SENIOR SCHOOL FIXTURES4 February 2006 Results on the WebsiteLast week saw the majority of the Collegeinvolved in CAS Round 6 of Summer Sport for2006 primarily against Cranbrook School. While most of our new Year 7 students werebusily taking part in trials in preparation forthis week(some Yr 7 “A&B” teams did playagainst Cranbrook) where they will berepresenting the College for the first timeagainst Trinity Grammar School. Our Firsts teams started the year on a highwith our Basketballers, Cricketers & Tennisplayers all recording good victories. Our FirstBasketballers continued on their winning waywith their 6 th straight victory against adangerous Cranbrook outfit at Cranbrook –always a taunting task – but a solid 80-69victory sets them up for a possible undefeatedseason. Our First XI cricketers continued their goodform from the end of last term with a tightvictory against Cranbrook. Batting firstWaverley could only make 133 but restrictedCranbrook to 122 after good bowlingperformances by Nathan Rowe & Louis Talay. Our 10A’s also continued their unbeaten runwith another tight victory at Queens’ Park inthe morning – after making just 116 they toorestricted Cranbrook with some good bowlingand fielding to just 99.Highlight of the cricket on the weekend wasthe mighty 8B’s – bundling Cranbrook out forjust 35 and making the runs with 9 wickets inhand. But in this outstanding victory was a rarefeat – Harrison Tagg who had the amazingbowling figures of 5wickets for 1 run. A GreatEffort!!!Our Firsts Tennis Team also recorded anoutstanding 7-1 victory over the lowly-rankedCranbrook team to also keep their CAS titleaspirations alive.REMINDER : CAS Swimming CarnivalYears 12, 11 & 7 will be attending the CASSwimming Carnival on Friday the 10 th March.Further details will be distributed in the nextfew weeks. Attendance for these year groups isessential and the date should be highlighted inyour diary. It is a great evening and ourswimmers need all the vocal help from ourband of supporters. This week our main fixture is against TrinityGrammar School with many teams traveling to“away” venues it is vitally important thatappropriate travel arrangements are made, soplease check the draw at the College and inthis Nurrunga.Term DrawsWill be available for Cricket, Basketball, Tennis& Volleyball by the end of this week. I willplace copies at the Front Office and also itshould be up on the College Website By Friday. This is to help both parents and students withthere organization on Saturdays for theremainder of the summer season.REMINDER – not being able to get to a venueof inappropriate travel arrangements ARE NOTa reasonable excuse to be absent fromSaturday Sport. The draw is around theCollege by Wednesday of each week whichgives everyone ample time to organizethemselves whether that be public transport, parents and/or friends. Students will be issuedwith 3-hour Saturday Detentions this “excuse”is used. It is unfair on teammates, your coach, your College and the opposition if we do notfield full teams on the weekend.Good Luck to all our teams this weekend.Mr D.WoolnoughCRICKETTeam Vs Field Time1-Day Cricket1st2nd3rd4th5th10A10B9A9B8A8B8C8D7A7B7C7DTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTGS 1QP 1QP 3QP 3QP 27QP 1QP 21TGS 3QP 23TGS 2TGS 2Powells CreekQP 23QP 2Powells CreekBressington 1Russell Park10:0013:3009:0013:3013:3009:0013:3009:0013:3009:0013:3009:0009:0013:3013:3013:3013:30BASKETBALLTeam Vs Field Time1st2nd3rd4th5th6th7th8th9th10th10A10B10C10D10E10F9A9B9C9D9E9F9G9H8A8B8C8D8E8F8G8H7A7B7C7D7E7F7G7HTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityBarkerBarkerTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTGS GymTGS GymTGS Gym 1TGS Gym 1TGS Gym 1TGS Gym 1TGS O/S 2TGS O/S 2TGS O/S 2TGS O/S 2Waverley GymWaverley GymWaverley Gym 1Waverley Gym 1Waverley Gym 1Waverley Gym 1TGS Gym 2TGS Gym 2TGS Gym 2TGS Gym 2TGS O/S 2TGS O/S 2Waverley O/S 1Waverley O/S 1Waverley Gym 2Waverley Gym 2Waverley Gym 2Waverley Gym 2Waverley O/S 1Waverley O/S 1Waverley O/S 1Waverley O/S 1Five Dock 1Five Dock 1Five Dock 1Five Dock 1Five Dock 2Five Dock 2Five Dock 2Five Dock 213:1512:0011:0010:0009:0008:0013:0012:0011:0010:0013:0012:0011:0010:0009:0008:0011:0010:0009:0008:0009:0008:0013:0012:0011:0010:0009:0008:0011:0010:0009:0008:0009:0008:0011:0010:0011:0010:0009:0008:00TENNISTeam Vs Field Time1st2nd3rd4thTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityTGS Tennis CentreTGS Tennis CentreTGS Tennis CentreTGS Tennis Centre08:0008:0010:3010:30Open 5/6 Internal Waverley 07:0010A10B10C10D10 E/F9A9B9C9D9 E/F8A8B8C8D8 E/F7A7B7C7D7E/FTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityInternalTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityInternalTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityInternalTrinityTrinityTrinityTrinityInternalKingsfordKingsfordKingsfordKingsfordWaverleyTGS Tennis CentreTGS Tennis CentreTGS Tennis CentreTGS Tennis CentreWaverleyMutch ParkMutch ParkMutch ParkMutch ParkWaverleyCooks