4 August 25, 2014 Pinewood NewsFoodie's Paradise on Old Route 66By Stacey WittigVagabonding Lulu Travel WriterWhat's all the foodie buzz about the Turquoise RoomRestaurant on old Route 66 in Winslow, Arizona?Arizona Highways, the New York Times, and theSeasonal Chef are applauding the success of Chef John Sharpe in the remote high desert ofNorthern Arizona. One of my friends and her husband recently traveled over 100 miles tocelebrate her 35th wedding anniversary there. Retired folk groups from local churches arefilling vans with patrons on a pilgrimage to the Turquoise Room.Chef John Sharpe, ownerof the Turquoise RoomRestaurantThey are all raving about the food, service andambiance. I shouldn't be surprised about all the accoladeswhen I look at Chef Sharpe's resume.John Sharpe and his wife Patricia opened theTurquoise Room in fall 2000 after owning four restaurantsand a catering business in southern California formany years. His career began in England as an apprenticechef in a five-star hotel. Graduating from the WestminsterHotel School, he moved to Switzerland, where he workedand studied for three more years. Sharpe spent anothertwo years cooking in other European countries beforemoving to Los Angeles in the mid 1970s.A contributing and defining part of his latest restaurantin Winslow is the Churro lamb cassoulet. Churro lamb istotally and completely unique to the Northern Arizona high desert. From a foodie point ofview, savoring Churro lamb in the southwest is tantamount to experiencing Brest chicken inBrest, France. The meat expresses the soil, climate, culture of the Navajo region for whichChurro was bred.Other place-based items on the menu include certified Angus Choice Prime Rib Roast aujus (“Best end-cut I’ve had in years,” proclaims one well-heeled traveler), traditional HopiPiki bread and elk medallions.Chef Sharpe uses local ingredients and incorporates into his menu many indigenousASPEN ANNIE’SLANDSCAPING, INCfoods that are both important food sources and alsoimportant to the ritual and spiritual and symboliclives of the Native Americans of the region. “I’mnot limited anymore to simply southwest cuisine... Itry to be a bit more local-foods focused with therestaurant now,” reveals Chef Sharpe. As a memberof Chef’s Collaborative he works to encourage localgrowers to provide the restaurant with sustainablygrownfoods of all kinds.La Posada Inn WinslowFounded in 1993, Chefs Collaborative providesits members with tools for running economicallyhealthy, sustainable food service businesses. Chef Sharpe is also involved with Slow FoodUSA which envisions a future food system that is based onthe principles of high quality and taste, environmental sustainability, and social justice.Walk back into time at LaPosada Inn, home of theTurquoise Room*photos by Stacey WittigIn keeping with those values, Chef Sharpe buys Churrolamb from nearby Navajo herders, traditional Piki cornbread from Hopi pueblo women, and goat cheese fromlocal farmers. Squash blossoms come from Phoenix andthere’s “halibut caught by Native Americans from Alaskain the kitchen now,” said Chef Sharpe when I was there.Located in the romantic La Posada Inn, a grand dame ofthe railroad era, The Turquoise Room Restaurant, MartiniLounge and Espresso Bar will be YOUR favorite 'paradiseon old Route 66'. www.theturquoiseroom.net 303 E 2nd St,Winslow AZ 928-289-2888Stacey Wittig is a freelance writer based in Munds Park, AZ. Pinewood News August 25, 20145LINER.I.P. CAREY WHITEby Jan TothI had some bad news last week… a friend and former volunteer passed away unexpectedly andmuch too early. Carey White was the Pastor at Munds Park Community Church, a volunteer firefighter/EMTand a friend. He helped my mother through her fight with cancer, even visiting her when shewent to Phoenix. He stopped by to see my mother the day after she died, he had tears in his eyeswhen I told him. He had planned to get there a couple of days earlier but life had gotten in his way. Ihope I made him understand how much his visits had meant to my mother.Carey went out of his way to help the community and its residents during any type of family emergency. When a death occurred, he often stayed with spouses until family could make the 2-3 hourdrive up the hill. He was always at the hospital visiting his parishioners and any other Pinewood residentswho might be in the hospital. I don’t remember the exact years he was part of our departmentand community, but he was a truly caring and giving man as long as I knew him.He always had a smile and a hardy laugh. He was “harassed” by the female department membersduring training. He became our “training mannequin” and we often swung him upside down in theEvac-U-Splint, made him blush when he had to strap Gina onto the backboard and when someoneunobtrusively stuck a foam nozzle down the back of his turnouts. He took this all with a smile, alaugh and a sense of humor. He only asked that we not use the Lord’s name in vain… a tall order forsome of us, but we tried.Back in the day…. As today, our department was filled with caring, dedicated and, at that time, well trained volunteers. Carey was one of them. I missed him when he left Munds Park, and I misshim now that he has gone home to the Lord he loved and in whose image he existed.Good Bye Carey.THE GOOD OLD DAYS…. What ever happened to them? I remember when we used to sit quietlyby the radio every morning at 8 a.m. waiting for the trivia question of the day on KOLT radio I thinkit was. Between all of us, we were pretty good at trivia. We got through more often than not, in fact, the DJ’s began to recognize my voice and call me