Page 2Lake Havasu High School NewsletterFrom the PrincipalDenise MinerWelcome to the 2011 -2012 school year! I hope that each of you had a relaxing and rejuvenatingsummer and your students have returned to LHHS ready to start a fresh, new year! We are happyto welcome 20 new teachers to Lake Havasu High School, 5 of which have transferred in-district.Ms. Tracy Pressley will be joining us as our new counselor and for those of you who have beenwith the high school for awhile, you will remember Ms. Sarah Skemp, who will also be returningRoger as a counselor! Burger, Athletic Finally Director we would also like to welcome 7 new classified staff to LHHS includingMs. Terry Trinko and Ms. Fran Dropinski who will be in the Media Center as our new mediaassistants. Ms. Julie Burkholder will be located in the Career Center.I would like to share with each of you briefly a few of our LHHS goals for this year. The first is toimprove our graduation rate. Our graduation rate for 2011 increased 6% since 2009 and with theintroduction of our A+ Credit Recovery program this year I believe we will continue to outdo thecounty and the state in 2012. Ms. Amy Koch will be running this program and she has been hardat work all summer preparing for the 1 st semester. This program will allow students who havebeen unsuccessful in the past and have failed a class to pre-test based on state standards. Theywill be able to move beyond those standards that they have already mastered and focus on thosethey need to learn. Successful completion of the class will permit students to earn credits at aquicker pace so that they may get back on track with their peers and graduate on time.Secondly we are spotlighting anti-bullying and all staff members were trained during an inserviceat the beginning of the year. Students and staff will watch informational videos eachmonth depicting various bullying scenarios and have a question and answer period duringChannel 1. Contact your student’s counselor for further resources or to report bullying. Please discuss with your student the AZ SAFE definition of Bullying:Repeated acts over time that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power with themore powerful child or group attacking those who are less powerful. Bullying can be physicalin form (e.g., pushing, hitting, kicking, spitting, stealing); verbal (e.g., making threats, taunting, teasing, name-calling); or psychological (e.g., social exclusion, spreading rumors, manipulation social relationships).Thank you for your continued support of Lake Havasu High School!
