He gave it tome so I could put it in my yard for my kids. I have the luxury of having a ball diamond literally in my backyard. So, instead of puttingthe pitching rubber in my yard, I have it in my keepsake box. It is my constant reminder, my “state championship” sign, mymotivator to help my kids unlock their inner power, to empower them with a can-do attitude and to assist my kids in their attempts to“dream big.” I never won a state championship or went pro in any sport. But as I evolved, so did my dreams. I understand that asmy kids grow, so too may their dreams as well as what motivates them. I believe it is my responsibility as their parent to be the“wizard behind the screen,” to provide as much as I can, spiritually, mentally, physically and financially. I will do what I can; ofcourse, there will be limits, and, of course, I will at times fail. Thankfully, I have that pitching rubber to motivate me when I start tolose focus.Do you know what motivates your daughter? What it is that your daughter is “dreaming big” about? Good luck as youembark on that journey of dreaming big. T H E P O W E R W I T H I N UField HockeyVarsity “Hold the ROPE!!” is what you will hear theUrsuline field hockey team chanting these days as they walkoff the field. The 2010 Bears are holding the rope with an 8-8-1 record as of mid-October.The BEARS have had some heartbreaking losses:losing to CJA 2-0 at home early in the season and to Villa in ahard fought overtime 2-1 loss. This team has realized that ittakes everyone holding the rope to make a team successful. The girls headed to Chicago for the Huskie Invitationaland played some great field hockey. The Bears recordeda win Friday against Oak Park, 2-0, with goals scored by AlexCampisi and Rachel Fuchs. The team played Assumption fromLouisville and tied 1-1 in the Friday night game. ShirleyBoland scored, and the defense played an exceptional game, led by Gina Brahm, Anna Maggiorotto, Ally Hill and goalkeeperSam Schott. The girls were up early on Saturday to faceArrowhead and defeated them, 2-0, with goals by Rachel Fuchsand Ally Hill. We played one more game, losing to a new rival,Ballard 2-1. Maddie Friedmann erased the Ballard shutout with a goal in the last minute of the game. The team leftChicago with a 2-1-1 record for the weekend.Kirkwood was our first opponent after the long weekendon turf. We won that game, 1-0, with a goal by HaleyHolt, and faced Rosati on Friday, September 24. The Bearslost to Rosati Kane, 1-0, in regulation. Rosati came to play.We had our opportunities but were unable to find the net on thefive penalty corners at the end of the game. The following week looked to be a tough one for theBears with Lafayette, Whitfield and John Burroughs on theschedule. A new team came to play in the game against Lafayette. The team decided to play to win every game and to havefun on and off the field as a family (a team). You could see animmediate difference as we warmed up for the Lafayette game. The positive energy and compliments were very apparent. TheBears were there to avenge the 2-1 loss at the beginning of theseason. Lafayette came out strong, but the Bears werestronger. Lafayette took an early lead, 1-0, at the end of thefirst half. The half-time talk was all about “holding the rope.”The Bears grabbed hold and never looked back. Ursulinescored at 16:53 to tie the game with a beautiful goal by HaleyHolt, and Lafayette countered just two minute later. RachelFuchs and the offense answered Lafayette with two goals andtook the lead with 5:50 to go. The Bears were superb in thisgame. They played an excellent game and walked off the fieldwith a new sense of confidence. The Bears played Whitfield at UA and won, 2-1.Whitfield scored first, but this team knew they had to “hold therope,” and they picked each other up. Emily Stephens scoredthe tying goal, and Maggie Cromien netted the game winnerwith 17 minutes left to play.Ursuline was pumped up to play John Burroughs.Ursuline came out and quickly scored the first goal of thegame. John Burroughs countered with two goals before halfand another in the second half. The team was determined toplay 60 minutes of good solid hockey, and that is what theydid. Taylor Tusinski scored with two minutes left. The finalscore was 3-2, Burroughs. The score may say we lost the game, but in fact it was a win for the team; they never gave up!!! Thegirls played an incredible game: passing, cutting, finishing andworking together. It was a picture-perfect game. The Bearsjust came up a goal short. The week ended with an intense game against Edwardsville. The Bears had many opportunities to score butwere unable to net a goal in regulation, taking the game toovertime. Up and down the field, the 7 v 7 overtime game continueduntil Ursuline was awarded a penalty corner. EmilyStephens scored the game winner off a ball inserted from RachelFuchs. It was a beautiful goal and a perfect way to end abeautiful day.The last four games of hockey are the kind of hockeythis team is capable of playing. They look like a team and actlike a winning team. They are coming together at just the righttime of the season. With five games to go and the tournamentjust around the corner, this team has their goal in sight. Theyare “Holding the Rope,” and anything is possible when youplay together.GO, BEARS!!!Coach Roxann NaegerJunior Varsity It's hard to believe the JV field hockey team is almost finished with the 2010 season, but we are soproud of this season's accomplishments! The girls have been working so hard to refine their skills and come together as a team, onand off the field. We've had success recently in tournament play, winning our pool in an October 2nd, JV tournament and beatingthe first seed, Nerinx Hall, in the October 9th playoff tournament. In regular season play, the girls recently shut out one of theleagues' top teams, John Burroughs, with a 5-0 win.Off the field, the girls have been planning activities to bond with their JV teammates, and have taken C-team "little sisters"to provide support and encouragement on game days.A big thanks to the JV team parents; our cheering section is one of the best, and the snacks, uniform laundering, carpoolinghave been invaluable! The final game of the season is October 20 at Nerinx Hall; please come out, and support your fellow sisters! Best of luckto varsity in the playoffs!Coach Jocelyn DiehlP A G E 4