by name. Pete told them that we were NACFUI(nac-fu-e) Northern Arizona Center for Useless Information. We prided ourselves on that name. I gotthrough on a question of what groups of animals were called… I got it right… They asked me how Iknew and I told them I had the list in my file cabinet. Pete used it in his EMT class. The first time Iever got through on the trivia line was the Monday before my Paramedic written test and I was sittinghome in my pajamas with my medical dictionary on my lap. The question was related to a type ofphobia which were all listed in the back of the medical dictionary. I am willing to bet I was the onlyperson sitting with a medical dictionary on their lap next to a phone! I won a tape of Faith Hill. TheDJ, who happened to live out here, brought it to me at the fire station.DaveCANTRELLCoNsTRuCTioN CompANy928-286-9599 • Cell 928-606-6608Licensed General ContractorSpecializing in Remodels & Additions.ROC59323 • Bonded • P.O. We all brought food and beverages and we built a huge bon fire in the middle of the cul-desac.The next year they paved the roads so we had to take the “Flatlanders” party outside the Park. Wemoved it a couple times and finally settled on the opening on the right about one mile out on FS 240.It was close enough that everyone could come out for food and we still were able to respond quicklyto emergency calls. We had snow one year and had to move it into Bill and Gina’s garage. One yearwe all (at least those not on duty) decided to make it an overnight camp out. I slept in the back of mycar in a sleeping bag, some had tents, some had campers and one even slept on a boat. One year wehad Uncle George and his little green tractor dig a hole and we buried a pig and turkeys! Most of thetime we had brats, hot dogs, and hamburgers with all the side dishes and fixings. The parties started at11 a.m. and went to 2 and 3 a.m. but they got much shorter as we got older. Like 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.Brad always took care of fire wood for the bon fires and we had huge bon fires. Most of the timeseveral of us sat around until it went out and covered it with dirt. But one year it was so big we had togo back and get a fire truck to put it out. There was a lot of friendship, comraderie and just plain fun.Not to say the new generation isn’t fun, we just all have different tastes and we’re in a differentworld. But the good old days are fond memories!HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR SMOKEDETECTORS LATELY??

Pinewood News August 25, 20147You know how it is. You’re tired, busy. Youthrow something together for dinner that isquite adequate. But you don’t like to do adequate, so step upyour game with an array of single servingdessert options that took almost no time to dobut look as if you run a five-star restaurant.(Not really. I made that last part up. But anarray of dessert options will improve your diners’memory of dinner.) Thus, Quick CookTip #9:QC Tip#9Wow ‘em with dessert if dinner is ordinary.Okay, sounds good right? But three dessertoptions? Seriously?Yep! People like options. Makes them thinkthey’re at a fine eatery. And these are easypeasy. All it takes is a little prep, and you’regood to go. Put them on a tray or buffet tableand let people choose one or more. And these desserts are soooo good, I amincluding them in an upcoming culinary mysterybook I’ve tentatively titled it Devil’sFood Wake (a witch story with the murder ofa coven member). That should be a good bookfor dessert recipes. Now who doesn’t like dessert? My husband ismad for chocolate. Even more than mywomen friends, so I make lots of chocolatedesserts. Given how hot summer can be, evenin Munds Park, I especially appreciatedesserts that don’t heat up the kitchen. Here are three for you! The first uses avocadosas the base for pudding. Weird? Maybe, but it is tasty! The second is a one-minutemicrowave cake that is too easy! And the thirdis a dessert that is actually good for you, almost a health food. The Quick CookWho Doesn’t Like Dessert?bySharon Arthur Mooreshould be yummy with fresh fruit on top orserved on pound cake. You know me, I’m not much on pre-packagedfood stuffs, but I have made an exception forthis too-easy microwave cake recipe for whenI need a dessert in a minute--literally a minute.I also do sometimes make my own cake mixesfor microwave cake, just so you know. But forquicker and easier, try:One-Minute Chocolate Microwave Cake1 box Angel Food Cake Mix1 box chocolate cake mixThoroughly combine the two cake mixes andstore in a gallon zipper plastic bag.To make a single serving:5 heaping tablespoons cake mixture3 tablespoons water1 teaspoon mini-chocolate chips1 teaspoon finely chopped nutsIn a 12-ounce mug, thoroughly mix cake mixturewith water. Stir in chocolate chips andnuts.Microwave on high for one minute. Let sit forfive minutes.Serve as is or top with more mini-chocolatechips, ice cream, whipped cream, or freshberries.Eat from the cup or up-end onto a plate byrunning a table knife around the cake edge. The final recipe one has made the Internetrounds, so you might have seen it. No realrecipe, but simple to replicate:Frozen Chocolate-Nut Bananas (serves 2)1 very ripe bananaMini-chocolate chips (maybe 1/2 cup)Finely chopped nuts (maybe 1/2 cup)Come Make a Sandblast Bird Bathwith LaceySunday, August 31 at 10:30 amcost is $15.00Landscapes by LaceyDesign•Build•MaintainCall Lacey for free estimates602-828-9770email: highcountryhomegarden@gmail.comLicensed - Bonded - Insured - ROC# 284501RPM CONSTRUCTION INC.FreeEstimatesLet Us Build Your DreamNo JobTooSmallSalted Caramel Dark Chocolate