Simply shop
with SCRIP &
support SWS
Do you buy groceries, gas,
clothing, coffee or eat out at
restaurants? If so, you can
support SWS by using SCRIP
for your purchases ~ it’s easy!
Here’s how SCRIP works:
SWS buys SCRIP gift cards
through a distributor and
participating retailers offer
substantial discounts ranging
from 2% to 20%. These
discounts are then passed on to
SWS. SWS resells the SCRIP
gift cards to you for full face
value so your everyday
purchases raise money for
SWS with ease.
Order SCRIP for things like gas,
groceries, clothing, the movies,
dinner at your favorite
restaurant, department stores ~
even hotel accommodations.
SCRIP cards make great gifts
too so keep SWS in mind as
you shop for the holidays. It
doesn’t cost you any extra and
the money raised goes straight
to SWS.
You can purchase SCRIP one
of two ways. 1) Monday
through Fridays at the School’s
front office from 7:00 am to 3:00
pm during regular school hours
or 2) online by going to the
School’s website and following
the prompts under “Ways to
Give.”
www.saintwenceslaus.org/
school_index.html
Local New Prague retailers participate
in SCRIP too. See merchant listing
online on the order form.
Oktoberfest Event
***********
We apologize for cancelling
the Oktoberfest event due to
the low presale of tickets. We
felt it was too financially risky
to go ahead with the event.
Please come on out and
support the 2010-2011 SWS
fundraisers found the back
page of this newsletter.
How much was tuition
when you attended SWS?
Have you ever wondered what the cost of tuition
was back when you were at SWS? As best as
our records indicate, “book rent” was first
introduced at SWS in 1966. The “rent” for two
children at that time was $68. “Rent” changed to
“Fees” in the ‘70’s and in the early ‘80’s the term
“Tuition” began to emerge.
Recently we found a Sunday parish bulletin from
August 14, 1983 with an announcement to all
SWS families that read:
“We encourage those who are able to pay
the full amount of tuition at this time to do
so. Those who are not able should talk to Fr.
Paron or Sr. Jean and make out a plan that is
workable. We have tried to keep tuition at a
minimum of $275 for the 1 st child, $240 for
the second, and $200 for the third.
We encourage those who have difficulty
paying to set aside $7.64 a week for one child
in school; $14.31 if you have two children
attending or $19.87 if you have three or
more.”
Fast-forward to 2010. This school year tuition at
SWS is $3,330 per student. Again the struggle
has been to keep tuition to a minimum. Approximately
20% of current enrollment or 50 students
have qualified for financial assistance as determined
by TADS (Tuition Aid Data Services)
using a nationally recognized formula. A goal of
SWS is to meet the challenge of providing these
families with the most need, assistance to pay
for tuition.
Because of your personal connection to SWS,
consider a Pay-it-Forward Gift based on the gift
you were given of a Catholic School Education.
Take some time to realize the tremendous
influence SWS has had throughout your life and
give today in the envelope enclosed.
A Letter from Jake Kartak
Jake is the son of Pete and
Anne (Maxa) Kartak; all
alumni of SWS. (Pete is also
an employee at St. Wenceslaus.)
Jake, a graduate of
SWS a few years ago, was
diagnosed with colon cancer
last year and the SWS
community has been praying
for him ever since.
To All SWS Families,
Students & Staff ~
Over the past 10 months
cancer has changed my life
considerably, but one thing
that has remained unchanged
has been the support from
people like yourselves. Your
thoughts, prayers and various
gifts have made this
experience bearable and
beatable. My life has become
a real-life example of the
power of prayer and that God
is ALWAYS listening.
St. Wenceslaus School has
instilled great principles in
myself and I hope you too will
carry these principles with you
long after you leave. I will
forever take pride in my time
at St. Wenceslaus School.
I am currently back at the
University of Minnesota (GO
GOPHERS!) to finish out my
senior year. I am studying
Environmental Sciences and
couldn’t be happier to be back
on campus.
I am forever in debt to you all,
and God bless each and
every one of you!
teacher, Ann Kreger.
Hey Alumni,
How many of you remember the “olden days” of the annual SWS
Marathon? How many actually biked the 16 miles out past the
Schoenbauer farm and back? Remember the up-hill both ways by the
St. Wenceslaus Cemetery? The structure of the Marathon may be
different these days, (the School focuses on service projects during the
week-of Marathon and families walk the perimeter around the School
ground while participating in fun family activities,) but the end result is
still the same. Money is raised to enhance the education for all
students at SWS. Over $45,000 this year!