RiverCooks RiverCooks RiverCooks RiverWaverley08:3008:3010:3010:3014:3012:3012:3014:3014:3010:3008:3008:3010:3010:3011:3008:3008:3010:3010:3013:00WATERPOLOTeam Vs Field Time1st2nd16A16B14A14B7SICSICSICSICSICSICSICRiverview PoolRiverview PoolRiverview PoolRiverview PoolRiverview PoolRiverview PoolRiverview Pool09:4510:3011:1011:5009:1008:3508:00VOLLEYBALLTeam Vs Field Time1st2nd3rdTrinityTrinityTrinityWaverley GymWaverley GymWaverley Gym14:3015:0014:30WEIGHTS & FITNESS - Weights Room 8.00JUDO - College Hall 9.00CYCLING - Riverview 8.30SWIMMING GROUP - College Pool 10.30LAWN BOWLS - Waverley Bowling Club 9.00PLAYING VENUESFive Dock– Cnr Queens & Williams Sts, Five DockCooks River – Tennent Pde, Hurlstone ParkPowells Creek – George St, HomebushBressington – Underwood Rd, HomebushRussell Park – The Parade, DrummoyneWet Weather No. 82 503 780 after 7am for morninggames & 11.00am for afternoon gamesRESULTS FROM PREVIOUS SATURDAY SPORT CAN BE FOUND ON THE COLLEGE WEB SITEww.waverley.nsw.edu.auYear 11 Service WorkProgramYear 11 Service Work ProgramBy now the parents of Year 11 should have received a letter outlining the expectations of theService Work Program this year. Some of the immersion experiences will start this week.Students will receive information on how they can volunteer for the various activities. It shouldbe noted that students hoping to be considered for leadership positions next year need tocomplete their Service Work by the start of term three.Social Justice Symposium to KolkataAt the end of last term I travelled to Kolkata (Calcutta) to a symposium organized by theChristian Brother’s leadership team. Over the next few weeks I would like to share some of myexperiences there. One hundred and thirty delegates from various C.B ministries worldwidegathered to listen and to share ideas on Human Rights issues. I think the conference confirmedfor me that as an Edmund Rice school we are part of a much bigger picture. The guest speakerswere generally people who were passionate about a particular cause such as education or ecojustice. We also got the chance to visit and work in various orphanages and schools. I think themost confronting experience for me was the day I spent as a volunteer in Mother Theresa’sHome for the Dying and Destitute. They were certainly well groomed and intheir uniform they looked great. I exhort them to keep this upthroughout the year. Thanks to you mums and dads for presentingyour sons so well. The young men were also most co-operative – and this is a good signas it would not have been easy to go from “holiday mode” to “workmode” in such a short time. I also thank the staff for their workduring Week 1 – they also got off to a great start. We are well and truly into the swing of things. Last week it washeard “hurry-up mum, we’re going to be late as he was leaving thecar however, it was only 8.15am and the bell wasn’t due to go till8.50am a good 20 minutes early!!”Some parents have asked how could it be? Such different attitudes toschool in such a short time - maybe it is something in the water ormaybe they are just very happy to be a Waverley College student.Waverley is about making a difference, producing a young man whowill make a difference. Not merely as high achievers, but young menwho will be good in every thing they do. Soon, very soon there willbe a parent information evening (Feb 20), where you’ll get to sit inyour son’s size chair with the teachers instructing you on all sorts ofinformation. We will give you all sorts of policies from homework tothe who’s who at Waverley. I’m sure your son has already told youwhat an exciting vibrant school Waverley is.It is inspirational to see how our Year 5 boys have gone from beinglittle chaps to confident young men and the Year 6 gentlemen havegone from strength to strength in such a short time, responsible andchallenged.Unfortunately on hold are the listless days of surf, sand and sun andcarefree hairstyles!! Need I say more? A number of young men havebeen reminded about appropriate hairstyles (College Diary p.23).The past week has been extremely busy, new school, new rules, newteachers, and new sports. Hopefully your young man will develop acuriosity for the wider world and a thirst for knowledge, a zeal forunderstanding and in the years to come a secure love of God. LastThursday we had a prayerful, meaningful liturgy asking God’sblessing on our year. Our first Mass will be our Commencement Massfor the whole College on February 16.This week we’ve continued with Summer Sports selections for ourfirst games this Saturday.Friday (Feb 17) is the Junior School Swimming Carnival –½ day carnival – the boys will be dismissed early on this Friday the17 th . Please check Junior School sports news in Nurrunga.Over the years I’ve tried as I might to get school notices home so ifyou haven’t received a note please check the diary or your son’sschool bag.A thought to mull over during the next week – “God’s gift to me ismy life, how I use my