AvocadoPudding (4-6 servings)3 ripe avocados, in food processor1/2 cup honey6 tablespoons dark chocolate cocoa powder2 teaspoons vanilla1 tablespoon caramel syrup per servingSea salt to tasteBeat until smooth. Box 18673Munds Park, AZ 86017By Bill SpainPPOA Citizen Awards ChairChuck Steen Receives PPOA Citizenship AwardAnd Is Example Of True Community StewardshipFOUR PEOPLE WEREKILLED IN ARIZONA IN 2013BY LIGHTNING STRIKESINCLUDING TWO TOURISTSAT OAK CREEEK OVERLOOKJUST A FEW MILES FROMMUNDS PARK.Community Emergency Alert SirenLightning: A twenty second long sustained blast of the siren means seek cover fromopen areas…leave the golf course, do not take cover under trees…go in-doors as soonas possible. All Clear for Lightning is three short blastsChuck Steen is always smiling….and laughing….andcajoling those around him to be involved in thelocal community. Chuck has given hundreds ofhours of volunteerism to Munds Park over theyears and was the lightning rod behind the lightningsiren that rings out loud over our community whenever there is danger ofpossible lightning strikes in our vicinity. The vote to name Chuck Steen as a recipientof a “Citizenship Award” was unanimous among the PPOA Board of Directors, chosen from a candidate field of six finalists.“Chuck is a very persistent and focused man,” said Dick Drinen, President of thePPOA Board. “In his good natured way, he doesn’t let road blocks stop him fromachieving the ultimate goal,” added Drinen, “Which is a major reason why wewere successful in implementing the siren safety program. He found many innovativeways to make the installation happenin a reasonable and cost effectivemanner,” commented Drinen.Chuck “Siren” Steen worked with thecompany that manufactures the sirenlocated above the Pinewood Fire Stationalong with the Fire Chief to install thesafety device. He overcame one roadblock after another to make the multiyearprocess become a reality. The sireneffectively notifies Munds Park residents of possible lightning danger as well asother possible emergency scenarios including threat of fire or attack. The safetydevice was installed in 2012 replacing an antiquated system that was difficult tohear.Lightning caused 23 deaths nationwide in 2013 with Arizona and Florida havingthe highest number of strikes. Safety devices such as the siren installed in MundsPark have brought lightning deaths to the lowest level ever in 2013. The highpoint of lightning deaths occurred in 1943 with 432 deaths nationwide. Arizonahas always been one of the highest lightning strike areas in the country. The idea of getting struck by lightning has always been equated to somethingrare and unlikely, but records show dying from a strike is more common thanfrom other natural phenomena. Since records began in 1940, more than 9,200people have been killed in the U.S. by lightning. This compares to around 7,400killed by tornadoes, 7,500 killed by floods and 3,300 killedby hurricanes.Fire: A blast of sixteen seconds on, followed by eight seconds of in a series of fourcycles announces a fire emergency in the local areaAttack: Six seconds on and three seconds off for a sequence of three cyclesALL CLEAR: Six seconds on and three seconds off for a series of three cycles for Fireand AttackBesides his earmark success with the installation of the emergency siren andthe raising of funds and reducing of costs associated with the program, Chuckalso served in a variety of ways for the benefit of the community. He was avery active member of the PPOA Board for ten years and served as theCommunications Chair, initiating the “Happenings Column.” He was RosterChair and also participated in Community Relations, Park and Rec and theEnvironment Committees. Chuck was instrumental in the initiation of the ParkBench seating that is placed all along Pinewood Blvd. for the use of the localcommunity. Chuck involved himself in a lot of the smaller details that otherswere not interested in but the community benefits from.Chuck Steen has been a Captain in the Neighborhood Watch Program for Unit10 A for several years. He was instrumental in the development of the SanitaryDistrict Advisory Committee who was responsible for the recruitment andselection of Jim Wilson, our current sanitary district manager. Chuck evendeveloped the employment contract pertinent to Jim’s hiring. He has ownedproperty here with his lovely wife, Dee, since 1979, originally living on Wildcatoff Mustang until building his log cabin dream home “On Golden Pond.” TheSteen’s hosted the PPOA annual year-end party for nine years before retiringfrom the PPOA board a few years ago. Dee and Chuck have been married for44 years and have two children and two grand-children with another one onthe way expected in September. Chuck founded a mini-storage business backin 1977 when only twenty of them existed. He enjoys wood-working and makingfine craftsman furniture and riding ATV’s with friends in the surroundingforest near Munds Park. The individuals selected to receive the PPOA Citizenship Award receive a giftcertificate for $100 from the organization in recognition of their efforts. Moreimportantly, the award winners, who represent the best in volunteerism, bothcivic and philanthropic, are recognized by their peers and constituents as settingan example and tone for inclusiveness, helpfulness and caring for others. These leaders give back to the community in a kind, generous and selflessmanner…without an agenda and for long periods of time. Chuck Steen is atrue example of this kind of leader and is missed by those he shared time andtalents with on the Pinewood Property Owners Association Board.

