We are well and truly into the swing of things. Last week it washeard “hurry-up mum, we’re going to be late as he was leaving thecar however, it was only 8.15am and the bell wasn’t due to go till8.50am a good 20 minutes early!!”Some parents have asked how could it be? Such different attitudes toschool in such a short time - maybe it is something in the water ormaybe they are just very happy to be a Waverley College student.Waverley is about making a difference, producing a young man whowill make a difference. Not merely as high achievers, but young menwho will be good in every thing they do. Soon, very soon there willbe a parent information evening (Feb 20), where you’ll get to sit inyour son’s size chair with the teachers instructing you on all sorts ofinformation. We will give you all sorts of policies from homework tothe who’s who at Waverley. I’m sure your son has already told youwhat an exciting vibrant school Waverley is.It is inspirational to see how our Year 5 boys have gone from beinglittle chaps to confident young men and the Year 6 gentlemen havegone from strength to strength in such a short time, responsible andchallenged.Unfortunately on hold are the listless days of surf, sand and sun andcarefree hairstyles!! Need I say more? A number of young men havebeen reminded about appropriate hairstyles (College Diary p.23).The past week has been extremely busy, new school, new rules, newteachers, and new sports. Hopefully your young man will develop acuriosity for the wider world and a thirst for knowledge, a zeal forunderstanding and in the years to come a secure love of God. LastThursday we had a prayerful, meaningful liturgy asking God’sblessing on our year. Our first Mass will be our Commencement Massfor the whole College on February 16.This week we’ve continued with Summer Sports selections for ourfirst games this Saturday.Friday (Feb 17) is the Junior School Swimming Carnival –½ day carnival – the boys will be dismissed early on this Friday the17 th . Please check Junior School sports news in Nurrunga.Over the years I’ve tried as I might to get school notices home so ifyou haven’t received a note please check the diary or your son’sschool bag.A thought to mull over during the next week – “God’s gift to me ismy life, how I use my life is my gift to God.”Cheers and God BlessSr Ann & Junior School Staff.BABY NEWS:Sean McGreevy – Year 6 Green, welcomed a new baby brother on 27 thJanuary – James Anthony – congratulations to the McGreevy family.Secondary CafeteriaAll students in Year 9 will be participating in Ballroom Dancinglessons. Both players regained their confidence in thesingles sets with a 6-4 win to Blade Fong and a close 7-6 victory toWilliam Veron.Overall, the first team is looking strong with a 7-1 victory overCranbrook. The seconds team started strong, winning three out of the fourdoubles sets. Best of luck to all teams thisweekend.Mr R Chen, MIC BasketballWaverley v’s CranbrookThe biggest game of the year, was met with the biggest crowd of theyear, at Cranbrook Gym on Saturday as the Waverley 1st V looked toincrease their lead at the top of the CAS table and all but secure thetitle, against their arch rivals and main contenders. The clash of the titans on the court was also played out in the standsas the “Brookie Boosters” came up against one of the loudestWaverley cheer squads assembled in years, made up predominantlyof the Weights and Fitness Squad and a large cohort of old boys, keen to see a broken drought of Waverly Basketball success. The first half was a tight one, as both teams struggled to get into aflow, but when the Waverley voices began to drown out the “BrookieBoosters”, the blue and gold began the second half with a flurry andthe Brooks soon found themselves fifteen points down.In a fine display of school spirit, the hundreds of Waverley boys inattendance, flooded the court as the final siren sounded. Waverleydefeated Cranbrook 80-69, and all supporters declared victory, andcame to congratulate the team, particularly Anatoily Bose whoseemed to have more rebounds than every other player on the courtcombined. Joshua Murray nailed his defensive assignment andLinden Smith-Hyde had no problem coming up with the big playswhen they were most needed all day long.On behalf of the team, a huge thank you to all who supported us onthe most memorable day.Adam Skibsted, 1 st V CaptainWeek 2, 2006The Waverley Cycling Team won the first meet of Term 1 2006 atHeffron Park on Saturday, 286 points to 336 points (lowest totalwins). This was the first chance to welcome and see the newmembers of the team perform, and they did very well consideringtheir experience. The racing was tight during the Long Races untilwe got down to Division 6, the youngest members, when Waverleywon handsomely setting up the win later. In the Sprint races Division 4 came through to confirm the result.Congratulations to both teams on good teamwork and great spiritand sportsmanship.I should mention that the Waverley Cycling Teamnow has a track pump thanks to the fundraising efforts of last term,so many thanks to those who contributed in this regard. Orders areopen for cycling jerseys, so if you are interested see Mr. Auer.Peter Auer, MIC CyclingRound 6 v CranbrookWaverley won the toss and elected to bat. The team was in troubleearly with both openers Ben Wakim & Nolan Matthews out and only4 runs on the board. The outfield was wet and very slow but TomWallace & Luke Towers began to get on top. When the total was 37Tom Wallace played a rash shot and was bowled. Daniel Mitchelljoined Luke Towers and the score was 57 when Daniel Mitchellchased one and nicked to the keeper. The very aggressive innings ofLuke Towers (38) ended with the total on 62. Michael Pulella battedwell for 27, while Louis Talay, Oscar Zerbst and Nathan Rowe allplayed well to see Waverley all out on the last ball of the 50 th over for133. Cranbrook began the chase after the lunch break and wasrestricted by some excellent bowling from Nathan Rowe (3 for 19)and Oscar Zerbst. The first wicket fell with the total on 18. The next to fall was with thetotal on 47 in the 20 th over. The spin twins of Nolan Matthews (3 for24) and Louis Talay (3 for 18) restricted the scoring and some goodbowling changes saw the wickets begin to tumble. Adam Fitzpatrickpicked up a wicket in his first game in the 1 st ’s and then DanielMitchell pulled off a great stumping which turned the game back toWaverley. It was down to 15 balls left to play with Cranbrook 9wickets down requiring 10 runs to win. Louis Talay tempted the bigshot and the miss timed slog ballooned to Luke Towers at squarepoint to give Waverley a very good win.
