The next general meeting of the Crosby PTSA will be held on Thursday, April 23 rd , at 6:45 p.m. Election of Officers for the 2009-10 year will take place on Thursday, May 21 st during the annual Crosby Arts Night. The meeting will be on Thursday, April 9th at 3:00 p.m. in the school library. Box Tops—You Rock!! Once again Crosby families came through! The PTSA submitted another 543.20 worth of Box Tops in February. That brings our total for the year to $1,429.20 Thanks to everyone for their participation! The homerooms who enjoyed an ice cream party were… Ms. Turnbull, Ms. Helm, and Mr. Quinn. Keep clipping and saving. Box Tops do have an expiration date and many are June 1 st . Please make sure to send those in before the end of the school year so we don’t lose out easy money. If you have a few extra seconds please trim around each Box Top. Adventurer Team The Invention Convention is coming soon! Adventurers have identified problems and needs, developed innovative solutions, researched their invention ideas and built working models. Please visit us in the gym on March 26th between 9:45 and 2:00 when we will be exhibiting our work. We're proud to announce that the Adventurer Students of the Month for March are Thomas Rosbottom, Mary Jenkins, Hayley Washington, Jaylin Lee and Lilly Edwards. They are trustworthy, attentive, helpful to others and take responsibility for their actions. Way to go! While the wind and ice storms changed the last day of school, our trip schedule remains the same. The New York trip will leave after school on May 29 and return before school starts on the morning of June 2. These students will be excused from one day of school, but return for final exams. The Kings Island trip will be on Friday, May 15 from 8AM to 8PM. We will have just finished the CATS tests, so if a student has any incomplete parts he/she will have to stay at school and finish the test. Students can go for $35 and parent chaperones for $45. Reservations will be taken until Spring Break and will be confirmed in full-bus amounts. Explorer Team In social studies we have been learning about the Middle Ages. Your child should be able to tell you about feudalism, manors, knights and more. I have used a variety of materials to cover the content to better prepare them for the test. However, nothing can replace studying. Our next unit of study will be the Renaissance. On April 30th we are going to Financial Park for a field trip. Students will start a workbook provided by Junior Achievement to prepare them for the real-world activities that they will be doing at the site. They will learn how to write checks, keep a check register, and about making budgets. I will need one chaperone for every ten students to meet Junior Achievement's guidelines. I will send home a letter with more information in a few weeks. Junior Achievement pays for our busses and we will take our lunch so there is no cost for this field trip. Science students have a super homework packet that includes three assignments due Mar. 27, Apr. 10 and Apr. 17. Make sure you ask your child about it. In Language Arts, we are working on our reflective pieces to finish up our portfolios. Have a safe Spring break! Mariner Team These are just a few questions that your child should have answered for you at the student led conferences in February. If you didn't get to talk to your child during or after the conferences please ask them these questions now. They should be able to answer for you, these have been true since August! Where do each of the teachers put their agendas? What is the name of Mrs. Gleeson's fish? Who loves gourds? Who is a member of the winning team of teachers (the bandana thing)? How many pairs of shoes do you think Mrs. Gleeson owns? What two pieces of writing did you choose for your portfolio? Is your language arts binder organized? Do you have enough paper? Is your grammar workbook pink or red? What has been the hardest grammar unit for you this year? What teacher has homework due at the end of a week instead of every night? Where is the math makeup work located? Where do you find papers in math with no name on them? Where is Mrs. Beagle's work listed for the six weeks? Which teacher is obsessed (not like that is a bad thing) with coffee? Who is a die-hard Louisville Cardinal fan? In which class should you always start the warm-up as soon as you enter? In which class should you always show your work? In which class do you always have to head your paper a certain way? In which class should you always complete class work as homework if you don't finish? What is the purpose of Mrs. Gleeson's sea salt? We hope that you enjoyed the student led conferences. Please let us know how these conferences helped you. The Mariner Team Teachers. Pathfinder Team Pathfinder Language Arts: Pathfinder students got some very important mail this week...from President Barack Obama. He was thanking the students for their letters welcoming him and his family to the White House. The president asked for their help "to renew our Nation's promise to carry forth the great gift of freedom to future generations". Now that's writing for a purpose! Pathfinders Social Studies: Over the next six-weeks, Pathfinders will work on the Junior Achievement Finance Park program that lets participants experience what it takes to create and manage a personal budget. Students are introduced to the banking, clothing, education, entertainment, food, healthcare, home improvement, housing, investing and transportation industries. Most important of all, the hands-on nature of JA Finance Park helps students develop a realistic understanding of the economic issues they will face later in life. Pathfinder Science: We are well into our Force and Motion unit. Homework policy for the remainder of the year has changed. Students received all of the homework assignment options for the 5th grading period on 3/9/09. They are to select 1 assignment from each category. Each category has an assigned due date. The same will be repeated for the 6th grading period. If you have not already signed off on the packet, please ask your child. We are using these in science for Formative (just to "see" where students are) and Summative (graded) Assessments. They are very cool devices that allow teacher and student to get immediate feedback.