Pinewood News August 25, 201417Single SeniorsCaretakingBy Annie WeissmanWe single people have to help each other, especially when one of us is sickor has surgery. A friend of mine had a gastric bypass last week. That’s an electivesurgery, but she felt it was necessary and I supported her. She has diabetes, highblood pressure and bad sleep apnea. She did a sleep study earlier this year and theystopped it because she stopped breathing fifty-six times in one hour! She’s claustrophobicand couldn’t get used to the mask of the breathing machine. I checked onher every morning from February until I moved up to Munds Park in May. We usuallyread the paper together and have tea and coffee. If she didn’t call me, I wasworried she had expired from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.) Many peopleshe knew had gotten rid of all three conditions by having the bypass. So she didit for health, not her looks. Her son, among others, couldn’t figure out why she was taking such drasticmeans. Why couldn’t she just lose weight on her own? She’d tried: twenty years of seeing a fat doctor and getting weekly B12shots, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. You name it, she, tried it. The weightalways came back. She calls her weight “super glue fat” because it refuses to let go.The month leading up to her surgery she gained fourteen pounds by simplynot monitoring what she ate. She had to go on a liquid diet the week before surgeryand lost five pounds.I took her to the hospital early and the surgery went well. All of this doctor’spatients go to ICU after recovery. I thought the care would be outstanding butI was wrong. I was the one who disconnected her many attachments and accompaniedher on her mandatory hourly walks. I’m sure if you’ve had a loved one seriouslyill in the hospital in the last ten years, you know that a friend or family memberneeds to be there to make sure care is delivered. My friend looked healthy right after her surgery, but then she has rosacea. She’s an assertive person, but refused to make a fuss. She had major water retentionbut they sent her home at 8:30 pm on Sunday night, of which she was delighted. She had to have oxygen. It was quite challenging for me to set up the condenserand all the paraphernalia as I am mechanically deficient. I gave her pain med andshe slept all night first time in years. She was still on a liquid diet so I stayed on one too, in solidarity, although Ido admit to eating ice cream bars when I went across the way to my house. The next morning we looked for medication instructions. The hospital ha d insistedthat the doctor had given them to her in an appointment the week before. When shecalled the surgeon’s office, the nurse said she would email the instructions butnever did.We took our dogs for a walk and she pointed out to me that her belly looked ninemonths pregnant. I suggested she weigh herself. We were both shocked that she’dgained twenty pounds! I’d never heard of anyone gaining weight after bypasssurgery. I know she stayed on her liquid diet since there was nothing else in thehouse. How could this be?As a former nurse, she explained to me fancy terms for waterretention. She took a diuretic, but only lost five pounds. Afriend, who had the surgery and lost and kept off two hundredpounds, came over. She was shocked at my friend’s waterretention. We took pictures of her feet. Her poor little toeslooked like sausages. The good news is that she no longer has to take medicationsfor high blood pressure or diabetes. As of this writing, a weekafter surgery, she still is seven pounds heavier than when she went in for the operation. It must be that superglue fat refusing to give up.Check out my book, Reinvented Lives, available on amazon.com, mywebsite at www.annieweissman.net and my blog atwww.thesinglesenior.wordpress.com.Email me at annieweissman@aol.comI Offer:“As a local fulltime resident for more than adecade, I know the features and benefits ofPinewood whether you’re buying or selling.”1. 18 August 25, 2014Pinewood News“ Broker Tidbits” By Bill Spain,Provident Partners Realty,Designated Broker“Keep On Coming Rain!”Sales Rebound Quickly WithMonsoon Deluge and Pent UpDemand Aiding The RecoveryThe spring season is fully behind us now and the results wereencouraging. Although sales were adversely affected by the wildfiresof May and June, the overall results were the best the Parkhas seen in many years. In analyzing the “CMA” (ComparativeMarket Analysis) overall sales for Munds Park for 2014 versus2013, the Park had a 52.6% increase over the prior year in totalvolume. 2014 sales totaled $15,743,450 in total sales for zone7340, Munds Park versus the previous year of $10,322,349.Eighty-five transactions closed in the spring season in 2014 versusfifty-nine in 2013Interestingly, the sales volume statistics also reflected that thehigh sale in 2014 thus far was a new build sale of a 2700 squarefoot home off Krolak Way which sold for $520,000. Last year’shigh was also off Krolak way and was $469,500. The low sale wasa lot for $56,500 this year versus one last year for $40,000.Average sale price increased from $174,975 last year to $185,217in 2014…. A 5.8% increase.Pending Sales, Pending Taking Back-ups and Active withContingency have hit a year-long high of thirty transactions in thehopper as of this article’s writing. More importantly, they totalmore than $6,206,300 in listing volume which is a huge numberfor one month. The only components showing a decrease this yearto last year is percentage of list price being attained. Last yeartotal properties were selling for .94% of asking price and this yearthat percentage has fallen to .92%. This may be a factor of ownersover-pricing their properties earlier in the season and having toreduce their asking price in order to elicit an offer. It is encouraging to see the market rebound so quickly from theawful June performance. Ofcourse, you work hard at your own job, but, when you think of it, every worthwhileendeavor in life requires significant effort— and that’s certainly the case with investing. The harder you work at it, the morelikely you are to make progress towardyour goals. So as you think about investing, considerthe following areas in which you willneed to apply yourself:• Work to identify your goals. It’s importantthat you know just why you’re investing.Do you want to send your children (orgrandchildren) to college? Do you want toretire early? What sort of retirementlifestyle do you envision? What kind oflegacy do you want to leave? Identifyingyour financial goals is the necessary firststep toward achieving them.