river
rocks. Unlike today, the
players had little or no
control over the stone, and
the players relied more on
luck than skill.
Today the game is one
of those played in the Winter
Olympics, and has been
since 1998. The current
powerhouse teams in curling
are Canada, Sweden,
and the U.S.
Curling is a sport that
probably doesn’t come to
mind when most people
who live here in Oklahoma
think of sports. But in fact,
it is one of those small
sports that is constantly
growing. Today, it has
more than 1 million registered
players worldwide.
LOVE VALLEY
(part 2)
By Heather Ruskoski
and Olivia Edwardes
8TH GRADE
Synopsis: Blaze, the stallion,
and Misty, his beloved
mare, are captured
in pens on opposite sides
of the river …
G
rass brushed the
tips of Misty’s nose
as she tried to ignore
the fierce kicks of her
unborn foal. Somehow, she
knew it was almost time
for her baby to be born.
She waddled around
the fence of the pen in
which she had been imprisoned
for all these
months, searching for a
soft place where she hadn’t
eaten all the grass. Finally
finding a nice spot to lay
down, she let her legs collapse
under the weight of
her swollen belly.
Misty had become
weaker in the last few days,
and she knew that soon
she would not be able to
get up for food or water.
She felt so weak that she
wondered if she would be
able to survive the birth of
her child.
One cloudy, humid day
her pain was so intense
that she knew it was finally
ILLUSTRATION: CARE2.COM
CREATIVE
FICTION
time. She rolled over on
her side and tried to control
her gasps for breath.
The foal kept her from calling
out for help, for every
time she tried to neigh, a
wave of nausea washed
over her like an ocean of
sickening darkness. Her
vision blurred, and she was
afraid her life might soon
be over. Desperately, she
began thinking of her
child’s future.
Suddenly she saw a
familiar face. Could it be
her beloved, Blaze? Her
heart soared and the pain
was forgotten for a moment,
but it was not Blaze.
It was her loyal friend,
Maria, whom she had not
seen for months.
Maria stood on the outside
of the fence and softly
whinnied to her. The
sound of Maria’s voice
calmed Misty, who felt a
sense of relief now, knowing
that her baby would be
taken care of.
Misty let the blackness
close over her like a heavy
blanket. Before she was
totally consumed by the
darkness, she whispered to
Maria, “He is everything to
me … take care of him.”
Your top 5 favorite restaurants
By James Morley
6TH GRADE
T
here are many popular
restaurants in
Tulsa, Oklahoma. I
wanted to find out which one
is the most popular among
Riverfield’s Middle School
students. So on November
22, I asked everyone during
our lunch period. Here are
the results!
As I guessed, Buffalo
Wild Wings got first place
with 11 votes. Taco Bueno
came in second (8 votes),
Wendy’s was third (6 votes) ,
Mazzio’s was fourth (5
votes), and Chick-fil-A was
fifth (4 votes). A lot of other
restaurants were mentioned
— there were 49 votes total.
What do you do over Winter Break?
W
inter Break is
finally here!
I was wondering
… what do my classmates
do over their Winter
Break?
So I asked some people
in my Newspaper class
what they usually do.
Stephen Holland said
that he usually stays home
and hangs out with his
family, doing fun activities.
Noah Laubach is looking
forward to his grandparents
coming to celebrate
the holidays with his
family.
Addison Standley usually
goes to Dallas, Texas
for his Winter Break.
Then I realized I could
GRAPH BY JAMES MORLEY
get a wider variety of answers
if I didn’t just ask the
Newspaper staff. So I
asked a few other students
what they will do.
Ben Smith plans to stay
home and have relatives
over to celebrate the holidays.
Alex Milton likes to
stay home and play in the
snow if there is any.
But Sami McPherson is
going to California for her
Winter Break.
So, as you can see, people
do a lot of different fun
things during their Winter
Break.
I hope you have a great
time, and we’ll see you
next year! ILLUSTRATION: FREE-CLIPART-PICTURES.NET
MYSTERY
PERSON
By Stephen Holland
8TH GRADE
Y
ou may have
guessed the Mystery
Person last
time, but this time YOU
WILL NOT FIGURE IT
OUT! (I hope.)
Once again, I will ask a
middle school student
some questions. These
questions will make it very
hard to figure out who the
person is.
I will make you think
HARDER this time! Do
you think you will figure it
out? Why am I asking
you? You won’t figure it
out. Or will you?!
