TEXTILE CONSEQUENCESCharlotte Medin has created a craft matrix for her Textile Consequences project as a formula for selecting a mixture of processes such as knotting, wrapping, slicing andknitting together with materials such as leather, wood, metal and yarn. Medin’s collection creates an intriguing, mismatched beauty where contemporary craft is no longerbound to the constraints of traditional methods and materials.www.charlottemedin.com

CRAFTICAFendi has worked with Dutch design studio, Formafantasma to further the upcycling concept by using discarded animal waste alongside Fendi’s exquisite leather to makeone-of-a-kind, recycled furniture items. Cow bladders have been shaped into carafes, while salmon, perch, trout and wolffish skin finish stools. The pieces look to theancestral memories of the materials.www.formafantasma.com

DECAFÉRaúl Laurí’s Decafé collection is a selection of decorative accessories, tableware and lamps made from coffee grounds. Heated and pressurised, the grounds are thenshaped and set solid, leaving the solid coffee-based material as a sustainable and biodegradable material.www.rlauri.com

WOOD CASTINGHilla Shamia’s furniture combines cast aluminium and wood. The work uses whole wooden logs, which are seared and cast in molten aluminium. Wood-casting furnituremerges organic material with abstract forms using industrial techniques.www.hillashamia.com

SOIL HORIZONSSoil Horizons celebrates the beauty of soil and the different colours and textures you find as you dig into the ground. Puckett has created a book using 12 types of differenthandmade paper constructed from dead leaves, found roots and desert sand, with each page representing a different geological layer. The front and back pages symbolisethe earth’s atmosphere, bedrock, canopy and molten core, which when opened represent the peeling back of the planet’s many layers.www.maggiepuckett.com

MASTER OF LIGHTINGMaster of Lightning - Elliot Dahlgren Strååt saw the artist use overcast, stormy weather to his advantage by creating a glass vase produced by lightning hitting a mouldfilled with sand. Spending numerous days devising his plan, Strååt had to trust the power of nature as he sent a raft into the lake which held his sand mould. Afterretrieving the mould from the lake bed after the storm, Strååt proudly showed off his vase which is unique in shape, colour and pattern, with air bubbles and lightningstreaks weaved throughout.www.dahlgrenstraat.com

PRECIOUS OBJECTSYa-Wen Chou’s collection Precious Objects is a result of a longing to regain native Taiwanese traditions and appreciation for naturalistic existence. Chou uses a mixture ofnatural materials including bamboo and coconut to create a strata composite.www.arwenchou.tumblr.com

EXPANDING WOODIn the series Expanding Wood, Marjan van Aubel creates seven tables. Planing down one standard wooden table into wood chippings, she then recasts the particles, whichexpand when mixed with glue. Designing seven new tables from the material gained from one, her finished products are the result of innovative recycling and optimisation.www.marjanvanaubel.com

E-SOURCE BIKEElectrical and electronic waste (WEEE) is one of the fastest growing waste problems in the world. This type of waste is notoriously difficult to recycle and the UK illegallysends much of its own waste to huge dumps in Africa, where young people are employed to route through huge mounds to retrieve useful, recyclable components. Wattshas designed the Esource bike, a low-tech machine which separates wire and copper using an innovative water method, a process which is safer and provides moreeconomical results for the workers. This piece marks a new era for recycling, a welcome development in third world countries where the landfills are places of work.www.halwatts.co.uk

MONEY BOWLSLondon-based design duo Arthur Analts and Rudolph Strelis have given new life to thousands of pounds worth of uncirculated bank notes, recycling them into a series ofpapier-mâché bowls. Shredding the worthless notes obtained from the Bank of England, Analts and Strelis then bond the pieces together and coat the inside with white gelfor a clean contrast against the grey, flecked appearance created from the money.www.analts.com