• Work to know your own risk tolerance. It’s essential that you know your owninvestment personality — that is, howmuch risk you can comfortably handle. Ifyou think you can handle a relatively highlevel of risk, but you find yourself worryingexcessively over every drop in the market, you may need to re-evaluate your risktolerance and adjust your investmenthabits. Conversely, if you believe yourselfto be highly risk-avoidant, but you findyourself frustrated over the relatively lowreturns you get from conservative investments, you may need to revise your thinking— and your actions.efforts to predict market highs and lows aredoomed to fail — because no one canaccurately forecast those points. You willwant to be especially diligent about learningto look past the headlines and beyondshort-term price movements in the financialmarkets — because too many peopleoverreact to these events. If you can avoidthese bad investment habits, you’ll bedoing yourself a favor.• Work to follow a consistent investmentstrategy. If you invest over the courseof several decades, you are going to see alot of ups and downs in the financial markets. And when the markets get choppy, you may be tempted to take a “time out”from investing. But if you do this repeatedly, you will certainly interrupt the progressyou need to make toward your financialgoals. If you can develop the discipline tofollow a consistent investment strategy andto keep investing in all types of markets, you have a pretty good chance of “smoothingout” the effects of market volatilityover time. And, as a bonus, you’ll be farless likely to concern yourself over day-todayprice fluctuations.• Work to review your progress. Alongwith your financial advisor, consistentlyreview your progress toward your goals.Your investment professional should establishyour portfolio review frequency andmeet with you to discuss your investmentsat least once a year. So, there you have it — some ideas onhow you can work to be a better investor.THIS ELECTION IS NON-PARTISAN. Pinewood News August 25, 201421MUNDS PARK COMMUNITYEMERGENCY SHELTERAround three years ago Munds Park experienced a storm severe enough thatInterstate 17 was closed. One of the results of that action was a group ofstranded motorists needing food and lodging in our area. So our communityresidents sprung into action opening the Church giving shelter to those in need.Due to this incident, the MUNDS PARK COMMUNITY EMERGENCYSHELTER was established. With some assistance from Red Cross, the MundsPark Community Church was officially designated as a shelter in case of anytype of disaster that could occur in our area.As of today, we have a supply of food, toiletries, blankets, cots and a group ofvolunteers along with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)dedicated to help sustain 100 people for three days. Several issues that comewith an emergency shelter have been addressed in order to keep the shelterrunning in an efficient manner, but it doesn’t mean that we couldn’t use the helpof additional volunteers who live in Munds Park full-time or part-time. Forexample, some of those coming to the emergency shelter may have a pet travellingwith them and the shelter cannot have pets; it would be of great service ifmembers of our community could take a pet to their home temporarily.Residents who can play an instrument or enjoy organizing games to entertain agroup are a valuable asset. Even if you could just come down for a couple ofhours to give the core group of volunteers a little break. That would be appreciated. If you would like to be on our list of helpers, please contact ourEmergency Shelter Manager at 602-828-3272.Our wish is that we never have to activate the emergency shelter again, but itnever hurts to be prepared!Voted “Best Pest Control” 2008,2009,2010, 2011, & 2012

Each parcel owner was asked to participate in the initial balloting so that wewould know whether or not we have the required 51% participation to initiate the RMD.Lucinda Andreani, Deputy Director of Public Works for Coconino County agreed to have the county have the petition drafted if 51% agree beforehand andthat the county will pay the legal expenses with 70% participation. By July 25th, which was the requested reply date, more than 51% of the parcel ownershad agreed to participate so the RMD will be moving forward. It is the committees hope that more than 70% of the parcel owners will participate whichwill allow all monies raised to date to be spent on Beautification…trees, bushes and water and not on legal expenses.Businesses and property Parcel owners adjacent to the entrance are being asked to support a Road MaintenanceDistrict so that the Beautification project can be accomplished within the county and ADOT guidelines. The funds raised and grants received will be deposited with the county under the new RMD, then the BeautificationProject would be completed. Once completed, the Road Maintenance District would be dissolved by theinaugural directors appointed to the board. 