Stephen: Who is your
favorite superhero?
Mystery Person: Silver
Surfer.
S: What is your favorite
color?
?: Blue.
S: What is your favorite
type of music?
?: Rock.
S: How many years have
you gone to Riverfield?
?: This is my third year.
S: Do you participate in
any sports?
?: I do martial arts and
soccer.
S: What is your favorite
?: The LAC Commons ...
S: What do you like to
do in your spare time?
?: Play video games,
watch movies, and read
Calvin and Hobbes comics.
S: Thanks for answering
my questions.
Now, do you think
you can figure out who
this person is? Remember,
if you can’t figure it
out, or if you think you
know who it is, you can
always look on the back
Exactly why did I ask
you if you have an opinion
about either of these coloring
utensils?
I have always liked
both colored pencils and
markers, but I have always
had dislikes about both. I
like colored pencils because
they don’t bleed
through paper, and you
can blend colors easily.
But they don’t look as
colorful as markers. With
markers, the color pops off
brilliant! But if you try to
mix them, they don’t blend.
You can’t erase them, either.
And sometimes they bleed
through the paper.
Thinking about this
made me want to find out
what other people think. So I
decided to ask you, the middle
school students, which
coloring utensil you preferred.
So who do you think
won? You probably already
know because you looked at
the graph first. But if you
read this first and guessed
right, you get an imaginary
Winter Break is just around the corner !
The history of the Snickers bar
By Logan Wheeler
6TH GRADE
T
he Snickers bar has
become the most
popular candy bar
in the world.
More money has been
spent on the Snickers bar
than any other candy bar.
It has nougat in the
middle, is topped with
peanuts, and covered in
chocolate.
The Snickers bar was
created in 1930 by Frank
and Ethel Mars, the incorporators
of Mars, a private
U.S. corporation. It has
been a big hit ever since.
Franklin Mars was
born in Minnesota on September
24, 1883. At an
early age, he helped his
mom make candy in their
home kitchen.
After high school,
Frank stated selling candy
and eventually began several
businesses.
In 1911, Frank and his
wife were making candy
out of their Tacoma, Washington
kitchen.
Once 1920 came, Frank
and his wife Ethel moved
to Minnesota and began
the Mar-O-Bar company.
By the end of the 1920s,
the Mars family was very
successful and was on its
way to becoming a world
leader in producing chocolate
snack bars.
In 1934, just a few
years following the invention
of the Snickers bar,
Frank Mars died at the
young age of 50. But his
work continues to live on
in the millions of Mars
candy bars sold every day.
to be called the “Marathon”
have two water parks, 23
on-site themed resort hotels,
a campground, two
health spas and physical
fitness centers, five golf
courses, and more recreational
and entertainment
attractions including
Downtown Disney, Dis-
ney’s Boardwalk, and the
ESPN Wide World of
Sports Complex. Disney
World is located near Orlando,
Florida.
I asked some middle
school students and teachers
which is their favorite,
Disney World or Disneyland.
Noah Laubach said,
“Disney World, because it
is much bigger, and I like
the rides better.”
I asked Mrs. Knight
which she preferred. “I like
both a lot for different reasons,
so I can’t answer
that,” she said.
Elora Wymore said she
likes Disney World better
because there is more variety.
Ben Smith has never
been to either park, but he
became the name worldwide
in 1990.
I asked Mrs. Dickey’s
opinion about the candy
bar and she said, “Who
doesn’t like Snickers?!”I
totally agree with her. Do
you like Snickers bars?
thinks Disney World would
be more fun. However, he
did think it would be easier
to get around inside Disneyland
because it’s not as
spread out.
I have only been to Disney
World, and it was an
incredible experience. I encourage
you to visit either of
these magical places.
The history of the McLaren F1 LM
By Tyler Violett
8TH GRADE
T
he McLaren F1 LM is
a really fast car that is
extremely rare and
expensive.
The McLaren F1 LM was
made for the road, but it is
fast enough to be a race car.
It goes from 0 to 100 mph in
only 6.7 seconds and weighs
a little over 2,300 lbs. Built
in 1995, only the prototype
and five of these cars were
ever produced.
According to roadandtrack.com,
“When the F1s
were going to race at Le
Mans in 1995, it was assumed
by most teams that
the all-out sports racing
cars would win, not one of
the production-based
GTRs. Yet, the pure race
cars failed and at the end
of the 24 hours, McLaren
F1 GTRs were in 1st, 3rd,
4th, 5th, and 13th places.”
