Disruption to the site workingwas minimised by timing the visit to a90 minute window over an extendedmid morning tea break. This enabledall the visitors to get around the site.The safety of visitors wasmaintained by marking a routearound the perimeter of the site withtraffic cones and barrier tape anddedicated accesses into both theCompressor House Mezzanine Floorand Reaction Bay areas. This gavethe visitors a close up view of themain Process Plant and Equipment.The visit was made moreinteresting by setting up fourcomputer workstations to engage theinterest of the younger visitors andenabled them to walk through theelectronic model of the LDPE plant.In addition, a computer graphicsmodel was displayed on a largescreen for all to see. Also, SABIC setan observation questionnaire for theyoungsters to completeafter their sitewalk around,with eachsuccessfulentrant receivinga prize.Additional Safety FeatureOn arrival at the site offices, the145 attendees were allocated anindividual identification number. Thisnumber was used to check them onto the construction site and ensure allwere accounted for upon their return.The event began with ashort Visitors’ Safety Inductionpresentation from the client, whoadvised everybody what to do inthe highly unlikely occurrence of asite emergency. SABIC personnel,who had previously undergone a fullsite health and safety induction bySimon Carves Site Safety Manager,then showed small parties of 6 to 8people around the site.On their return to the siteoffices, Simon Carves served lightrefreshments and the childrenreceived a memento of their visit.The Open Day Event was verywell received by all.