34 August 25, 2014Pinewood NewsPinewood Players Announces Auditions for 2015 SeasonBy Bill Kane, Lynn Rouyer and Marsha ProppsAuditions will be held Saturday, August 30 at Noon for the three adult plays to be done next summer at the Pinewood Country ClubLibrary, located in the Pinewood Country Club. The plays will be in June and August of 2015. Plays selected are:1st Play – Hallelujah Girls, directed by Lynn Rouyer2nd Play – Be My Baby, directed by Bill Kane3rd Play – Whose Wives Are They Anyway, directed by Marsha ProppsBelow are synopsis’ and character descriptions for the three plays. Please join us on August 30 if you are interested in auditioning for any of these plays.Hallelujah Girls – by Lynn RouyerDo you have a bucket list? Or are you putting off til tomorrow what you would love to do? Well, time is precious and the girls of Eden Falls, GA realize thisafter their dear friend's funeral. The action in this rollicking Southern comedy takes place in SPA-DEE-DAH!, the abandoned church-turned day spa wherethis group of friends gathers every Friday afternoon. If they are going to change their lives and achieve their dreams they have to get on it NOW! But SugarLee, their high-spirited, determined leader, has her hands full keeping the women motivated. Carlene's given up on romance, having buried three husbands.Nita's a nervous wreck from running interference between her problematic son and his probation officer. Mavis' marriage is so stagnant she's wonderinghow she can fake her own death to get out of it. And sweet, simple Crystal entertains them all, singing Christmas carols with her own, hilarious lyrics. The comic tension mounts when a sexy, ex-boyfriend shows up unexpectedly, a marriage proposal comes from an unlikely suitor and Sugar Lee's arch rival,Bunny, vows she'll stop at nothing to steal the spa away from her. By the time the wo9men rally together to overcome these obstacles and launch their new, improved lives, you've got a side-splitting, joyful comedy that will make you laugh out loud and shout “Hallelujah”.The Cast: The characters should be portrayed as real people, not Southern caricatures.Carlene Travis: (50's) A no-nonsense gal with dry wit. Married three times, Carlene says she's been branded the “Black Widow of Eden, Falls” and that her'romantic life is history'. She's convinced by Sugar Lee to take a chance on Porter. Carlene is Crystal's sister.Nita Mooney: (50's) A very sweet, simple country woman. Nita works for the county, but really lives vicariously through romance novels and their storylines(which she has memorized). She h as a freeloading, lawbreaking son. Nita is a glass MORE than half full kind of person.Crystal Hart: (50's) Daffy and loveable. Very creative, extroverted, and undaunted. Crystal regularly dresses in costume and sings her own lyrics to popularChristmas songs. Crystal is Carlene's sister. Actress should be able to sing confidently, but not necessarily perfectly.Sugar Lee Thompkins: (50's) The ideal of a Southern woman. Dramatically attired in an explosion of color, Sugar Lee is vivacious, strong and smart. It isher idea to turn the old church into a day spa-as she says, “a place where women can come and shed their worries, refocus their lives, and walk out feelinglike they're on top of the world”. She doesn't comprehend that her past may be the on obstacle that she cannot overcome to save her smallbusiness.Bunny Southerland: (50's) Upbeat and seemingly pleasant, Bunny wears an ever ready sunny smile all the while being deliciously judgmental and passiveaggressive. The self-proclaimed social arbiter of Eden Falls, Bunny feels status is all important. She wants to take the church from Sugar to open a museumin her name.Bobby Dwayne Dillahunt: (50's): Unaware of his rugged good looks, Bobby has a self-depreciating sense of humor and a charming manner. He datedSugar in high school and wanted to marry her. Since then, he describes his life as a 'couple of failed marriages, couple of failed businesses, and a couple ofknee operations'. Bobby is now in construction and Sugar reluctantly hires him.Porter Padgett: (50's) A good hearted, gregarious blowhard. Porter doesn't know when to shut up and tends to talk louder than most people. He really enjoyshis own humor and has a big 'horsey laugh'. Porter works for the post office and lives with his mother. There is the potential for another male role that is the chauffeur, whipping boy for Bunny. And of course, there may be a woman or two that visit the SPA-DEE-DAH.Be My Baby – By Bill KaneThis is the newest play by Ken Ludwig, who wrote several of the very funny plays we have done recently: Lend Me A Tenor and Leading Ladies, for example.Hal Holbrook and Dixie Carter as they two leads evoked cheers and a standing ovation every single night of its world premiere in 2005. The press describedit as “a funny, feel-good kind of show that makes you warm all over.”The play tells the story of John, an irascible older “country boy” and an uptight “city” woman, Maude, who take on the journey of a lifetime. They are broughttogether when his ward marries her niece. Then, when the young couple decides to adopt a newborn baby, the older couple has to travel thousands of milesto California to pick up the child and bring her safely home. The problem is, John and Maude despise each other. To make matters worse, they get strandedin San Francisco for several weeks and are expected to jointly care for the helpless newborn. There they form a new partnership and learn some startlinglessons about life and love.Besides the two older leads, there are good supporting roles for the young couple. In addition, there are half a dozen small roles (doctor, nurse, judge, waitress, housekeeper, etc.) that are ideal for some first time actors to give a try.Whose Wives Are They Anyway – By Marsha ProppsThe cosmetics company has been sold and two of its Vice Presidents, David and John have planned a weekend off before the new CEO arriveson Monday. With their wives safely off to New York on a shopping spree they check into the Oakfield Golf and Country Club intending to "golftheir brains out". The unexpected encounter with their new boss (who they were shocked to learn is a woman) turns their plans upside down. She insists on meeting their wives, stating blithely " no one who went golfing for a weekend without their wife would ever work for me". NowJohn and David have to produce wives and the hilarity begins. The cast of 3 men and 5 women will create non-stop laughter!