Due to the unexpected
success the F1s had at Le
Mans, McLaren Automotive
built five unique versions
of the F1 — one for
each GTR that finished the
race at Le Mans.
McLaren built these
versions of the F1 and
added “LM” for Le Mans.
They are easy to spot because
they are painted
“papaya orange” to honor
the company’s founder,
Bruce McLaren, who used
the color on his
own race cars.
These five
cars are basically
F1 GTR
race cars made
legal for road
use. They retained
the race
car’s external
The life of Mr. Clark
By Garrett Wheeler
7th GRADE
R
ecently, I had a
chance to interview
Mr. Clark
about his life. Here is what
he said.
Garrett: What is your
birth date, and where did
you grow up?
Mr. Clark: March 26,
1966. I grew up in four
places. I was born in Lake
Forest, Illinois. I moved to
Colorado Springs when I
was six. Then I moved to
Wilmington, Delaware
when I was ten. And finally,
I moved to Tulsa
when I was 13.
G: What school did you go
to in Tulsa?
Mr. C: Holland Hall. I
graduated in 1984.
G: Who was your best
friend growing up?
Mr. C: My brother, Tim,
who is almost two years
older than me.
G: What did you like to do
growing up?
Mr. C: I played just about
any sport I could. The big
sports I played were ice
hockey, tennis, and soccer.
And I played football in
high school.
G: When you were a kid,
what did you want to be
when you grew up?
Mr. C: A professional athlete.
I tried doing professional
tennis for a couple
of years, but I never really
thought about a job until
after college.
THE TREATY, part 3
Previously in “The
Treaty”: Two Jarigo
knights killed King Darium
and went after his son, Carnell,
who was hiding in a
nearby room of the castle.
They attempted to kill him,
but Darium’s most trusted
knight, Alistair, appeared
just in time. He killed the
two knights, saving Carnell’s
life …
A
fter fierce fighting,
the Jarigo soldiers
retreated from the
Darium kingdom later that
day.
Everyone was glad they
were gone, but they were
deeply depressed because
their beloved King Darium
had died. Everyone spent the
next few days mourning in
silence.
MYSTERY PERSON: Kip Derryberry. Did you guess correctly?
A memorial service was
held to honor the king. As
Carnell stood next to Alistair,
he welled up in tears,
remembering his brave
and kind father. Everyone
was silent and looked
down at the ground.
The following day, Alistair
sent a spy to try to obtain
information
about the Jarigo
knights. The
spy returned
the next
day, and
he was
frantic.
“Sir
Alistair!” he
exclaim-
ed when he
made it
cial, but I tended to have a
small number of good
friends.
back to the village. “The
people of Jarigo are planning
another attack!”
“Really? When will they
come?” Alistair asked anxiously.
“The day after tomorrow!
They’re coming with
their biggest army yet!”
Alistair stood in
thought for a few moments.
“All right,” he then
said, turning to face the
Darium army standing
close behind. “Men, we
must be prepared,” he said
to them. “We will start
training for our next fight
against Jarigo.”
“Why bother?” one of
the soldiers asked. “We
have no chance! Without
Darium, we can’t possibly
win. We might as well just
give up.”
G: What college did you
go to?
Mr. C: I went to Principia
College in Elsah, Illinois.
It’s about 45 minutes away
from St. Louis.
G: When and where did
you meet your wife?
Mr. C: In San Francisco
on a blind date. We were
both about 26 at the time.
G: Why did you decide to
come to Riverfield?
Mr. C: One reason is because
Mrs. Clark is my
mom. And the school was
going to add a high school,
which really sparked my
interest. Plus I had Tim,
Zeke, and Grace. They
were young and were able
to attend Riverfield.
G: Thank you for your
time!
CREATIVE
FICTION
Alistair thought for a few
minutes. “All right then,” he
said. “I will train you myself.”
The army stood there in
shock.
“I can do it!” Alistair continued.
“I know just as much
about combat as King Darium
did! Trust me! I will
lead us to victory!”
The soldiers looked at
one another and began talking
among themselves. Finally,
they decided to give
Alistair a chance to lead
them.
“Great!” Alistair exclaimed.
“Training begins
now. LET’S GET STARTED!”
The army cheered. Alistair
smiled. “Jarigo’s not
going to win this time,” he
thought.