GolfURSULINE BEARS, DISTRICT CHAMPS FOR THE 4 TH STRAIGHT YEAR!The Ursuline golf team has completed their regular season play sinceDistrict Champsour last newsletter. The varsity squad finished with a 9–1 match record withour only loss coming at the hands of St. Joe’s on their home course, our lastmatch of the season, and the night we honored our four seniors, team managerColleen Kinsella, Hannah Schmitz, Lauren Essmyer and Andrea Frankiewicz. We should be co-conference champs with St. Joe and Villa who alsofinished 9–1. In our tournament play, after starting out winning at RockwoodSummit, the girls continued their strong play in placing 2 nd in the Angel Classic,3 rd overall (2 nd for MO) in the MO/ILL challenge, and 2 nd in the Jeff CityTournament. In our district tournament held at Aberdeen on September 29, wefinished first ahead of Nerinx by 22 shots, with Andrea Frankiewicz the tournamentmedalist, carding a 79. Abbey Manley took 2 nd overall with an 80, andHannah Schmitz was close behind in 4 th place overall with an 85, and the 4 thscore we counted was Lauren Essmyer with an 88. An additional tournamentwas added to girls’ golf this year with a sectional tournament where the twotop teams from districts, along with the top 15 scores outside of the two qualifying teams, played for the right to move on to the statetournament. At sectionals we were paired with the two top teams from District 1, and in that tournament we also took 1 st place, scoringten shots better than runner up, Nerinx Hall. Only 12 additional players advanced to state from that event, with the high score of91 moving on. Andrea was our low scorer and 3 rd overall with a 78 at Crown Pointe in Farmington last Wednesday. These five playerswill continue to work very hard to be as prepared as possible to represent Ursuline Academy at the State Tournament, October 18-19. I am hopeful that their golf and great sportsmanship will be even a bigger hit than their fancy red golf shoes!!Even though these five girls will be representing the school, we have had a strong varsity squad with all eight girls contributingin the matches and some of the tournaments as well. As a matter of fact, we really had a team effort this year with our seniorsAndrea, Hannah, Lauren all having a turn as medalist, and Jessica Ferguson also took low honors with Hannah in our match withNotre Dame and was low scorer in the match with Lutheran South. Please be sure tosend these girls off with your well wishes for a strong showing at State.FreshmanField Hockey The team hascome so far since the beginning of the season. The girls have worked very hard, and itdefinitely shows. Our record so far this seasonis three losses, five ties and one win!Our win was against Eureka High School;the score was 2-0, and it was a great game!In our freshman field hockey tournament atSt. Joe on September 18 we received secondin our pool. We know these girls will be working hard this spring and summer toimprove their game so that we can continue the tradition of Winning (you will have toask a golfer what the word W.I.N. means to them). We want to thank all of the UrsulineAdministration for supporting these young ladies as they strive to excel, not onlyon the golf course, but in the classroom as well.Go “Low,” Bears!!Happy Golfing from your Ursuline Golf Coaches,Bridget Gilbert & Audrey HitchP A G E 5P A W P R I D E

TIPS FOR PARENTS & FANSA CHILD-CENTERED APPROACHKnow Your RoleThere are only four roles in every game. You can play. You can coach. You can officiate. Or you can be a fan. But you can onlyplay one role at a time.Be positive, and encourage all the players. You’re not the coach, so don’t shout out instructions. You’re not the official; so don’toffer opinions on a particular call. Help your child keep it all in perspective by keeping it in perspective for you, too.Drop Yours and Adopt TheirsAsk yourself why you want your children to play and what you hope to gain. Then ask your player: “Why are you playing?” and“What are your goals?” Really listen to the answer. If you discover you have different goals for your children—drop yours andadopt theirs. Otherwise, your child is in danger of dropping out, never realizing her potential and dramatically affecting herhealth and quality of life.Fill the Emotional TankPeople who are praised are motivated to continue that behavior. Use positive, specific comments (“I like the way you’re hustlingup and down the court!”) Praise a behavior you’d like them to continue. Find something genuine to praise—people can seethrough false praise, so be truthful.MORE TIPS FOR PARENTS & FANSSet a Great ExampleModel the behavior you’d like to see. If you don’t like a call against your team, be quiet (sure, it’s hard, but of course you can).Avoid negative comments about the coach, especially in front of your child.Give Space After GamesGuess what most kids like least (by far) about their participation in youth sports? The ride home. Immediately after the game isabsolutely the worst time to rehash. Sports are intense, and kids need time to relax. Take the cue from your child. When they’reready, they’ll let you know. Then, ask open-ended questions (“What did you enjoy?” and “What did you learn?”) Don’t give youranalysis unless your child asks for it.Tell A Player What A Player Really Wants To Hear“I love watching you play.”Tips and strategies provided by NAIA Champions of Character special presenter Bruce Brown. The mission of Champions of Character is to restore character values and raise a generation of students who understand anddemonstrate in everyday decisions respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