38 August 25, 2014Pinewood NewsBirds of Munds Park #57The Case of the Fallen Featherby Margaret DyekmanWe were visiting family in San Diego a couple of weeks ago and in the middle ofthe at-home happy hour there, I received a text and photo from Andy: “We foundthis feather while hiking in Munds Park. What bird is it from?” At first glance Ididn’t know, so I showed the photo on my phone to Andrew, our niece’s husband, who (conveniently for me) works in one of the bird departments of the San DiegoSafari Park, previously called the Wild Animal Park. Andrew was sitting in frontof the television with the rest of the men watching pre-season football. He managesa department that handles rare bird egg incubation and raising chicks and hascool projects like transporting captivity- bred California Condors for release intothe wild in Idaho.Andrew didn’t know whose feather it was either, so heasked me from across the room, “What is your cell phonenumber”? He then texted me, and I texted back to him thephoto sent to me by my hiking friend. Next Andrew textedthe photo to two of his Safari Park work colleagues, Tianaand Jenny. Almost immediately one of them respondedback: “What habitat”? He texted back: “High elevation, pine forest”. Then Jenny sent us a link to a photo she foundfeather photo by Andy using the internet connection on her phone – and it wasdead on! A Northern Flicker tail feather. In the meantime, both Andrew and I were using our bird apps (I use iBird and also Peterson’s) onour phone to pull up more photos. In the span of about five minutes and with theawesome help of technology, we were able to text back to Andy the identity of thetail feather. The rest of the wine-and-beer sipping relatives in the room werethinking we were bird nerds, but we were actually quite proud of figuring out themystery of the Fallen Feather. The Northern Flicker we have in Munds Park,Flagstaff, and even the desert around Phoenix isthe Red Shafted species. The Yellow-ShaftedFlicker is found in the East. However, the twoforms have hybridized extensively and are nowconsidered one species called “NorthernFlicker”. There is also a “Gilded Flicker” that isfound in the southwest deserts, but it is muchRed Shafted Flickerharder to see. The Northern Flicker is a largewoodpecker that has a black crescent on its breast, red side mustaches, and ispretty easy to identify when flying because of its prominent white rump patch. Ittends to forage on the ground, eating ants, beetles, and other insects. It is morelikely to fly on your hummingbird feeder and suck out the sugar water with itslong tongue rather than frequent a seed bird feeder. Why did this one lose a tailfeather? It’s molting season! Nests were built, eggs hatched, and babies raised. So now is the time to grow in new feathers to prepare for the next season. The Fallen Feather episode really makes me appreciate again the many forms oftechnology we have at our fingertips. It probably was entertaining watching Andrewand me excitedly solve the mystery of the feather by texting, surfing the internet, scrolling through our bird guides, and sending photos using just our cellphones. My favorite birding app is iBird Plus and it quickly seems to be replacingmy books. However, I still treasure the very large Audubon’s “Birds of America”volume my parents bought me when I was 11 years old. Not only does it have extensiveinformation in it, but it also takes me back to happy times pouring over thepages and first discovering the many species of birds we have here in the Statesand their unique characteristics.Take Care of your TreesbyMike & RoslynMerristem Tree ServiceAdvice From Your Local Arborists: Synthetic Vs. Natural FertilizersFun Fact: The oldest living tree known to man is a spruce located inDalarna province in Sweden. It is 9550 years old and dates back to thelast Ice Age. However this spruce stands at a whopping 16 feet talland closely resembles Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree. Here in northern Arizona you might often find yourself standing in frontof a wilting, discolored, kind of sorry looking plant despite proper wateringand optimal weather. Immediately one’s mind defaults on fertilizeras your solution. But what kind should you use? To begin, there aretwo categories of fertilizers: natural and synthetic. Synthetic fertilizersare probably the most popular option because they make large corporationspiles of money resulting in better marketing. Don’t get mewrong MiracleGrow is very effective at what it claims to do and its applicationis extremely user friendly but the “best”, in my humble opinion,it is not. Synthetic fertilizers add basic nutrients to your plant byusing salts to make those nutrients available to the plant. These salts, however, kill virtually all of your soil’s beneficial biology such as fungiand bacteria. The beneficial soil biology is the natural process by whichyour plant accesses the nutrients naturally occurring in your soil. Oncethe soil has been depleted of these microbes, your plant is now completelydependent on synthetic fertilizers. Not only are you now forcedto feed your plant chemicals but synthetic fertilizers are extremely toxicto all life. If you have ever been overzealous one season with applyingMiracleGrow, you might have noticed that your plants and grasses turnyellow and die, a result we refer to as “fertilizer burn”. I am, if you havenot already noticed, a devout proponent of natural methods. Naturalfertilizers such as compost, manures, and worm castings benefit yourplant because of their high content of beneficial microbes and nutrients. If you search around, you can find natural fertilizers that are alsoeasy to apply such as compost tea. Many might associate natural fertilizerswith the pungent smell of a horse stall or chicken coop however awell matured compost pile smells like nothing but healthy dirt. Compostand worm castings also provide optimal soil structure. Here we aresurrounded by nothing but compact clay and rocks so soil structure isjust as if not more critical than fertilizing nutrients. Soil structure refersto the drainage and moisture retention characteristics of soil. So althoughthe synthetic fertilizers might be on sale at Home Depot, trustme, a good natural fertilizer is much more of a bang for your buck. Stayinformed, your plants will thank you.Meristem Tree CareMeristemTree@gmail.comYou can reach me at margaretdyekman@cox.net, and you can read all the archived Birdsof Munds Park articles and leave your comments at www.birdladyblog.wordpress.com.I welcome your questions, reports of sightings, and your ideas for future articles.

