Type 13X zeolitewill absorb molecules with criticaldiameters up to 10 angstrom. The sievecharge can be reactivated by baking outin place when a base vacuum cannot beachieved. A valve should be used toisolate the evolved gas from the systemduring the bakeout cycle. During bakeouta mechanical pump removes the evolvedgases from the sieve trapping material. Tominimize downtime, bakeouts can beconducted with the aid of a timer, duringsystem offhours. Oils trapped by thesieve material will not be evolved bybaking. Periodic replacement of the sievematerial is required whenever the sievematerial exhibits evidence ofhydrocarbon saturation as determined byempirical observation. The sieve trappingmaterial is easily replaced through a portfitted to the top of the trap.Molecular sieve <strong>traps</strong> can be mounted ina vertical or horizontal position. Onceturned on, the heater reaches andmaintains a self-regulated and constant150°C temperature. Bakeout timedepends on the amount of water vapourloading of the zeolite and can range fromfour to twelve hours.Coaxial <strong>traps</strong>Coaxial foreline <strong>traps</strong> offer easymaintenance and room-temperatureoperation, they require no bakeout orcooling and are virtually maintenancefree. They are ideally suited for trappingroughing pump hydrocarbons frombackstreaming into a vacuum system.Single-piece coaxial foreline <strong>traps</strong> containabsorbent filter cartridges with a bronzewool element. This filter element ispermanently sealed inside the trap’s bodyand can’t be removed or replaced. These<strong>traps</strong> are serviced by replacing them witha spare unit while cleaning thecontaminated trap. Single-piece <strong>traps</strong> areavailable in 100mm and 150mm bodydiameters.In contrast to the single-piece units, thetwo-piece coaxial foreline <strong>traps</strong> offer awider selection of filter elementmaterials. Filter elements for a two-piecetrap are removable, stainless steel screencartridges filled with copper, stainlesssteel or bronze wools, activated alumina,activated carbon or dual-elementabsorbent materials.During operation, pump oil coalesces onthe element and returns to the pump.Activated alumina effectively adsorbsacids and water vapour while activatedcarbon adsorbs organics and watervapour. Filter cartridges are quickly andeasily replaced by removing thebanded clamp that fastens the twopiecebody.MDC Vacuum Limited recommendskeeping a spare element onhand for aquick change to minimize down time.Reusable elements may be cleaned andready for the next exchange.Note that filter elements are notincluded with trap assemblies andmust be ordered separately.Two-piece <strong>traps</strong> are offered with 50, 100,150 and 200mm body diameters. Allcoaxial trap bodies are made of type 304stainless steel and are offered with achoice of hose or flange style connections.CF metal seal flange connections have onefixed and one rotatable flange foralignment purposes. ISO KF and ISO LFflanges are clamp-style. Hose connectionsmay also be welded, but permanentinstallation must be carefully evaluated.Liquid nitrogen <strong>traps</strong>Liquid nitrogen <strong>traps</strong> removecondensables before they enter the pumpor backstream from the pump to thevacuum system. Water trapping by theliquid nitrogen cooled surface is completeand permanent.Liquid nitrogen <strong>traps</strong> can be fitted with acustomer-supplied coolant level controllerto automatically replenish consumed liquidnitrogen.In general, trap performance will vary withthe specific application, usage, number ofprocess cycles and relative humidity in theregion.
