FOREWORDHello there, and a very warm welcome to thelatest edition of CARA Focus, our nationalnewsletter.It’s been a big few months for all of us – with launch in May of the CARA APA Centre, thefocal point of what’s becoming a nationalorganisation to co-ordinate, facilitate andadvocate for the inclusion of people withdisabilities in sport, physical activity andphysical education.The Centre is jointly funded by the Irish Sports Council and the Insti-performed by two sporting legends - the Minister of Arts, Heritage andOlympic silver medallist, John Treacy, the Chief Executive of the IrishSports Council.Among the proud supporters present at the opening were the membersof CARA’s new steering committee, set up to help and advise NiamhDaffy, the National Manager, and the staff of the burgeoning centre.The committee includes representatives from the Irish WheelchairAssociation, the Special Olympics, the COPE Foundation, Renault,RTE, St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, the Institute of Leisure andAmenity Management, IT Tralee and the Irish Sports Council.Those representatives, though they come from many different backgrounds,are united in one aim… that the CARA centre, and is networktunitiesfor people with disabilities to engage in sport at all levels– whether they want to be Paralympic World Champions like MarkFuture – or simply casual users of their local sports partnerships.On behalf of the steering committee, our congratulations to PatFlanagan, Niamh Daffy, Ursula Barrett and the management and staffof IT Tralee, both past and present. The CARA centre is a testament tomore than a dozen years of their vision and hard work. A note from CARACARA APA Centre launchI must begin by congratulating Special Olympic Team Irelandwho had an outstanding performance at the 2011 SpecialOlympics World Summer Games , recording a number ofpersonal best records and winning a total of 107 Medals anddozens of place ribbons in 12 sports.Along with the excitement of the Summer Games there hasbeen a number of exciting developments throughout Irelandover the last number of months. Only a few weeks agoI stopped off in Limerick to view the Powerchair FootballNational Cup event at the UL Sports Arena. It was reallyimpressive to see the changes that have occurred in the sportin only a few years, now with a national association, 10clubs and a National Team in preparations for a world cupthis year. Just a short drive away in the Delta Soccer Dome,soccer for children with vision impairments and wheelchairbasketball was taking place. Coming away from Limerickthat day, one could only be enthused by the quality of theevents organised for both children and adults with disabilitiesand the skill of all participants involved.It’s been a busy few months for CARA. The 2nd CampAbilitiesIreland was held in April which was an outstandingsuccess. The 4th National APA Conference organised inassociation with IT Tralee and the Irish Sports Council wasby Minister Jimmy Deenihan and CEO of the Irish SportsCouncil Mr John Treacy. As we’ wind down’ from thesesuccessful events we slowly begin to ‘wind up’ with ourplanning for the European Congress of APA which will takeplace in Ireland next May. Last week, along we colleaguesfrom the APA stream at IT Tralee, I travelled to the InternationalSymposium of APA in Paris where we presented onAPA developments in Ireland and in particular the SportsInclusion Disability Programme in the Local Sports Partnerships.Many international experts were impressed by thestructures we have here in Ireland and in particular the practicalparticipation opportunities which have developed as aresult of national coordination via the Irish Sports Counciland the CARA Centre and local provision through the SportsInclusion Disability Programme. A structure which manyare very interested in learning more about when they attendthe European Conference here in 2012.It’s with great pleasure that I welcome Liam McDonoughCentre. I would like to thank everyone who contributed tothis edition.Special thanks to Patrick Flanagan and Peter Bounds forputting this edition together.Have a wonderful summer...Niamh Daffy, Manager CARA APA CentreNational Training and Education DevelopmentsI would just like tore-introduce myself inmy new role for those ofyou who know me andintroduce myself to thosethat do not, my name isLiam Mc Donough andI have taken up the roleof the National Training the CARA National APACentre. I have previouslybeen the SIDO for KerryRecreation and Sports Partnership and Limerick City SportsPartnership.One of the key areas of the National Training and Educa- opingand promoting cost effective training and educationworkshops for coaches/instructors/teachers/para-educators/leisure professionals and students in the inclusion of peoplewith disabilities in Sport, Physical Activity and PhysicalEducation.Where requested the CARA Centre through the National-Inclusive Physical Education and Inclusive Games.While this is a National role, as the National Training and CARA and IT Tralee is involved in the adapting the currentEIPET resource designed to train PE teachers in APE. Theseadaptions will help make the resource usable for othersports related courses such as Sports Science, Sports andRecreation, Leisure management and Rehabilitation. Thisresource is already being used in colleges and universitiesacross Europe and with our Europe partners we aim to roll itout across the world.I am very excited about the National Training and Educationthe massive talent we have in Ireland working with peoplewith disabilities in the sports, recreation, physical activityand physical education settings.I look forward to working with you all in the future.