August 25, 2014Pinewood News 39DID YOU KNOW?....The first Labor Day was held in 1882. Its origins stem from the desireof the Central Labor Union to create a holiday for workers. It becamea federal holiday in 1894. It was originally intended that the daywould be filled with a street parade to allow the public to appreciatethe work of the trade and labor organizations. After the parade, afestival was to be held to amuse local workers and their families. Inlater years, prominent men and women held speeches. This is lesscommon now, but is sometimes seen in election years. One of thereasons for choosing to celebrate this on the first Monday in Septemberwas to add a holiday in the long gap between Independence Dayand Thanksgiving.A 501C3 tax exempt organizationAND donations are tax deductible.Members and non-members have been generous to the PFD Auxiliarythroughout the year and it is truly appreciated. August 25, 2014Pinewood News 41The Girl You Left Behindby Jojo MoyesA true story made headlines November 4, 2013. A trove of approximately1500 works of art confiscated by the Nazis in WWII wereseized in a Munich apartment. The value was estimated to be $1.3 billionby artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Chagall. The news wenton to say that determining the rightful owners of the works decadesafter they were either sold under duress or seized could take years.Where in the Worldis The Pinewood News? One might think this would be a great premise for a novel and TheGirl You Left Behind might just be that novel. Published earlier this year, it was obviouslywritten before this news broke. The work of art at the heart of this story is ofcourse fictional as are the events surrounding it. The painting entitled “The Girl YouLeft Behind”, was painted in the year 1915 by a French artist, Eduardo Leferve, and itresurfaces in the year 2001 in London. There are actually two girls left behind in this story. The first is Sophie Lefevre whoseartist husband Eduardo goes to war for France in 1916. The second is Liv a youngwidow in London whose husband dies prematurely in 2000. Their stories, some eightyyears apart, are connected through a painting of “the girl” who is actually Sophiepainted by her husband. The painting resurfaces in the story in Liv’s bedroom. It was agift from her husband on their honeymoon. The two girls are united by a passion forthis painting which represents both their husband’s love and devotion to them. The dual timeframe storyline almost a century apart flows effortlessly from one to theother, although Sophie’s historical storyline is, I believe, the stronger of the two. Sophie, struggling to keep the family’s hotel afloat under the German occupation ofFrance, hangs her portrait in the hotel where it is a daily reminder of the proud self-reliantgirl her husband saw. She wants this reminder as the German invasion causes herto feel that the “glowing girl willful in her confidence” is slipping away due to enemyoppression and poor nutrition. Although the opening scene would have readers doubt alack of confidence when she confronts the German Kommandant’s accusation that sheis harboring livestock. It is my favorite scene in the book. The risk she takes in hanging the portrait in a public place is that it is also visible to all. When the German Kommandant notices the painting, his comments reveal that he is acultured man. The portrait is the catalyst that causes Sophie to risk everything—reputation, family and her life—in hopes of seeing her Eduardo again. What follows is a wary connection made between the Kommandant and Sophie thatleads to tragic circumstancesNinety years later the portrait hangs in Liv’s bedroom, as a cherished memento of herhusband and their honeymoon. On the one-year anniversary of her husband’s death,Livy meets Paul and his friendship is the first stirring of feeling she’s had for anyonesince the death of her husband. Unfortunately, Paul works for a company specializingin the return of artworks looted during wartime. I think you can see where this isheaded. Instead of a blossoming relationship, they are now on opposing sides. The tensionmounts as the case of rightful ownership goes to court. Documents produced atthe trial take us back in time to Sophie’s ordeal and we discover, as Paul Harvey wouldsay, “the rest of the story”. Was the portrait stolen from the Lefevre family or was itgifted?July 29th at Sergeti National Park in Tanzania, AfricaPictured r-l -Michael Hull, Elizabeth Simchak, ElliotHull, Margery Simchak, Houston Hull (holding PWN),Frank Simchak and Melanie Hull.August 13th at The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in(my hometown!) Cleveland, OhioPictured l-r -Haley, Jim & Sharon EmeryTake a picture holding a copy of The Pinewood News whenyou are on your next road trip or vacation and email it to usat pinewoodnews@hotmail.comThanks to all who have submitted these great pic’s!Liv, like Sophie, takes a great risk as she defends her right to keep the portrait as shebecomes subject to unthinking public hostility. Although the painting disappeared duringWWI, she gets hate mail urging her to end the suffering of the Jewish people persecutedin WWII. Return what is rightly theirs. Both heroines are united in theirdetermination to fight for the thing they love most-- whatever the cost.As one review, which I totally agree with, says, “JoJo Moyes does a majestic job ofconjuring a cast of characters who are charismatic, credible and utterly compelling.”Moyes places her characters in extremely difficult situations where the stakes are highno matter what decision they make.JoJo Moyes, who lives in London, is a former journalist turned novelist. Her novel ForeignFruit won the Romantic Novelists’ Association Novel of the Year Award in 2004.In closing this summer of book reviews in Pinewood, I wish all book lovers time to curlup with many good books till we meet again next summer.Vy Armour writes a bi-monthly book review column for the Ahwatukee Newswhere she and her husband Don owned a bookstore (Pages) in the 90’s.They have been summer Pinewood residents since 1996.Vy can be contacted at vyarmour@gmail.com.