life is my gift to God.”Cheers and God BlessSr Ann & Junior School Staff.BABY NEWS:Sean McGreevy – Year 6 Green, welcomed a new baby brother on 27 thJanuary – James Anthony – congratulations to the McGreevy family.Secondary CafeteriaAll students in Year 9 will be participating in Ballroom Dancinglessons. It was a close call in the first’s doubles sets, with MariousZelba and Robert Mellor clawing their way to a 7-6 victory in thefirst set but gaining a comfortable 6-2 in the second set. Bothplayers were much more confident in the singles sets, both stridingto 6-1 leads. The other doubles pairing of Blade Fong and William Veron made aconfident start with a 6-4 win, but succumbed to Cranbrook in thesecond doubles set. Both players regained their confidence in thesingles sets with a 6-4 win to Blade Fong and a close 7-6 victory toWilliam Veron.Overall, the first team is looking strong with a 7-1 victory overCranbrook. The seconds team started strong, winning three out of the fourdoubles sets. Salvador Huetos and James Goodman put up a bravefight in the singles sets but didn’t manage to regain the confidenceof their doubles set victory, losing 6-4 and 6-3 to Cranbrook. Best of luck to all teams thisweekend.Mr R Chen, MIC BasketballWaverley v’s CranbrookThe biggest game of the year, was met with the biggest crowd of theyear, at Cranbrook Gym on Saturday as the Waverley 1st V looked toincrease their lead at the top of the CAS table and all but secure thetitle, against their arch rivals and main contenders. The clash of the titans on the court was also played out in the standsas the “Brookie Boosters” came up against one of the loudestWaverley cheer squads assembled in years, made up predominantlyof the Weights and Fitness Squad and a large cohort of old boys, keen to see a broken drought of Waverly Basketball success. The first half was a tight one, as both teams struggled to get into aflow, but when the Waverley voices began to drown out the “BrookieBoosters”, the blue and gold began the second half with a flurry andthe Brooks soon found themselves fifteen points down.In a fine display of school spirit, the hundreds of Waverley boys inattendance, flooded the court as the final siren sounded. Waverleydefeated Cranbrook 80-69, and all supporters declared victory, andcame to congratulate the team, particularly Anatoily Bose whoseemed to have more rebounds than every other player on the courtcombined. Joshua Murray nailed his defensive assignment andLinden Smith-Hyde had no problem coming up with the big playswhen they were most needed all day long.On behalf of the team, a huge thank you to all who supported us onthe most memorable day.Adam Skibsted, 1 st V CaptainWeek 2, 2006The Waverley Cycling Team won the first meet of Term 1 2006 atHeffron Park on Saturday, 286 points to 336 points (lowest totalwins). This was the first chance to welcome and see the newmembers of the team perform, and they did very well consideringtheir experience. The racing was tight during the Long Races untilwe got down to Division 6, the youngest members, when Waverleywon handsomely setting up the win later. In the Sprint races Division 4 came through to confirm the result.Congratulations to both teams on good teamwork and great spiritand sportsmanship.I should mention that the Waverley Cycling Teamnow has a track pump thanks to the fundraising efforts of last term,so many thanks to those who contributed in this regard. Orders areopen for cycling jerseys, so if you are interested see Mr. Auer.Peter Auer, MIC CyclingRound 6 v CranbrookWaverley won the toss and elected to bat. The team was in troubleearly with both openers Ben Wakim & Nolan Matthews out and only4 runs on the board. The outfield was wet and very slow but TomWallace & Luke Towers began to get on top. When the total was 37Tom Wallace played a rash shot and was bowled. Daniel Mitchelljoined Luke Towers and the score was 57 when Daniel Mitchellchased one and nicked to the keeper. The very aggressive innings ofLuke Towers (38) ended with the total on 62. Michael Pulella battedwell for 27, while Louis Talay, Oscar Zerbst and Nathan Rowe allplayed well to see Waverley all out on the last ball of the 50 th over for133. Cranbrook began the chase after the lunch break and wasrestricted by some excellent bowling from Nathan Rowe (3 for 19)and Oscar Zerbst. The first wicket fell with the total on 18. The next to fall was with thetotal on 47 in the 20 th over. The spin twins of Nolan Matthews (3 for24) and Louis Talay (3 for 18) restricted the scoring and some goodbowling changes saw the wickets begin to tumble. Adam Fitzpatrickpicked up a wicket in his first game in the 1 st ’s and then DanielMitchell pulled off a great stumping which turned the game back toWaverley. It was down to 15 balls left to play with Cranbrook 9wickets down requiring 10 runs to win. Louis Talay tempted the bigshot and the miss timed slog ballooned to Luke Towers at squarepoint to give Waverley a very good win.
