From the desk of Fr. Dave Barrett Important Information
We Are All About Education
Last week we had a pizza party to celebrate the end of this year’s
Religious education program. They went through 20 pizzas like a knife
through warm butter. The party was a great celebration of a good year
of learning. There are around 140 young people in the program and they
were a spirited bunch. I was able to visit classrooms fairly often and this
was often one of the highlights of my week.
Carol Weiers was the coordinator this year and she helped the whole
program run smoothly. I am very grateful to the over 20 people who
taught and/or assisted with the education of our young people. They
were very dedicated to the goal of bringing Jesus into the young lives
they were responsible for and I thank them for their efforts. They
volunteer to help the students in guiding them in their faith. I believe the
experience was positive, as nearly all of them will return next year.
One feature of the program is each student must learn prayers
associated with their grade level. The teachers have the prayer recited
each week and they have methods to ensure the child is learning them. I
think these prayers are good building blocks for their faith. Back when I
was learning, we didn’t have to memorize prayers and it was tough
getting them down when I was older. The teachers have a text to follow
and many use projects and activities to reinforce principles. Each student
second grade and above had the opportunity to go to the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. Mass was offered several times and Lenten stations were
a part of the experience.
Teaching our children is important. The teachers cannot do it alone. We
need parents and grandparents to step in so learning can take place year
round. The Rite of Baptism states that the parents will be the first
teachers of their children in the faith and may they also be the best of
teachers as well. Join me in thanking our teachers and praying for the
continued success of our program.
Becoming a welcoming
community
Making our New Prague Area Catholic
Community a welcoming place is
everyone’s job! You can help by
introducing yourself to someone you
don’t know at Mass or just by sitting in
a different place in church so you see some new
faces! We have a great opportunity with the Western
Catholic Community pictorial directory and St.
Wenceslaus directory update, coming up this summer.
Watch the bulletin for more details.
that is equally important. Contact Mary Higgins to be put
A FISH Story…
A school social worker referred a single parent family
to FISH. Mom was managing to keep up with house
payments and basic expenses. There was no help
from dad. However, within a week’s time, the clothes
washer and microwave died and a storm damaged the
gutters on the house. They also needed help with
food and gas. The unique thing about this situation is
that help came from many different sources; gas and
food cards, offers to fix the gutters! If you are
interested in learning more about FISH, visit the
website at www.fishgroup.net, or call Mary Higgins at
758-0464 to be added to the FISH email list. Maybe
YOU have something to give to someone in need.
Bulletin Board Display
Please take a minute to look at the bulletin board
display in the back of church, honoring local military
currently serving and/or deployed. This is a way for
our parishioners to keep these individuals and their
families in your thoughts and prayers. If you are
interested in including your love one, contact Helen
Hartman, 758-3842 or Mary Pieper 952-873-6781.
Loaves and Fishes
St. Wenceslaus served about 145 people on May 3 rd at
its third Loaves and Fishes meal at the Shakopee site.
Fr. Dave had this to say about his experience there:
“The need at Loaves and Fishes didn’t seem to have
any boundaries. There was such a cross section of
people. There were elderly men and women who wore
experience on their faces and gratitude in their
hearts. The twenty year olds looked eager for a meal.
There were also children crying in the arms of their
mothers. Some were regulars there and they gently
instructed me on what they wanted, and some
seemed new, perhaps their first time there. There
was such a mix of God’s children that it could have
been any of us there for a meal. The meal made me
count my blessings and know that God cares.” The
next meal will be served on Thur., July 5 th . Contact
